Das Boot (2018– )

Das Boot - The Sequel TV series
6 January 2019
Too many 'reviewers' tend to always compare a follow up production with the original. Whilst it is clear that the original film - Das Boot, was arguably the most accurate submarine movie ever made, with gripping storyline, superb acting and special effects throughout. This TV adaptation/sequal takes the story of the most perilous occupation of WW2, into intrigueing terriotory.

Most poingnant of which, are the allegories present throughout the story, not least of which, the analog with current international politics and the fact that war only benefits the military industrialists, most especially of the USA.

I found this series engaging and the acting superb, given that most were probably in infant school when the original was aired. I for one, seriously hope that a second season is intended, hopefully before the collapse of civilisation and our planet's environmental breakdown becomes reality.

Biographical documentary of the actor - Leonard Nimoy
30 November 2016
It is not that often that one is moved emotionally when watching a biographical documentary, but this had me both laughing, smiling, nodding, empathizing and yes certainly shedding the odd tear... .

This is quite simply a superb tribute to the life and times of one of the most influential and inspiring celebrities of our time - Leonard Nimoy(1931-2015).

Peppered with rostrum footage of many of the actors connected with Star Trek. Particular noteworthy were the sentiments of George Takei (Sulu), Bill Shatner (Kirk), Walter Koenig (Chekov), Nichelle Nichols (Uhuru) and Neil DeGrasse Tyson... Sentiments, equally echoed by the entire cast of the new film series.

Even if you are not a 'Trekkie', this film will reach, where no other bio-documentary films have gone before.

Beautifully and thoughtfully directed by his son Adam Nimoy. Which no doubt Spock would have approved of and would probably have found... quite fascinating.

Marco Polo (2014–2016)

Under the Great Blue Sky - All as It should be.
14 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This is without doubt one of the best historical dramas I have watched to date. The cinematography was excellent. Very well directed, excellent casting and the acting was superb. One really felt like one was out there on the steppes. The choreography both in the martial arts displayed and the horsemanship were executed with precision and accuracy.

Of course, the 'Travels of Marco Polo' are regarded in much controversy, given that the original manuscript writings - reportedly from some 150 or so sources, would have been open to interpretation, not least of which, his tales were transcribed vocally to a fellow inmate whilst he languished in a Genoese prison after the civil war between Venice, his home city and Genoa.

Thus the script for this epic series does justice to the many varied accounts of Marco Polo. (SPOILER) No one knows for sure whether Polo became a trusted confidante, in the service of the Great Khan - Kublai, but who cares? The intrigue and attention to historical detail, even allowing for artistic license, was palpable enough to our western eyes.

We now have the technology to make these TV series more realistic (...like 'Black Sails' - Yet another superb production). I hope for one to see more of these historical accounts produced to the same degree of perfection. Well done! To all who made this series happen. And a big thumbs down to those who could only moan in their pathetic reviews...
