Breakout (I) (1984)

A Rare gem well worth seeking out
30 August 2005
I'l keep this review short and sweet. This movie involves a fugitive and a boy. Its one of those movies that would have really appealed to the young audience of the 1980's. And it would also have had an appeal to adults too. David Jackson plays the larger than life part of an on the run criminal called Donny The Bull. I saw this film years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I know that if you like a bit of action and something that appeals to a younger side in yourself then this is the film for you. I'm only going on memory here , but this film is something that has stuck with me for a very long time. I hope one day that I can track it down. It will be worth the effort.

Just watchable Horror with a slightly entertaining aspect
11 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I got this film from the bargain bin at my local video store as I was looking for a cheap film to watch then trade later on. I picked it for three reasons. The tape looked clean so it had minimal use. The $1.95price tag. And it had Boxer Ken Norton and William Smith in it.

OK .... well .... the movie is a sort of horror story that centers around a recently married woman who loses her husband on her wedding day. He is killed by some crooks who have lost face because of him. Among them is Ken Norton , the boxing Champ who defeated Muhammed Ali . He plays one of the crooks . Its obvious that Ken Norton now has a physical disability and this is a result of a terrible head injury that he sustained when he nearly died in a car accident back in 1986. Still compensations are made and its not so noticeable . A shame as he is a very articulate man and does have some acting experience , having starred in the 70's exploitation hit films , Mandingo and Drum. Still its good seeing him in film again.

At times the story is quite silly and for some reason that makes it watchable. Don't get me wrong , this is a pretty poor film but for some reason its watchable. Possibly because of the fact that even though the film lacks a lot , the story does move along. Another thing is that the gore and violent aspect of the standard low grade horror are applied in a slightly different way and sometimes what is usually anticipated is not always the case.

There seems to be a very slight delay in the sound linking and at times the dialog seemed to be in a narrative form.

The only real acting come from Detective Murdoch played by veteran tough guy William Smith and his partner Detective Ross played by Ernest Thomas. There seems to be a slight comedy routine between the two of them.

If you have a bit of time to kill it would probably be better spent watching a more worthwhile movie. But ! Then again this one isn't the worst one around and some people may enjoy it for some reason. There are a lot more movies that would be more of a waste of your time than this one.

Moonbase (1997)
6/10
Passable Sci Fi and action film worth looking at.
16 July 2005
I saw this a few years ago. I thought that it looked OK and OK it was. Not an outstanding movie by any means but it has some ingredients that make it appealing to certain people. Obviously to some it won't. One blessing that the film has is that it features veteran character action actor Stack Pierce who plays Will . When the film swings into action mode Stack Pierce's experience in this genre comes in very handy and he plays it well. This slightly better than mediocre Scifi film that is about escaped prisoners attempting to hijack the moon base and gain passage back to earth does have a few saving graces. Stack Pierce and Kurt Fuller are two of them , and I guess that you'll have to watch the film to see the others.

What you see is not as much as you will get , with this interesting documentary.
14 July 2005
I've seen this a couple of times and actually when I was watching it the first time I was half expecting to see some real horrors. But the real horrors are what you end up thinking about. Basically this film concentrates on two Tahiti families who have been effected and give their accounts in French and Tahitian. The men of the two families both worked on Moruroa Atoll in the sixties and the seventies. There is a bit of evidence in the deformity of one of the children , but what you get is what you learn from listening to the stories being told about their days there. And the ongoing results !!

And there is some real sadness in listening to these people who were just wanting to earn a bit of extra money by working on the atoll and by no accounts simple either but just naive enough not to realize the effects , short term or long term . There are also some accounts given by midwives and a possible former Tahitian nurse.

Like I said the impact isn't so much visual as it is thought-wise. And if you have any kind of open mind you're going to get it. And if you are capable of feeling you're going to feel sad too.

I think that the film is very well done and its portrayed in a candid way.

I can't help feeling that if they had been allowed more time there would have been a few more people to open up. There's obvious reasons why some people don't want to talk about it and its pretty sad that this is the case. But besides that this film still conveys a pretty powerful message .

Since there isn't any info on this at IMDb at this time , I will quote most of what is on the cover.

