The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp: Wyatt Meets Doc Holliday (1957)
Douglas Fowley & Val Kilmer
Val Kilmer's masterful performance of Doc Holliday in Tombstone must have been based in some way upon the delightful performance of Doc Holliday by Douglas Fowley in this episode of The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. Kilmer put the finishing touches on Doc, but watch this episode and tell me you can't see Fowley in Kilmer's performance (or vice versa). No other rendition of Doc Holliday in film and TV is as close to Kilmer's as Fowley's was. Looking forward to the next episode of The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp.
The show, as a whole, is definitely one of the best westerns from the mid 1950s. Unusual in it's a capella sound track; and it uses music-free footage and serious dialogue-free moments (silence) that remind me of the style used by European black and white film directors from that era. True, Hugh O'Brian's Wyatt drank only milk and he had no mistresses who were prostitutes, but he does a great job as Wyatt. Besides, we're talking about the 1950s when kids like me idolized the heroes of television. Prostitutes and alcohol would have been unthinkable of our hero back then. But there is plenty of satisfying action. And when it comes to whacking a bad guy unconscious with his Buntline, O'Brian's Earp never holds back and he never hesitates.
Star Trek: Discovery: The Galactic Barrier (2022)
A 3 due to unintelligible whispering
Seems like "whispering" (low talking for Seinfeld fans) has become "drama" over the past several years. It's become ridiculous in the case of Captain Burnham. This episode's closed captioning was not in synch with the speech, making it annoying hard to understand what she was saying on several occasions. This low talking technique is no longer a contribution to the ambience of the drama. It's simply and utterly annoying.
Hinterland (2013)
What's not to like?
Excellent story lines. Beautiful scenery. Great acting. Individual episodes offers a unique murder mystery, but there is also an underlying mystery that runs throughout the entire series from beginning to end that ties it all together for a finale that is Intriguingly apropos. This series is well worth watching.
Beautiful Boy (2018)
Track attributed to the wrong Richard James
The track Nanou2 is mistakenly attributed to the talented Richard James, actor and playwright. He is, however, not Richard D. James, who is also known as Aphex Twin.
The Last Ship: Warriors (2018)
Great direction
I don't get the denigration of this episode. I thought it was different, sure. But it was a welcome change that tied a lot of things together in the storyline. Weller's direction was genius. Lots of perspectives were handled. My favorite was the guys in that wine cellar waiting for extraction - reminded me of something I have not seen since the original Twilight Zone. The final scene was touching, and prescient of the end of the series. I give it a solid 10, and if you don't agree, watch it again.
Fear the Walking Dead: Laura (2018)
Garrett Dillahunt
I've always enjoyed seeing Dillahunt act. He has done something so tender with Dorie this season, but particularly in this episode. Dorie brought forth from me an appreciation for Dillahunt that supersedes my previous respect for the characters he portrays. I was happy to see him come on board Fear, and I was rewarded beyond my high expectations.
Dice (2016)
Funny as hell.
Funny as hell. Period. I don't buy the negative reviews at all. Dice is playing this perfectly. No longer the young stud playing stadiums, he plays the older and less successful Diceman with a ton of humor and self-deprecating dignity. Hoping for a third season.
