Maximum Overdrive (1986)

An instant favorite!!!!

Wait a second, this movie has a IMDb rating of 5.4, Metascore of 24 and 15% on Rottentomatoes. Yet, it has a overkickass AC/DC soundtrack, an overcool beginning with the brigde, an overcute Emilio Estevez, overrad special effects, overbadass trucks, overwicked dialogues (Curtis: we gotta get some gas. Connie: that's good because I got to go to the ladies room. Curtis: can I come in and watch? Connie: No, you cannot come in and watch! Curtis: Damn.), overintense love affair and finally, overslick direction from Stephen King. This movie is unfortunately the opposite of overrated. Apparently even King himself, when asked why he didn't direct any movie after maximum overdrive, said: just watch maximum overdrive. Well, either we are missing out because he felt pressured by critics to say that or either it's a good thing he didn't do more movies because he would've changed is style totally. This here, is a gem of a movie I tell you! Let's just look at some of the characters names: Bill, Brett, Brad, Barry, Curt, Deke and Steve. Splendid. I think this movie would make a great combo with Tremors. My rating: 8/10.

The Horror Network Vol. 1 (2015)

Only the fourth story was worth it, but it WAS worth it!!

Here's how I would rate the 5 stories : 3Am: ffwd 50% of it. Who can endure this? It's atrocious. 1/10

Edward: ffwd 75% of the conversation. The end was alright. 3/10

Quiet: More boring 2/10

Merry little Christmas (AKA "The one with the monster from the poster".): Made my body shiver, my heart race, my eye tear up as I clench my teeth through most of it. I want to be shocked. I was. No clue what this masterpiece does hiding inside this pile of pure garbage. 9/10

The deviant one: Garbage that was funny for a second. 2/10

So final verdict is, if you need a good fix of hardcore horror, watch Merry little Christmas but dismiss the rest.

Lucky Luke: Ballad of the Daltons (1978)

Winter classic since 1985

This has « classic » written all over it. ALL OVER it. And I say 1985 because that's when I was born. It plays each year during holidays and I saw it maybe 10 or 15 times. If you don't know Lucky Luke, Jolly Jumper, Rantanplan or the Dalton brother then it just makes me sad and Im sorry for you. I was going to end my review right here but let me add a little piece of information for you; this animation film is based on a cartoon strip (if you didn't know that then I think, well, you know what I think) that kids love yet you can find in it content about constant smoking, magic mushrooms, suicide, ghosts and murder. Just saying. Ha! My rating: 8.5/10.

We really do have good cinema here in Quebec. I watched maybe 10 Quebec movies in the last 6 months and only one of them I did not enjoy. This here is a great one. I'd pit this movie against any movie of the same genre from any director from any country and I would be proud of it. Hidden gem, instant classic, crime masterpiece. My rating: 8.5/10.

Chasse-Galerie (2016)

A great surprise!

I had no expectations about this one and had never heard of it before but it was effective, convincing and powerful stuff.

The first thing it does well is to display the hardship of the lumberjacks' lives in the cold of Quebec's winter. (There are many false clichés about us Canadians but yes, I am a descendant of lumberjacks as most of us Quebecers are.) The second thing it does best is creating characters, situations and dialogues that make the whole thing a true and resonant experience. Impressive work all around. I don't know what they saw to call it a horror movie though.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation (1997–1998)

I fell upon this and I was flabbergasted to see that I spent my whole life not knowing it existed. So I spent the whole afternoon watching this with my 2 1/2 year-old son. It was our first binge together. Watched the first six episodes the first day and we watched four others the next. There's 26 total. First of all, I disagree with people saying that this is bad. It may be designed for children but I also disagree that it can only entertain them because I had fun. Personally I found that it was of good quality and very entertaining. Well done Turtles! 8/10

Cold Fish (2010)

I recommend it, totally worth it!