------------------ MORUROA THE BIG SECRET ------------------

"This documentary is subversive and unpatriotic" -- Francis Leotard , Defence Minister , France

"Since 1963 ,France has used the peaceful atoll of Moruroa as the target for almost 180 explosions both in the atmosphere and under sea level. France has claimed that all the tests were not dangerous for people in that region. Today it is clear that the Tahitians are not all of this opinion." -- Michel Daeron , DIRECTOR

"A Scrutinising inquiry into a burning subject which reveals distressing facts on the state of health of the Polynesians and implies the worst about the unbroken silence of the military" -- FIGARO MAGAZINE (PARIS)

"Contrasted against the horrific evidence available in MORUROA -- THE BIG SECRET , the French decision (to resume nuclear testing) seems simply outrageous" -- SUE WILLIAMS , THE Australian

"Creates a tension that leaves the viewer siding with the locals who have been hoodwinked by the French for almost thirty years." -- SYDNEY MORNING HERALD , PINK GUIDE

"This disturbing deco introduces men and women whose simple wisdom refutes anything contained in official communiques ... A TOTAL SMACK IN THE FACE WITH A MUTANT MACKERAL!!!" -- Doug Anderson , SYDNEY MORNING HERALD

"Why is it that the cancer rate in the Archipelago is one of the highest in the world ? This is one of many upsetting questions that come to mind while watching this outstanding documentary" -- TELERAMA (PARIS)

Woody Strode is one good reason to watch this and one other ? Well I'm not too sure.
24 June 2005
Being some one who likes to catch a movie that features Woody Strode I decided to get this movie out. Well I could be forgiven for thinking that this was a sequel to THE FINAL EXECUTIONER (1984) that featured William Mang and Harrison Muller and also Margit Evelyn Newton. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085540/ The reason for this looking to like a sequel is because this movie , THE BRONX ECCUTIONER seems to start where THE FINAL EXECUTIONER finishes. But thats not the case at all ! What it is , is actually is footage from THE FINAL EXCECUTIONER has been put into this movie. I have to admit that this is pretty clever how they did it. If someone never saw THE FINAL EXCECUTIONER they probably wouldn't notice it. This in part is due to the storyline being pretty basic and confusing at times. Also with the dubbing you lose a bit of the plot too.

When The Final Excecutioner was released when Woody Strode would have been about 69 or 70 years old. The Bronx Excecutioner was released when Woody was 75 years old. But as I mentioned the footage was taken from The Final Excecutioner so Woody Strode didn't actually take part in this movie in actual terms. Never mind !

The scene where Woody Strode takes on some guys is fairly good and I have to say that for a man of his age probably 69 at the time , Woody could do all of the stuff and go through the motions. He also did his own stunts in the film too. I have to mention again that it was pretty clever how they inserted Woody Strode into the film but thats the main reason that this movie has any sort of worth. Other than that well there is some passable action and a story line thats pretty much senseless but with an occasional surprise . But besides that I have to say that I'd be flat out trying to find anything else good about this film.

Fairly good martial arts action and enough to entertain - Interesting Cast !
18 June 2005
I first saw this film about 25 years ago at the movies and then on video about 6 years ago. There is a good cast here in this movie and thats its saving grace. Well actually one of the saving graces. Pretty good action here , even though there is a bit much of the stick fighting ! A passable story line too. Its set in the Philippines when ruled by Spain.

Roland Dantes a former Mr Philippines plays the hero's part and the wonderful Gilbert Roland plays his father. Nancy Kwan his mother. Alejandro Rey plays a very nasty role as the Spanish Governor here and Dean Stockwell is bad guy too.

Two of the most memorable things about this movie are the credits that seem to keep popping up for quite a while. The other is the perverted type of person Alejandro Rey becomes as a result of a pretty nasty event.

The hero will have to battle against the governors son who is now being tutored by a Japanese Samurai. To be able to do this there are some tests that he must first accomplish as well as learning to do things in a totally different way, Its not all as text book as other martial arts films though.

There are a few silly scenes in this film but the rest of it is pretty good. Don't worry too much about things that don't add up , just enjoy it.

Roland Dantes .. Nancy Kwan .. Guy Madison .. Alejandro Rey .. Gilbert Roland Dean Stockwell

An enjoyable and quaint 1970's Martial Arts Movie from the Philippines with Black Male Leading actor
16 June 2005
This movie has it ! The formula for fun and entertainment. OK so its lacking in some areas but for whatever it lacks it certainly makes up for in the humor and action department. This movie will certainly appeal to different range of people , including those who are into the Black Action movies of the seventies and fans of the seventies Martial Arts films. This movie is a combination of both genre's.

