Prey (2022)
Paddington Bear Vs. Predator
It's not half bad, but if the bear had the foresight to don his yellow raincoat he would most certainly have prevailed given the apparel's presumed effect on the electromagnetic spectrum.
Russian Doll (2019)
A Diamond
Seriously, it's great.
Time travel, romance, the fight for freedom, the Berlin Wall, this series has it all. It's a bit misanthropic but (misandry vs. Misanthropy) we've earned it.
Apex science fiction.
Dune (2021)
Flawless
As a fan of the book and the older movie I had high expectations and expected to be disappointed in some way.
Many of the key moments that the David Lynch movie captured so well are preserved if not enhanced by staying closer to the original work.
Somehow Villinueve, the cast, and crew have managed to navigate the troubled ocean of sand between the written and earlier filmed work.
We are House Atreides. There is no call we do not answer. There is no faith that we betray.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Sopranos Lite
It's essentially a re-boot for the series with two hours establishing the turning point where the naive Tony Soprano begins his journey.
Star Trek: Lower Decks: No Small Parts (2020)
What a blast!
I can imagine that Lower Decks would be an acquired taste to some, distatestful to others. The show can come across as a bit crass.
This episode shows characters at their worst and at their best, somehow managing to compress the relatively banal comedy of the lower decks crew and comic foil of the bridge officer's apparent cluelessness to unpack it all later.
Qapla' !!!
Avenue 5 (2020)
This show is so bad I'm surprised light can escape from the screen when it is on.
The premise is a good one.
Many of the plot elements have potential to be hilarious.
Many of the characters are, individually, comical, some even likeable in their unlikeability.
The acting is good, even the acting acting is good.
I LIKE stuff that isn't subtle. I LIKE stuff that is awkward.
I could say that the cast has worse chemistry than the cast did on the first season of STN, but, of course, as krumblburgh points out, it's not sci-fi...
But it's not satire, either, because satire has an edge.
It's not a farce, either, because its characterizations illuminate nothing.
It's not bufoonery, because it is joyless and stupid, but not stupid enough to be funny.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
The tiramisù of Star Wars movies
The way Tiramisù is one of those things that people have thought about differently since 1993.
If JJ Abrams was following in Nora Ephron's footsteps with a movie that would play differently for different people I think he crushed it.
One of the popular reviews here from maxwelloreocookie says that the plot "Feels like it was written by a 12 year old"
For more than 2 hours I was a 9 year old kid clinging to the back of the seat in front of me and couldn't wait to see what would happen next and think that 12 year old is a pretty good writer.
I felt like I had just watched "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" at the same time.
I loved it.
The Irishman (2019)
Frequent cigarette breaks may help
Driving from Philadelphia to Detroit might be a better time than this movie. I've had enough mob /jfk conspiracy theories. Tuned out at that point. DeNiro with blue contacts is the highlight of the movie... that and stealing steaks.
Dark (2017)
Great writing, acting, directing, and production
I'd heard stories of 'Dark' being similar to 'Stranger Things' and it is, superficially.
I think the writing and acting is superb. While the show is quite deliberate in terms of its pace it certainly makes you question things at every turn.
If you're in the mood for bubble gum TV or movies and don't want to think about what you're watching it's not for you... If you're looking for a puzzle to think about make sure you've got the time to spare because it will probably hook you.
The show does deal with material that may make some uncomfortable.
'Dark' is a bit fanciful on the technology front... but there are things we think we understand, only to have them change completely a few decades later. It is sci-fi/horror/drama that hits the mark (no pun intended) on all three.
