Mortal Engines (2018)
One of the worst films I have seen in a long time
I am not sure what I was expecting watching this movie but I love big spectacle action movies. The trailers showed a lot of potential and I did go into this film with some high hopes.
This was one of the worst films I have seen in a long time. There was not much character development so you don not actually care much about the characters, the plot was so predictable, the ending was a joke, a lot of elements just wasn't explained very well.
The whole premise of the film is interesting and visually I did enjoy it but for me the plot and characters did not meet the same standards. Would not recommend this film.
The Gift (2015)
Shocking reality, always think before you act
After finally getting the chance to watch this film, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is not just shocking when watching it with how the story unfolds. It is shocking how relevant to reality it can be with the great message of thinking back to people you have wronged and what to do in the future. I really enjoyed this film and its message.
A film that makes you think more about your own life and bridges that gap in this psychological way are great films. Of course it has to be done right which I believe Joel Edgerton in directing writing and staring in did very well. Would look forward to his next film(s) after this.
The cast performed very well with great acting from Jason Bateman moving away from comedy, Joel Edgerton who you both felt sorry for and hated at different intervals of the movie.
Nothing too special with cinematography but nothing looked out of place and the setting made the film feel that much bit like reality. However I did feel at certain points the back story of Joel Edgerton's character could of been looked at in a bit more detail as his past was the key point to the movie. So this could have been flushed out a bit more to make the ending that much more impacting.
But other than this I very much enjoyed the movie and would recommend anyone to watch it if you are bored of the same formulaic movie and want a more psychological mystery that makes you think more in- depth.
8/10
The Martian (2015)
Matt Damon, alone, on Mars, better than you might expect
After going to see The Martian I was pleasantly surprised at hoe good a film focused on Matt Damon being alone on Mars could actually be. But to get one thing clear from start to finish you do know what the outcome of the film will be but the ride is really really good.
To start off the acting is really good from Matt Damon, he kept it funny, interesting and some good dramatic acting as well. The supporting cast was also very good with no real performance that was disappointing. This has some things down to the writing I have heard from other reviews as the script was really good and light for a movie surrounded by a character being left on a planet on his own. So Drew Goddard does deserve credit for his writing after the very popular book.
Cinematography and visuals of the film are brilliant, not once did I feel like Mars is pretty boring when watching the film. The film being set in a lonely planet it is still really cool to see vast mountains. This all adds to the desertion and the scale of the planet. The film deserves some credit for the visuals which are up there with the visuals in Gravity or interstellar which is similar in its space setting. Perhaps not as good throughout the film but still fantastic cinematic experience.
After already stating that anyone going to see this film you will already predict the outcome but when engaged with the film you don't really feel disappointed you feel like you was with Matt Damon on another planet. you are immersed in the film it is brilliant to watch. This would be a criticism of the film but when watching you don't dwell on this. however a real criticism would be the film is quite long at two hours twenty minutes and some scenes back on earth could be cut down a bit as we came to see Matt Damon on Mars and we want to see Matt Damon on Mars.
I would definitely recommend this film in the cinema was one of the best films of the year so far and if your a fan of space this is the film for you.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)
One of the my personal favourite films of the year!
When first watching the trailer for this film half a year ago I had high hopes and was one of the most anticipated films that I wanted to go see along with many others.
Keeping a sad story so light and humerus is very challenging but this film I thought blended it so well together with excellent performances with the main characters of Thomas Mann as Greg, RJ Cyler as Earl and Olivia Cooke as Rachel. There was great chemistry between the cast and loved the relationship they develop over time. The plot of making friends with a dying girl would not be very upbeat and uplifting but the way it was carried out was very well done.
The cinematography of the film was amazing to watch every shot and transition was perfect an really appreciated the way it was filmed. This was something I would look to use in my future with filming.
I did like the narration on the film but however I think it did give away some plot points or made you think about the ending way too soon even though some of it was to mislead you. I would of preferred it to be more just kept to how the film plays out.
There are many young adult films out there with similar stories like fault in our stars for instance but this film is up there with the top of them for sure. This film should get recognition through awards but the film is great and more people should go see it!
The Visit (2015)
That Twist!
I have heard a lot about the twist of the film and was very well done and was unexpected. With M night shyamalan getting a lot of stick about his other films rightly so it was good to see a film from him that was really entertaining.
With he plot of the two children going to see there grandparents then weird things starting to happen it is not that creative but the execution of it was well done. I am not a fan of found footage but I can appreciate how it was carried out like this. I thought the performances of the main characters in the children were okay I did not care for the boy rapping didn't make any sense to have that in the film. The two grandparents performances were very good, could be difficult to act very strange the whole film.
When you have watched a lot of jump scare horror films that are not very entertaining and then watch The Visit you will be happy you did as it has the occasional one but is more down to building up suspense of the relationship between the opposite sets of characters.