The film starts off with an interesting almost surreal beginning and kicks off with a super funky 1970's instrumental theme . The music is by Tito Sotto ! Tito Sotto who was also an actor ,later on became a senator in the Philippines. Among his other music work he composed the music for a film called Blind Rage , a movie which featured Leo Fong and Fred The Hammer Williamson. Anyway the other music throughout the movie ranges from good easy jazzy lounge to very funky.

The film itself starts off almost with a setting from a Hammer Horror film of the sixties or early seventies and one could almost think that they're in store for something like The Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires which was a Hammer / Golden Harvest . But thats where the similarity ends.

Instead the movie is about an Black American newly wed couple , a champion boxer and his bride on their honeymoon . And they get caught up in events because of reasons that aren't apparent to them for quite a long time. Instead of being romantic with his beautiful bride (Shirley Washington) Cal Jefferson "The Champ" (James Iglehart)has to fend off assailants and can't understand why they are after him or what they want.

There is something that the bad guys are after and will stop at nothing to get. Something very deadly ! Along the way they inherit a Chinese Mute companion who gets caught up in events and the action. He happens to be a skilled martial artist and these skills of his are put to good use.

All of this puts a bit of suspense into the movie and along with some good fight scenes and some comic moments thrown in this movie makes for an enjoyable film.

There is a good memorable climax and ending to this movie. This all makes sense and if you've forgotten what the story was about for some reason then this will remind you.

There is a good cast in this movie , James Iglehart some will recognize as Randy Black from Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls 1970 ... Angels Hard as They Come 1971 (a biker movie) . The lovely Shirley Washington as his bride , also Marissa Delgado , Chiquito ,Eddie Garcia and Ken Metcalfe star in this film. Also as a bonus you'll see Vic Diaz in a cameo role as a hotel clerk.

Out of the movies of this type and in this genre I would say that this is definitely one of the better ones . I can see most people watching this and enjoying it only a few very fussy people would possibly be disappointed.

And if there was anything more funky than the theme , what about the title ?

BAMBOO .... GODS .... AND .... IRON .... MEN

The Black 6 (1973)
6/10
Great in its genre and good enough on any occasion
5 June 2005
The Black Six isn't the greatest movie around but what do you rate it against ? There aren't that many black biker movies around. The Black angels would be slightly better and movies like JC and the one with Motown singer Marvin Gaye only featured black actors. As a Black Biker movie in the genre its pretty good , and as a movie its good enough ! Actually its quite enjoyable most of the time and the action at the end makes it more or less well worth it and a great climax. The soundtrack is good funky stuff and the title song is absolutely amazing ! I don't know if the song "The Black Six" was ever released on 45 but the stylus would have a pretty hard job of staying in the groove as it would be dancing all over the place.

The movie is basically about a white girl and a black guy who fall in love. The white girls brother is in a motor bike gang and is a racist and he and his buddies kill the black guy. The Black six are six decent but no nonsense black ex army buddies who ride together . Also the guy who was killed by the racist bikers is the brother of one of the six. So its the revenge thing here with some adventure on the way. And an amazing climax and the end of the movie. Great action !

Blood Street (1988)

Quite enjoyable Not too bad in the action sense
30 May 2005
I saw this film a few years ago and the main reason for getting it was due to the fact that Leo Fong and Stack Pierce were in another film together. I was expecting to see Cameron Mitchell pop up somewhere but it didn't happen.

Leo Fong again reprises his role as PI and he's not to bad in this one. I think that Leo Fong displays here some of his acting ability , or is it just charisma ? Well whatever it is Leo Fong is good ! Some great action scenes from him and the one with him beating up some guys in the bar is great ! The story isn't bad and with the way it comes off , the movie is quite enjoyable. Stack Pierce of course is great as Solomon and he's always convincing. I'll pick up the DVD of this one as its always good to catch again.

Surprising action in the desert
30 May 2005
This comment below sums it up quite well

------------------------------

An overlooked film, 14 September 2000

Author: goya-4 from PA USA

About long distance runners who are kidnapped by some vigilantes in the desert in New Mexico. This movie was one of those late night finds..it is a very suspenseful film that you will not change the channel from.. A very worthwhile rental that will keep you engaged from start to the bitter end..on a scale of one to ten..8

------------------------

At the least this is what it is , in fact its sort of like that Dennis Weaver film "Duel" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067023/

In time it could possibly become a cult classic like Duel. I remember reading Leonar Maltin's review or should I say LACK OF REVIEW. Because its obvious that he never saw this movie. Because if he had ... I'm sure that he'd pass favorable comment on this.

