Delhi Crime (2019)
Shockingly authentic.
Delhi Crime is yet another Indian television series helmes by Netflix created by the very talented Richie Mehta and it is based on the true story revolving around one of the most shocking rape cases namely the Nirbhaya case.
Right off the bat, Netflix is bringing out the best in India and are allowing creators to showcase everything openly without fearing censor certification and for a show like this that is absolutely necessary.
This show is brutal and gritty, incredibly simple in it's making and so raw in it's storytelling and still manages to fascinate people.
Throughout the 7 episodes you will follow along the lives of the police officers and the officials and their families as they try to deal with the case and catch the criminals all while facing the raging public and media.
First of all, the best thing about the show is the way it is made. The entire crew devoted their time to make this show incredibly realistic as if we are witnessing it in person. The camera shots are beautiful yet very simple. The background score is soft and mild without booming music and yet very haunting. The writing is simple and elegant and it feels like people talking rather than words on a printed script. The performances are lifelike and genuine with each and every cast member pulling out their best. Not even one person feels out of place here and all this combines to make a riveting experience which is backed up by a solid amount of good research.
Delhi Crime is incredible and a show that is absolutely worth your time. Netflix, you are saving Indian media.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Brilliance.
This episode is the long-waited battle episode after the previous 2 episodes taking a more slow and character focused storytelling. Everything we have waited is finally here and they did a fantastic job with it.
Amazing visuals, fantastic soundwork, amazing performances and brilliant action choreography, fantastic camerawork, I could go on and on about the good things in the episode and it won't end. A truly mesmerizing episode.
No matter what anyone says, this in itself is an amazing episode to watch, filled with tension and surprises and emotion. There a few logial issues that when we think sometimes some stuff doesn't make sense, and as a fan I've been waiting for an encounter with the night king for so long, some fans might be happy with how it came around, some might not so there is that.
Overall, the episode is fantastic, mighty entertaining to watch. I personally am a little bugged by how it ended but nevertheless this goes down in game of thrones history as one of the best episodes out there.
A true testament to why game of thrones is so great. Hats off to the creators.
Lucifer (2019)
Lucifer is entertaining and that's it.
So Lucifer is here and it was one of the most anticipated films to come out this year. Talks of this film were out many years ago and finally it's out and the responses have been mind-blowing. I myself got to see it a few days ago and while I do think the movie is great, I do think the whole 'lucifer is a masterclass' talk is false.
So let's start with the good stuff. The movie has 3 main things to it which is Prithviraj's direction, mohanlal's utilisation and mohanlal's screen presence and finally Murali gopy's writing.
Prithviraj is great here. His direction doesn't look like a debut. The movie looks amazing shot in mesmerizing 1:2:8 aspect ratio give us some gorgeous wide angle shots, clean looking action scenes, great use of tracking shots, it's all here and it's all good. Prithviraj knows what the fans want to see from Mohanlal and that is exactly what is displayed here and Mohanlal pulls that off in grand fashion because that's what he does best. There are some great dialogues here, references to other Mohanlal films and a ton of nods to other films as well which are great.
There are 27 characters in the film and while most of the characters have very little screen time because of such a large number, they utilise that well and give of great performances. Vivek Oberoi, Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier are the best after Mohanlal to give of captivating performances.
However, the plot by itself is rather similar to us. It's not something new, however the stories inside the plot are where it shines. The political aspects, and the in built stories of what all other characters go through are great but overall story not that great.
So overall Lucifer is an enjoyable film and I'd recommend it to people not for the over arching story but for the beautiful look of the film, some really badass scenes and Mohanlal in all his grandeur.
Lilli (2018)
A dark, gritty and violent thriller!
Lilli is a thriller movie directed by Prasobh Vijayan and stars Samyuktha Menon as the lead. There are only a handful of characters in the film and most of them are new faces. Lilli tells the story of Lilli, a pregnant woman who is kidnapped by 3 mysterious men and has to escape from their clutches against difficult odds. However, Lilli has its share of surprises which you have to experience from the theater because believe me, it blew me away.
First lets start with the good stuff. Lilli is a gory, bloody, gritty and incredibly violent film. It is perhaps the most violent and bloody film I have ever seen in Mollywood and thank god for that. It is a breath of fresh air to watch a thriller like this so raw, so bloody that most of the time I had to look away from the screen and believe me that does not happen to me most of the time. The performances are pretty good. The actors all serve their purposes. Samyuktha Menon was given an extremely challenging role and she gave it her all and it is evident on the screen and I commend her for that. The writing and storytelling is perhaps the most surprising aspect of the film. The story is straightforward and simple but the way it is presented on screen keeps the viewers constantly engaged and curious to see how the story will unfold. The movie does not have any songs in it and it is an uncut experience and thank god for that! The sound work is excellent, the scares pay off, the visuals are well set up and the cinematography is excellent.
Now let us get to the bad stuff and there are a few of them. First of all, there is one character brought into the movie from the beginning which I thought was a missed opportunity. It just ends in a weird way and felt like it could have been utilized better but the director had a vision for the character and I could see what he was going for but it could have been done better. Another major issue I have with the film is the ending, which I though was rather rushed and forced almost to the point where it felt like they didn't know how to end the story. It felt abrupt and leaves a bad taste in the mouth.
Another minor nitpick I have is a problem most movies like these have. The character is in pain and in a struggling situation throughout the film. Thus there are extensive shots of the character slowly walking in pain or grunting in pain etc. These can get a bit excessive and the movie can drag because of these sequences but nothing too major.