Would recommend this film to anyone as I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved the dynamic of the film. I could say that one of the best horror's of the year with exception of It Follows as I enjoyed that a little bit more.
The Gallows (2015)
Awful film to a point of anger do not watch
I have never been so angry leaving a cinema, I really disliked this film I have seen the same plot a million times and found footage has had its day in my opinion. The actors were terrible, there was so many plot holes after the ending. I was spending most of the time in the film saying to myself what will happen next and 90% of the time I got it right, such a clichéd film. Some of the acting was laughable to a point where I burst out laughing in the cinema. I was also surprised that the cinema was fairly packed I thought I as the only idiot to go see this film.
I see films like this making over $18 million on a $100 thousand pound budget and then more and more of the same film comes out. I understand me watching it is feeding these films being made but nothing unique is coming out in the horror genre.
Spend your time and money on other films, like 'It Follows' which came out this year a way better psychological horror or even Insidious 3 where they have much better intense moments. I would give it a 3/10 only because I admire that they tricked so many people to think it would be a good film by the trailer.
Ex Machina (2014)
Very very good would recommend!
Finally got to see Ex Machina after it was released so long ago, it was such as strange but wonderfully made film. The characters all had depth and was interested in their stories. Loved the twist and turns the film made as well. Throughout the film I was wondering who I was rooting for as you wont clearly know who the good and bad are in this film.
The story is pretty simple but it execution is brilliant. the visual affects of Ava was also very well done as it looks like she really is an A.I which is credit to the production team.
Would really recommend this film to anyone very very entertaining film and will pick up on DVD when it comes out for sure.
The Flash: Grodd Lives (2015)
Less Iris focused
I do really enjoy the flash and this episode was very entertaining with the introduction of Grodd which was really really good. however it came to my attention many episodes of the Flash that they focus a lot of attention on Iris and I have become to really hate her character. I do not care about their love triangle, if they toned it down a bit during some episodes earlier on this might not of been an issue for me. I know end up not paying attention to some silly speech that Isis has when she believes everything is about her.
But apart from this flaw this was a very very good episode and look forward to the end of the season as the finale looks to be set up very well.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
A must see at the cinema!
I am a very big fan of Marvel and their films, they can hardly do wrong sometimes. I was skeptical at first thinking perhaps Age of Ultron would be a downfall in the franchise but I was very much mistaken. I really enjoyed this film from start to finish. I thought that at some point Marvel have to make a bad movie, this may come with Ant-Man later this year but not with this movie.
The story great with a balance between what is best for humanity and the world which Is a lot different than trying to conquer New York from the last movie. With an actual good Marvel Villain arguably since Loki, Ultron voiced by James Spader was excellent. The two new additions in the Maximoff brother and sister was really good to see that Marvel can add new characters that slot straight in. In fact loved all the new characters ones which I will not mention for spoilers.
For anyone wanting a new great marvel movie this is it, anyone want a great movie in general this is it. Watching it on the big screen is a must. Loved the movie.
Fast & Furious 7 (2015)
Mindless action with great tribute.
To watch this film you must have a mind that does not nitpick and that can look over the impossible stunts that are performed in this film. It is amazing some of the visuals but it is just so ridiculous it takes away from the film. It gives it that impossible feel that I don't think suites this film. I am all for seeing a bus go off a cliff in an action sequence but with the stupidity that one of the characters escapes to then jump on a spoiler is something I cannot accept.
I did enjoy the characters to some extent and I could take on board the story of Jason Statham's character view on them attacking his family. However I would of much preferred seeing them go head to head rather than him just jumping into the plot for the story convenience. It seemed a bit forced. But I had come to expect this from the Fast and Furious franchise.
This is a perfect film to put on when there is nothing else to watch or when it is on television for a bit of mindless action. But I do not thing it is a great thing for action films of the future to take a leap from this film as I assume the one billion it will make worldwide will influence more films to come. I would like to see some plausibility to the action and think "wow that could of happened". Not "wow this is stupid" when i see a car go through three skyscrapers and they some how survive.
After all of this the tribute to Paul Walker was a very touching moment and it is one I will re-watch as I did like the chemistry with all the characters. Paul Walker was probably the best of the bunch which will be a miss to this franchise.
Overall I would actually recommend watching this film however know what you are getting yourself into. you will not be seeing an action film that will bend your mind but you will see one that will make you think how stupid some of the scenes are.
6/10
The Wedding Ringer (2015)
Much better movies out there to spend your time.
After watching the wedding ringer I was mildly entertained with some of the humour on show. Not the biggest fan of this film maybe laughed out loud once and for a comedy I expected a bit more, most of the humour was awkward and I understand what they was going for but it wasn't great. I did not buy the story and especially did not buy the fact Kayley Cuoco would marry Josh Gad there was not connection and nothing to go on other than the fact the movie needs there to be this plot.