Basically .... If you like action with some pretty good performance , this move will entertain you. Ronny Cox is a very good actor and plays his part very well. There is some real action and suspense in this movie. And i you can pick up a DVD at a reasonable price , its worthwhile to have in your collection.

Killpoint (1984)

OK Good action from the Leo Fong stable , weird and violent !
30 May 2005
Leo Fong as Lt. James Long is slightly subdued in his role but he still makes good in his scenes. There are some good fights here and a good 80's type of soundtrack. The song by Ramona Gibbons ... "Living On The Inside" is great for the ending of this movie.

Well the plot isn't brilliant and some of the actors are a little bit wooden. Michael Farrell as Captain Skidmore and Larry Lunsford as Agent Crawford are the sort of characters that would have appeared in the TV series of Mission Impossible in the sixties.

But this in its own way works for this movie. Still other actors make up for it. You'll notice a few actors here that Leo Fong uses in his other films. Stack Pierce , Hope Holliday and Cameron Mitchell and a couple of the extras too.

Stack Pierce as Nighthawk is great and very menacing. He is one of the most under appreciated actors around. Its hard to believe that he hasn't greater status as an actor.

Leo Fong well he gives an OK performance as LT Long and he is a pretty tough looking guy. And of course quite handy with his fists.

Cameron Mitchell who's was a very good actor seems to be the most weird perverted psychopathic creature around. This has to be seen to be believed !

Richard Rowntree is also in this movie which makes it worthwhile.

I could see what could nearly have happened if the film was directed in a different way or more avenues explored. There were some hints at excellence in different parts of this movie ,nearly there but just not quite ! The movie was probably made on a reasonable budget and there is good entertainment value in it. The shortcomings of this movie are out-weighed by its positive aspect. The thing about this movie is the memory of it isn't good as the actual watching. Seeing it again and then I think ..... mm that was quite good !

Low Blow (1986)

A fairly good action movie with a good cast !
30 May 2005
A pretty good cast here with ... Leo Fong , Cameron Mitchell , Stack Pierce , Akosua Busia , Troy Donaghue , Diane Stevenett and I think that Hope Holliday plays a small part as a Head Mistress of a school.

Four of these actors incl Leo Fong are from the other movie Kill Point ! Cameron Mitchell (High Chapparel 1960's TV Western) as Yarakunda is just plain weird. Akosua Busia (Colour Purple) as the sadistic Karma , is weird as well but SO gorgeous it isn't funny. Diane Stevenett as Joe Wong's secretary Diane is really cute and plays her part fairly well. Stack Pierce as Corky , as always is mean looking deadly and certainly comes up well , as well as can be expected. I'm sure though that his part in the movie has a different name , possibly "Duke". Anyway he throws some good punches. He is a first rate actor !

I suppose that you can't expect any Oscar award winning from Leo Fong , but never the less I have seen worse actors. Actually Leo Fong isn't too bad as an actor and even though he's never had the coaching I'd bet he's got more ability than Arnie and JCVD. He can be quite funny at times and has his moments and you realize that you get a liking for the guy.

I suppose that he's a little mechanical , but you can see the breaks where he lightens up every so often.

The movie is a bit better than mediocre and has some good action scenes. Leo Fong is quite a good martial artist and even though you don't see all of the acrobatics and technical trickery etc ... you get some realistic scenes. Fong as you can see is a pretty strong guy and for his age he does well. The best action part is in the building where Fong takes on a couple of guys an does them over. The part on the stair case is good !

All in all I quite enjoyed the movie and his part as Joe Wong. And what a rough scruffy PI he is. You sort of get the impression that as soon as he'd make the money from a case he'd spend it on whatever before the bills etc.

I own this on DVD now but I saw it a couple of years back and then I recalled seeing it sometime in the late 80's . I thought that the actor was MA Expert and board breaker Pu Gill Gwon , the author of "The New Forms of Tae Kwon Do" Anyway its not Pu Gill Kwoon or Pu Gill Gwon , Its Leo Fong an I'm glad that I have the movie as I'll watch it again.
