Athena (2022)
Misunderstood Narrative
I'm surprised by all the negative reviews of this film. The cinematography is indeed impressive and groundbreaking. If the viewer can't connect with the story, he might at least be able to connect with the lens. Nonetheless, I believe the complexity of the story requires more thought than most reviewers are willing to give. This is a story of impotent, misdirected outrage against law enforcement. The news reports, "the attackers may not have been officers, but far-right extremists aiming to aggravate recent tension..." Police investigators say, "We think it's a far-right group. They aren't our men." But these vital messages are completely ignored by the outraged mob. The Athena mob forges its path of destruction, with a crescendo of violence, killing multiple, innocent police officers whom are vindicated in the final scene of the film -- as we witness the fringe group of Christian separatists (the "far-right group" referred to earlier) committing their devious crime wearing police uniforms in a "false flag" style event. This film illustrates how a tiny, deceptive spark can ignite a massive and devastating, "social justice" crime wave lasting for days -- with the Athena mob effectively behaving as "useful idiots" in the destruction of their own image and community.
These Final Hours (2013)
Loved this one
This one took me by surprise. If you appreciate fine cinema, you ought to love this one, too. The writing, casting, directing, production and soundtrack are all excellent. Young actress Angourie Rice, as other reviewers have noted, offers an especially memorable and deeply emotional performance. Nathan Phillips, Jessica De Gouw, Sarah Snook, Lynette Curran, Daniel Henshall and supporting cast are also excellent and convincing. This is a great film; full of drama, emotion, suspense and beauty ... please don't miss it. p.s. My other favorite films from Oceania are 'Bliss' (1985, Australia) and 'The Quiet Earth' (1985, New Zealand).
Interstellar (2014)
The Emperor's New Clothes
This film is guaranteed to make some viewers cry... for their time and money back! Most overrated IMDb rating, ever. With so many praising it, few will criticize it... for the cliché-fest it truly is.
Nolan's films tend to have some things in common; too long, too loud, too busy and... quite BORING! Interstellar (2014) is no exception... reminds one of Frequency (2000) slightly upgraded for the 21st century.
Okay, you've got your multi-million-dollar special effects, well- done... but as far as cinema goes, a big ZERO on the emotional involvement scale.
p.s. I saw this film at a packed IMAX movie theater and when the film ended only ONE person dared to start clapping but quickly stopped himself when realizing he was all alone... very sad, but true!