I am a fan of Kevin Hart and he was perfectly adequate in this role, which he seems to play in every film he is in. I find him hilarious in stand up comedy roles on television and when he is interviewed but lately found him to be a lot less entertaining in films he is in.
Apart from the one thing unique about this movie in hiring best-men it was nothing special and nothing we hadn't seen before. It was overall a pretty standard film probably worth watching when it comes on television I do think I would recommend this to anyone went it comes out on DVD. If you like Kevin Hart you only need to buy one film of his and he produces the same character. I cant say I will remember this film by tomorrow I don't really write that many reviews but this film had some promise but I really did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped.
5/10
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Worth a watch!
Went into the cinema with sort of high hopes after watching trailer after trailer on television. I really hoped it would live up to the hype surrounding it. I really like the direct who also directed Kickass in Matthew Vaughn. I did come out of the theatre entertained so in some capacity the film achieved its goal but however there was unnecessary humour through the exploitation of teenage stereotypes which I did not find funny at all. This humour was just not for me, there was other people in the cinema which found stealing cars, saying "Bruv" hilarious so it did hit some level of the audience. The humour did take a good turn towards the end of the film which had good moments. The plot line and twists where actually really good some that audience would next expect. I really enjoyed the plot as It had a good story. The characters were semi-likable but not always that great in my opinion. Colin Furth was very good in the movie and so was the lead Taron Egerton but the Villain in Samuel Jackson just became really annoying by the end. But overall it was good cast and solid performances.
I would really recommend this film to friends or family as it was entertaining, okay humour, good actions scenes, and good performances. However some of the humour may only be targeting certain people which could be a issue when the film releases to wider countries very soon. It was also one of the very few times that I have been to the cinema recently that it was near full so Kingsman is obviously doing something right.
I would give the film a 7/10.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
End of a film era.
the original lord of the rings trilogy are my favourite films of all time. I loved all three and when the Hobbits first came out my expectations were a lot higher so perhaps I did not enjoy the last three instalments as much but they are still brilliant and well made films. There is no one else on the planet that could have made these six films I all as good as Peter Jackson has made them. If people did not like this film or the other hobbits then that is fine but lets be thank full that they have been made and to as good of standard of film cinematography as possible. The battle scenes in all of the films and particularly this one are second to none they are amazingly created. It must be very difficult to actually produce the high action quality that is shown and I could watch it all day. Sometimes it does become a bit too much but this isn't something I would say is such a bad thing. I love the action in this film. The acting is very good, couldn't name someone who could play Bilbo as well as Martin Freeman has done and the same goes for Gandalf with Ian McKellen there are a lot of good acting with this film. I also really liked the ending where it ends where the lord of the rings takes off.
However there was some flaws within the story and felt that with some parts left unexplained. The unexplained parts could be within the books which then is something I would have to explore and probably will do. I think with the huge battle scenes some things get left to just be accepted. What I would say is that I do find it a bit annoying that not just for this film *spoilers* that the eagles have to save the day, again and again. If this is sticking to the books then that is okay but this is one thing I don't really like or understand fully. With all the elves, dwarfs, men, wizards, spirits that the only way of stopping the enemy is through eagles swooping in to win the battle. If they was explained more or given a section of the film or a previous film to say why they turn up and help all the time it would be great. This one little thing does have a little annoyance to me.
Furthermore I absolutely loved all the lord of the rings and hobbit movies, I am so gutted that there will be no more of them. It is like an end of an era in film for me as I grew up watching these films and loved every moment of them. I am going to buy this film when it comes out along with the rest of the hobbits to have all of them. would recommend this film to anyone but would have to of had a love for the lord of the rings or the previous hobbits to fully enjoy and understand the true brilliance of this franchise. Lastly which perhaps wont get as much credit as it deserves is the song at the end of the film through the credits performed by Billy Boyd, I loved this song and had to listen to it again and again, Brilliant.
8/10 but a 10/10 for the whole trilogy.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Excellent
I thought this film was a great portrayal or Alan Turing who really should have a lot more credit for his role in world war 2. I thought the storyline was great and the acting made it more compelling. I will defiantly watch this film again and hope it does become critically acclaimed as it deserves it. The film also brings up issues of certain laws which I will not spoil for anyone looking to watch the film, and these laws have since been changed for the better but is good to see a portrayal of them within this film.
I also thought Benedict Cumberbatch played the role really well with the sense of arrogance and likability well balanced. Keira Knightly and Mathew Goode along with other supporting cast all played their roles very well. The cast was a great choice and all ad good chemistry between them.
I would recommend this film to anyone and hope it is rewarded for its achievements.