I loved the atmosphere and the chemistry between the characters. That was some high- quality crime/thriller/horror. The story involves the typical ordinary man that turns from terrorized puppy to insane Psychopath. It's tense, very sexual, bloody and has a unique feel to it that forgives the lack of originality in its formula. Plus, Megumi Kagurazaka looks stunningly ravishing. Just wow. Also, Asian movies always have some great villains and this one was one of the best. I think it's a shame that the actor did not do any other good movies, or so it seems. Oh and honourable mention for one of the craziest chick in a movie ever! The villain's girl was SICK! I did not really expected/understood what happened in the final scene but all in all superb job from Sion Sono. Especially considering that this was inspired by true events. 8/10

American Hero (2015)

Hidden Gem

By the trailer, I thought this was gonna be a low budget superhero comedy/parody. By the rating(4.9), I thought it was gonna be idiotic but maybe funny. So I gave it a look on Netflix and I was surprised to find a well acted drama that struck a chord with me. It actually struck many chords and the characters felt scary real. Never would've I thought that I would have all these emotions watching this. It does not rely on special-effects or action at all and the comedy aspect is secondary. It's in it's tone, it's words, it's music. It's in it's heart that this movie stood out. I strongly recommend it and I'm going to buy it for sure.

Mr. Nobody (2009)

Past, present, future. The butterfly effect, the power of decision, the various existing dimensions. Love, life, death, space, slumber, fear, water, fire...this movies covered so many highly interesting subject with amazing fashion. The length of 2h30min was justified as there is a tremendous amount of sights and emotions to absorb in this masterpiece. Many aspects of this movie were mind-blowing, the story was unique, the cinematography was top notch and the acting was great. Good choice of music all the way too. The final scene left me with shivers and a huge smile on my face. Just like my favourite movie, Requiem For a Dream, I'll have the most people watch this as possible and I, myself, can't wait to revisit this gem. 10/10 (oh and BTW, by watching the Making of , one can witness the unbelievable effort that was put in many of the scenes. That increase the value for sure. )

Tokyo! (2008)

Really glad I watched it!

Tokyo!: Looking for a unique and memorable cinematic experience? Look no further. This triptych of 1h50 goes by so fast! The final scene comes somewhat too quick but leaves you with a lot talk about. Here's my ratings for the three shorts: Michel Gondry's Interior Design: charming interesting simple story with a punch line that will make you fall off your chair! 7/10 Leo Carax's Merde: Leo brought back his craziest character from the movie Holy Motors and this short had some dragging parts but was still better than the whole movie HM. 6/10 Finally, Bong Joon Ho's Shaking Tokyo is the best of the three. A peculiar but very captivating story about isolation and agoraphobia. 8/10

Gerry (2011)

Amazing singer, great music, good movie

I have to disagree with the previous critic mentioning this look like a chick flick. If anything, it's just sad that they amplified his portrait as a bad father/husband. A part from that, It was a pretty good rendition of the tragic life of this amazing singer. My main problem is the accent that the lead role chose. I heard Gerry on TV a few times and I don't feel that's the way he talked. The accent annoyed me pretty much all through the movie. The singing was highly credible though and I feel they gave tribute to his music better than the movie Dede did for Les colocs . All in all, the movie has more high than lows although it was maybe 20mins too long.

Nos jours heureux (2006)

What a refreshing surprise!

A genuine and often funny depiction of the relationships between monitors and children in a summer vacation camp. From romance to friendship, dancing to fighting, this French movie bring back good souvenirs of our childhood. It had been a while since I saw such a feel-good movie filled with sunshine and laughters. The characters were well defined and it does not take long before you get a good understanding of them. The dialogs were smooth but sharp, sweet but spicy. Truly a movie with heart and very well directed. Great job from all involved and props to all the young actors. It's was fun to see Omar Sy who was as good as always and there even was a guy from Quebec which is a plus for me. I strongly recommend it. 8.2/10

One Eight Seven (1997)

Great movie, what a ride!

