Gojira tai Megaro (1973)
Challenge to take seriously
The modern Godzilla movies suffer from not enough screen time for the actual monsters. This one is a variation on the theme. The first half has just people driving around in cars, the second half us however just plain stupid. There is what feels like half an hours of pure 4 way monster battle action, with all of the tension of 8 year olds doing an impression of a power rangers show. It is daft.
The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019)
Please ignore the predictable closet racism
This was simply great interpretation of the story. I studied Dickens at A lev and have loved his work ever since. The book is effectively a series of extended character studies;the amusing, the tragic and the grotesque.
OK, this version emphasises the Black Adder elements of the book, but it's warm take on the story. They should have made a mini series.
Please ignore the Brexit style comments "it's PC hone mad", the cast choices gave it a wonderful tonal feel
The Dark Tower (2017)
It's hard to know what they were thinking
This is so off the mark as a Dark Tower interpretation, I genuinely don't know what they were trying to do. Taken on its own terms, and putting the source material to one side, its a mess, but as a intro to the series it's just a mess.
I suppose you could argue it's set in one of the repeat pasts or futures of the story, but it still makes a dogs tail of it.
I liked the casting of the Gunslinger tho.
UFO (1970)
Xcom the series
Fantastic period piece for its time. The set / equipment designs are spot on, as is the soundtrack. You can see its echoes in Space 1999, which shared ideas from 2001.
Ed Bishop perfectly cast, and the almost slips into Captain Scarlet are forgivable.
If you want watch Anderson''s work try Captain Scarlet then UFO then the first series of Space 1999.
Left Behind (2014)
A terrifying movie !
Is it scary because of tension? Is it alarming? Are there as many jumps as Jaws?
No, it's obviously terrifying because some people out there believe in this stuff..
Liu lang di qiu (2019)
Art direction fantastic, the rest errrrrrr
Looks great, some even look like Sci fi book covers from the 80''s
The film tho is borderline cack
Dracula (2020)
Fantastic fresh take on the legend
Please ignore all they nay sayers, this is wonderful new take on the story.
Script is witty but there is still plenty of horror and gore for genre fans. The best element probably is the casting of Count D himself tho, he is up there with Lee.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (2015)
The have pitched this one perfectly
Of course when you have read the book, a television adaptation often disappoints. However, this is pitch-perfect. Tone, production and (above all acting) is bang-on.
This has all the qualities of a premium BBC costume drama title, but with the tongue in cheek, almost Blackadder style fantasy. Of course, the end of the first episode hints at the far darker turns ahead in the source material.
Like Mad Men, Game of Thrones and Chucklevision, this is what quality TV should be. My only concern is that the original source is not a doorstop of a novel and that the producers might be tempted to pad out some of the mid-section of the story.
Finally for those with an interest in script writing - even if you don't like this type of fiction, this is a absolute masterclass in adaptation.
The Alligator People (1959)
Fix my arm - and make it snappy
This one is from the "anti science" sub genre of 50's SciFi. A scientist attempts to learn the secrets of cell regeneration with somewhat mixed results.
While this is all a pretty obvious attempt to cash in on the success of The Fly, it is good fun. The plot (even without seeing the poster) is 101% predictable.
In what seems like a sensible medical experiment, the doctor tries a serum distilled from the thyroid glands of alligators. It clearly will help accident victims re-grow lost limbs.
No doubt, you have already guessed one of the scenes..
"Look darling, the doctors have made my arm better"
"But you have a bloody great heinous alligator's head".
Trouble is - we can all laugh at 50's movies now, but this one gave me nightmares, along with The Incredible Shrinking Man.