All in all, Lilli is a fine thriller with gory, violent and deeply disturbing tone, notable performances, ghastly visuals and a well written and well presented story. It is definitely a movie I would recommend to movie lovers and casual thriller fans alike.
Do not miss this one!
Varathan (2018)
An incredibly enjoyable action-flick with really good cinematography!
Varathan is a thriller-action drama movie directed by Amal Neerad starring Fahadh Faasil, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sharafudheen, Dileesh Pothan and various other talented faces and it tells the story of Abin and Priya, a couple settled in Dubai who after going through some hurdles in their personal and professional lives decides to move to Priya's father's estate back in Kerala. But things are not so friendly over there and the couple is faced with men who crave for a woman's body and a society of people who mock at a man and woman together.
Varathan is truly an entertaining movie, but it has it share of problems. However let us start with the good stuff first.
Firstly, the cinematography is jaw-dropping. Littil Swayamp has done it once in Parava and has done it again in Varathan and he is proving he is one of the most talented people in the industry. The camera shots and setting are presented beautifully and there is some amazing stuff to be seen towards the end of the movie.
Secondly, the acting. Fahadh Faasil knocks it out of the park once again as Abin, which we should be expecting at this point. He is one of the best in the malayalam industry. This is not in anyway the maximum of his potential as his character is one which does not have a lot of depth but its fine. Aishwarya Lekshmi gives out a genuinely good performance. Her character could have been annoying but she handles it with grace. Dileesh Pothan is fine as his character however he does not have much to do. The absolutely amazing performances of the movie belong to Sharafudeen and Vijilesh. They were fricking amazing, menacing, ruthless and genuinely annoying.
The background score and action scenes are very well done and put out a good show.
The bad parts of the movie are prominent. The movie falls into cliche territory, with a lot of the plot being predictable. You can see stuff happening miles before they actually happen and this is bad for any movie. This predictability makes the majority of the movie difficult to get through and thus the movie lags a lot. The plot is stretched out for so long. The director is intending to build the characters and the plot, however personally I feel as if these characters does not have much to be built about as they are caricatures of what they portray. Also a minor nitpick I have with this movie is that the songs does not really match the tone of the movie. Some of the songs break up that tone of the movie with booming EDM music which I thought were unnecessary.
However, I must mention the final 15-20 minutes of the film which will shake up the theatre. The action sequences are so goddamn good!
All in all, Varathan is an enjoyable thriller-action flick with some fine acting, good bgm, incredible cinematography and action sequences that will stick on your mind long after the credits roll.
I (2015)
One man Army!!!
Unbelievable. Just unbelievable!Frankly saying I didn't like Shankar's Robot at all. It didn't have any script. But I is as awesome as the trailer and teaser and music.Let's start off one by one:- 1.Storyline-Absolutely fantastic and intelligent. It is predictable at times but very good too. 2.Acting-Vikram is absolutely amazing. He is such a master of his art especially the hunchback role. Amy Jackson is good too and Suresh Gopi is really nice. 3.Action-Absolutely fantastic fight scenes. The Chinese fight scene is absolutely jaw-dropping 4.Music-All the songs by AR Rahman is absolutely amazing like we expected. 5.Climax-Spot on!! OVERALL-I is awesome. It is a little violent and now and then it is predictable. But Vikram nailed it with the hunchback character and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!!!
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Don't Listen to Critics,Go watch this!!!
After watching the trailer, I expected a lot from Age of Extinction. It is an excellent movie, book your tickets, grab some popcorn and watch this amazing movie! No matter what the Critics think this movie is freaking AWESOME. All the actors are really good especially Mark Walberg. New Comer Nicola Peltz is OK and the Transformers are amazing!!!! There are a lot of great fight scenes. The movie has humor which feels a bit flat and its a long movie. But its awesome!!! Don't think its a Micheal Bay Movie,Just go and watch it like any other action movie. You will love it. All the fight scenes are wonderful and there are some really epic scenes in the movie. The cars are also stylish and beautiful. Story is a little bit confusing at times but it holds together in the end.All in All I love this movie and I will recommend this to anyone
Godzilla (2014)
Not a great movie but still fun!
Straight up..........Not a great movie. After watching the trailer I had high expectations but the movie doesn't deliver. Bryan Cranston has done a superb job, but he is there only for the first 2-4 scenes of the movie. The rest is carried out by his son Ford Brody played by Aaron Johnson but he doesn't actually do anything. There are no expressions from him, its just pure lame acting! Some characters are awkward and inconsistent. But Big G looks awesome! He isn't there in the movie much but towards the ending the movie looks awesome. The action is great and Godzilla finally ends up saving the city rather than destroying it. It comes to an unexpected ending. If you are a guy who loves action then don't watch Godzilla. Its not that fun.But its good overall.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Worthy Sequel!
Amazing Spider-man 2 is Awesome! I was a guy who didn't like the first film one bit. But this one was worth the money! Andrew Garfield is yet again spectacular and I don't need to say about Emma Stone. But Jamie Foxx, really?? I didn't expect this after Jhango Unchained. His acting is nice and all but looks awkward. I still don't understand why Max Dillion(Electro/Jamie Foxx) Really became the villain. Dane Deehan(Harry Osborn) IS SPECTACULAR! His acting is over the top. The story isn't satisfying but its still fun. Harry comes at the ending and well(MAJOR SPOILER) kills Gwen. Well not kills but still she dies and that was Heartbreaking. And Rhino......well nothing much to say about him. Its still fun!TWO WORDS-AWESOME MOVIE!