Not only by the fact that this was a great movie but also by the fact that I somehow never heard of it for almost 20 years! I consider myself a movie collector and I love sam L Jackson and love gang related movies. (Blood in blood out, boysndahood...) When I saw this movie at the video club I bought it for eight bucks without even knowing what it was. What a surprise. My first impression was that the cinematography was beautiful and the acting was great. Then after a while I felt like it was a bit more concentrated on the teacher side of the story and not enough on the students whom were made to look like evil people who are bad 24 seven.Spoilers: Then the whole finger cutting scene and the Dead body found in the river scene came and I was like:' WoW!' For a bit there I thought that the white teacher would turn out to be the killer and I was like 'oh no don't bring me that twist, that's going to be disappointing' And they didn't! Superb movie! 8/10

The Collector (I) (2009)

Come on! This?? A good movie?

This is the worst note I've handed out since I started doing Reviews here. I didn't like this movie. Since I also bought The Collection, I gave it a shot and it was way better. At least there was some originality to it. I think it's unfair that the collection as a lower score on IMDb so that's why I give it a low 4. To bring it down you know! In The Collector, its Ridiculous how the guy Successfully hides behind a bed. Then a chair. Its ridiculous How once again a character successfully escapes the house and then comes back in it because he saw the little girl. Oh yes, he brought a gun... With no bullets!! Then how was the ambulance Without police protection?? Come on! If at least there was a particularly good story or originality to the movie maybe I would've liked it but its the same old boring activity of Watching a mute mad man slowly walking inside a house while everyone tries to escape from him.

No depth, no charm, don't waste your money and save Yourself some time and just buy the collection.

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)

Good thing I didn't rely on the bad critics.

Strippers. Guns. Booze.

Strippers with guns and booze. Chicks with swords. Poker. Decapitations. Self-mutilation.

Come on now people... What is there not to like!!?? No But seriously I think this was a pretty good Sequel. I gave 8.5 to the first one and I gave 8 to this one. Bruce Willis could've been left apart from the movie but all in all it was fun. Once again don't listen to the haters. Get this movie watch it and get off. Just like I got off of it. Now I don't have much else to say so good night everybody take care yourselves.

Unstoppable (2010)

OK, yes this movie Didn't waste time to get to the action, The thing is that the whole action from this movie could've been a 15 minutes scene from a good movie. I feel like the storyline didn't bring anything new to the table, there was no depth to the character and Dawson was not convincing at all in her role. I liked 90% of Denzel's movies. This is not one of them. Obviously the train finally stop but the story just drags on and on before they get to succeed and everybody clapped their hands in happiness. At one point I wished the train just crashed in a safe zone and that both Characters would die heroically or something . 5/10 for this boring movie.

Madea's Big Happy Family (2011)

Not bad at all!

I was never familiar with Perry's work. I started with Madeas witness protection and then I was pleasantly surprised so I watched another one which was Madeas big happy family. I have to admit I had very low expectations for this movie and I watched it at night before going to sleep thinking I would fall asleep on a normal regular movie but then the dialogue had me laughing and the story and the characters were just interesting enough for me to watch it until the very last minute. very enjoyable, I would recommend this movie for any couple who wants to have a light evening of fun. Obviously this is no masterpiece Nor a classic but people who give this movie a rating of one should have some sense slapped into them. Heller??? Okay I will admit the plot is often far-fetched but the characters are credible enough for me and there are some really funny moments. I also loved the approached the movie had with the topic of death. Touching, genuine, funny. I would give the witness protection movie a six out of 10 and this one seven out of 10 because I really don't agree with the low score on here.

I bought this movie in a three movie deal package. I owned the DVD for several months before I even considered 'losing' some time watching what this movie really was.

Oh what a surprise it was. I had no expectations at all... This movie surprised me very much. All along, I was looking at this movie without apprehensions... I was very surprised by this movie. I was not expecting the things I saw in this movie... I still remember that night I watched this movie, I had a lot of fun that night...and I found myself surprised. I give this film an eight, because it was great.

