Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2022)
I hated the series but I did not hate this movie
Don't let your hate for the series stop you from watching this movie. The plot wasn't Shakespearean by any means but it's a solid movie and tries to retcon a lot of things fans have hated about the series. It's fun, it's touching and there's character growth for once. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2018)
New life in TMNT... but is it actually good?
It's TMNT in name only... for purists this might be too much, but for casual fans Rise does a great job making things a decade old new and fresh. Each episode is unpredictable and so much of a departure -- thematically and character wise -- from the original that this is essentially a new property. They're not really ninjas nor are they turtles. Does this make it good? It's subjective and it all really depends on the mindset you have going into it.
As a fan of all the previous incarnations I am willing to accept this new take as an alt universe similar to the old Mirage comics when the stories veered off from the main path. Would I keep watching it? Probably. Are they worse than the Michael Bay turtles? Maybe not? But that verdict isn't definitive yet.
6/10
Good:
-New take on an old property
-It's actually funny
-Unpredictable plots
-Great animation (not to be confused with design)
Bad:
-Doesn't feel like the TMNT
-Character design leaves less to be desired
I imagine casual fans who are into the wacky over the top silly modern cartoons and flat animation will like it very much. Give it a try, maybe it will grow on you.
