Mister Organ (2022)
Riveting
The more I went down the rabbit hole the more interesting it got. Extremely well put together documentary about a wheel clamper but as the intro says, there's much more to this story than meets the eye. The story is intriguing and plays out much like a good whodunnit. I hear there's another documentary out by this same producer so I am going to have to source it after watching this one. Thoroughly enjoyed this from start to finish. Full of twists and turns and wtf's? Almost a comedy but for the dark side of the whole story. Keeps the viewer wanting more. Highly recommend this to any armchair sleuths out there and even if you're not I think you will still enjoy it.
The Menu (2022)
Enjoyable entertainment
If you want to be horrified and amused at the same time this is a movie for you. Some great acting. This movie always had me guessing as to what would happen next. Hilarious ending (read the menu caption at the end). The characters were great. The chef played his part to a tee. Some of the other characters were quite funny. The menu items were really well done. Some of them looked 5-star quaIity. I really enjoyed this movie. It was full of surprises. The actress from the gambit was excellent. I recommend this movie based on a the fact it ticks a lot of boxes in my opinion. Something different.
The Card Counter (2021)
Somewhat slow and boring though watchable
I was looking forward to watching this movie starring Oscar Isaac and produced by Martin Scorsese particularly as it sounded like it had an interesting plot.
Although I watched it through and there were some interesting parts to it overall I found the movie quite slow. I think what mostly kept my interest was trying to figure out some things like the routine Tell went through after checking into a motel (which in the end is never really explained.
Can only give this 6/10.
Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall (2022)
Mindblowing
Exceptionally well made documentary on the disappearance and murder of an innocent journalist.
What starts out as a harmless interview and tour of a home made submarine with its owner, the story turns into one of mystery when only 1 person returns from what was supposed to be a short 2 hour tour out to sea.
The story of what happens is well told with the story flipping back and forth between interviews with different people so it keeps you guessing as to what actually happened. When the details finally came out I just sat there with my jaw on the floor asking why??
The details of what happened is nothing short of disturbing. The reason 'why' is as dark as it is evil.
I found this short 2-part documentary one of the best movies I've ever seen. It kept me guessing then knocked me out when it revealed the details of what occurred. The plot would make excellent material for a fictional, thriller movie - only this is true.
Highly recommend.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Don't look away
Loved this movie. Absorbing. Never a dull moment. Excellent acting. So many twists and turns right up to the very end. All movies should be made this way. Might watch again to see if I pick up on anything I missed the first time around.
Devil's Island (2021)
Disappointing
The trailer didn't look too bad but the movie and more importantly 'the plot' eh. Mildly entertaining. Kept waiting for something to happen that would shed some light on the 'mystery' of the island but it never did. Overall too many holes that just never get filled in.
The Rover (2014)
Keeps you watching
I really enjoyed this movie. From start to finish I was always left wondering what would happen next. Guy Pearce does an excellent job portraying a man with nothing to lose..except his car lol. The brother of the guy that steals it and whom Guy teams up with to find it, plays his part perfectly. Its a pity I've not seen him in more movies. He really plays the part well and for me was the main star. A short way into the movie I thought about turning it off but I'm glad I didnt. What happens next is always a surprise.
Black Summer (2019)
Addictive!
Being one who likes good zombie flick this one is great and highly addictive, particularly in the way it sequences the various timelines which forces you to keep watching to find out what happened in the past. Negative point/s aside first, what I don't understand is how for example, an individual can get hit by a car and is instantly a zombie? My understanding is to become a zombie you must be bitten by another zombie or have their blood coughed on you for example, but what makes this movie all the more frustrating is its not consistent. Others can get knocked about and dont turn into zombies? And with those that do, some 'turn' instantly, while others can take hours or days. It makes no sense. Also, there are lots of little things like they walk into a house covered in snow and its all instantly melted? That aside, the individual stories (aka black mirror) are great. In my opinion the acting is also very good. You don't come across any acting that's that bad you want the actor to die. I watched the first season which was very good then the 2nd was released a few days later on Netflix and I watched the whole 8 episodes within 24 hours. It really does keep pushing you to find out what happens next or to have explained what happened in a previous 'missing' timeline. I really enjoyed both seasons and am looking forward to season 3 in 2024 and hopefully more beyond (but with less of a wait!). 9/10.
The Last Full Measure (2019)
Keeps you watching to the end
Some great actors make up for any criticisms you might feel toward this movie. Emotional from start to ending. It's a shame they give away early on what happened to the soldier that was recommended for the MOH. It would have been better if they kept it until the end. Apart from that, it is a movie 'inspired' by true events so is easy to follow along without questioning too much. Part of the way in I was beginning to think it was just another movie but it surprised me in the way it kept me engaged. Very good.
The Pacific (2010)
Spielberg and Hanks did it again - Hugely immersive
From the very first episode I was hooked. On par with Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, The Pacific delivered on all points. The battle scenes are extremely immersive. I liked how the series covered what it must have been like to be in the middle of combat, but at the same time maintaining the human side to the cruelty. It kept me coming back to watch the next episode, much like many of the HBO mini-series. I am into the 9th episode now but felt already I need to write a review. Its hard to get out of your head. I'm not an emotive individual, but this had me digging deep into my emotions on numerous occasions. It's pretty much impossible to avoid. Couldn't fault the series in any way. 10/10
Welcome Home (2018)
Disappointing
The movie promised a lot but left me feeling frustrated. Its almost as though the movie was written as it was at the same time being produced.
Kidnap (2017)
Really??
I gave this 3 stars only for its humour value. Had me shaking my head all the way through it and should have turned it off 30 mins in hindisght. Just laughable that this is supposed to be a serious movie.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Enjoyable old style western
I really enjoyed this movie. The actors in it which included Samuel L Jackson from Pulp Fiction played their parts exceptionally well. In fact, the acting all round was top notch. I loved just watching the old style stagecoach trekking about the place.
The Inn 'door' scenes were extremely funny and added a nice touch. Its a long movie but it kept my attention all the way late at night right to the very end. If you liked 'And then there were none' or similar plot stories you will love this movie. Kept me guessing to the end. Recommended.
47 Meters Down (2017)
What can I say?
If I could give this movie 0 stars I would. They should have called it "Hilarious scenes 150 feet down". Totally unbelievable. Fell asleep multiple times. Waste of 2 hours of my life.
I Am Mother (2019)
Suspenseful all the way through!
Loved this movie. Had me guessing all the way along as to what was going to happen next. Sci-fi affects were great. Great plot. Highly recommend.
Gotti (2018)
Great movie
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Great acting by Travolta.
Lone Survivor (2013)
Highly disappointing
This film could have been so much more, yet it falls short on so many points. Real Navy SEALS these guys ain't.
I highly suggest you read the book 'Lone Survivor' by Marcus Luttrell if you want to know what really happened and get a real feel of being there. It will grip you 100 x more than this film will & will also fill in the many facts left out of the story; the biggest one being the horrendous chapter of him surviving on his own against all odds, surrounded by Taliban, badly wounded, yet continuing to fight on & kill the enemy, until he was finally rescued.
This film fails to incite any emotion on any level. In many ways, this film seems to be just 'going through the motions' and I honestly think I could have easily fallen asleep through it.