I think the general score of 6.4 of IMDb is pretty fair. I give it a 7 to boost the score a little but I'd give it a 6.5. I have a 4 months old baby boy and I watched this movie on a Saturday afternoon with my wife. We both enjoyed it. I read the critics here before so I had low expectations. I won't lie it helped. Nowhere near pineapple express but still not a bad comedy. Efron was good in his role and Rogen does some shrooms. A bit unrealistic though (my wife kept saying 'but where is the baby?' all through the movie). All in all, worth the 5 box I paid for it. Watching this movie is NOT a waste of time if you go in with no big apprehensions.

What a surprise was waiting for me when I started watching this movie on Netflix. Such a surprise that one week later I was buying the DVD just so I could put it in my collection alongside movies like Pawn Shop Chronicles, running scared, smoking aces, wolf of wall street and basketball diaries. I was not bored one minute through the 2 hours. I think I never saw Dwayne Johnson do a role as crazy as this one. I loved him. This movie is just plain good entertainment and very underrated. I give it a solid 8. Of course don't go expecting the overall quality of Wolf Of Wall street but I strongly suggest you jump on the first opportunity you get to watch this little wonder where everything goes WRONG!

5.4/10??? Come on IMDb! In a way I can understand because my friend didn't really like this movie. I LOVED IT! I bought it used at the corner videostore, never heard of it so my expectations were low not to say null. It's now in my top 5 of 2013 movies somewhere after Wolf of Wall Street. It's even in my top 50 best movies ever along with smoking aces and running scared. I loved the first part, loved even more the second, and my only negative point is Brendan Fraser, witch in my opinion kind of ruined the crazy vibe of this great movie. I am not an Elija Wood fan but he did a remarkable character in this film. I strongly suggest you watch this movie and make your own opinion. I don't want to spoil the movie so I won't say more but if like me your in love with this piece of art or have any questions you can let me know. I just enjoy talking about Pawn Shop Chronicles. 9/10 Not 5.4 tskk

Killing Them Softly (2012)

Disappointed...

Okay, this is not a bad movie, nor is it a good one. I think the general score of 6.2 is pretty spot on. I give it a 6 and I could've went lower. The dialogues are not entertaining to me. The ambiance and feel of the movie was disappointing and I didn't find anything new in the plot. Brad is in my top 5 actors and I enjoyed almost all movies with Liotta. My expectations were maybe too high when I watched this movie. I was hoping for a 8 or at least a 7. I just made a critic for The counselor (witch I gave 7) and I compared both movie. The counselor won hands down.

Watch it if you have the chance but I don't advise you pay any money for Killing Them Soflty. Even the title is better then the movie itself. Im done.

Time to boost the score a little

I give this movie a 7. Its a bit generous from me, I know, but its mainly because of the low score it actually has. (I'd like to excuse my french in advance im from Canada, Quebec).

I've recently watched Killing Them Softly and I have to say I was a bit disappointed as my expectations were high. I gave the movie a 6. I think The Counselor and Killing them Soflty are two movies that can be compared.

Now I read the critics before watching The counselor and my expectations were lower, and I have to say I do not agree with the bashing comments on this movie. Of course it's no Smoking Aces or no Running Scared, but not so far behind. I liked the general ambiance of the movie, contrary to Killing them Softly. Cameron was not as bad as some people claim. Fassbender showed great emotion and the rest of the cast was nothing less then acceptable. For some reason I loved the septic truck. All the scenes including it were disgustingly beautiful. Now for all the people who claimed there was no link between many scenes, I don't know what you people were on when you watched the movie. I was a little high (as always when I watch a movie) when I watched it and to my memory there is not one scene that doesn't have a purpose to the plot. Obviously I have small deceptions, per example, the first hour of the film would have needed at least one action scene. Unfortunately they had us waiting more then half of the movie before there's violence. ***SPOILER*** Another thing is that when Reiner died and the cat come close to him they make us think its gonna eat him. Thats not the problem. The problem is after you realize the cheetah just takes a sniff at his body before running away, I was expecting/hoping that the cat would find the guys who killed him and avenge his master. Maybe I have a bit too much imagination...

All in all, not a bad movie. Good dialogues (better then Killing them softly) good feel to the whole thing. I don't like the score showing here so I give it a 7/10
