Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Deb ruins everything.
It was nice to see Dexter back after all of these years. I enjoyed the premise of the show, but Deb was so far beyond obnoxious that the scenes with her were practically unwatchable. As in the original series, Deb is the worst character, but here, she's so one note and ridiculous that it seriously ruins a good portion of the show. Harrison was annoying, but at least there was some depth to his character. Michael C. Hall is, as always, charming, captivating, and makes the whole show.
Knives Out (2019)
What On Earth?
Why do people think this movie is so spectacular. It's grossly unfunny, slow, boring, badly written and not even well acted, despite the "star studded cast." Daniel Craig is so painful to listen to with that ridiculous accent and there was so much vomiting that I could barely watch at times. Christopher Plummer was the only good thing about this movie and he's in it for about 5 minutes. The "twist" ending was so predictable that we had it figured out in the first act. I love mysteries, Agatha Christie, and especially, country house murder stories. This was painful to sit through and insulting to the real murder mysteries it is very loosely inspired by. I did give three stars for the cinematography, as the filming locations and sets were beautifully done.
Stockholm, Pennsylvania (2015)
A little disappointing.
**SPOILERS ahead... ** This movie was well done, but not as captivating as I'd hoped it would be. The film mostly focused on Saoirse Ronan and Cynthia Nixon after the girl had been returned "home" to her family. The scenes featuring Jason Isaacs were, by far, the most interesting, but the movie showed very little of the girl's life before she returned "home." I would have liked to have seen more of life in the basement, vs life afterward, as the concept was interesting an Isaacs was brilliant, as he always is. The movie was very sad, but not for the reasons one would imagine. The mother was a complete monster and it was difficult to watch the mother daughter scenes as the movie progressed.
The Durrells (2016)
Lovely... Except for the Children
Like many of the other reviewers, I read the Durrell books as a kid and loved them. Keeley Hawes does an admirable job as the mother of a family of the most horrible, selfish, unpleasant children who are so unlikable that I almost didn't continue watching. I'm glad I finished series one because they do get a little bit less hideous, but it was disappointing, as I don't remember them being nearly as despicable in the books.
The secondary characters were, for the most part, fantastic. Spiro, Lugaretzia, Theo, the Countess, Dennis were wonderful characters and the character acting was reminiscent of old classic movies like My Man Godfrey or Young in Heart. Sven was another weak point for me though, his presence was almost like non-acting, he basically stood and looked blank for most of the series.
The worst part of the series, however, was the horrible Gerry. Watching that little monster take wild animals out of their own habitats and cage them in tiny cages with no enrichment was painful. I guess he did this in the books as well, although I don't remember it being so extreme, or maybe I imagined the cages to be a lot bigger. I was so disgusted by the imprisonment of these beautiful animals, it really put a damper on the entire series for me. Corfu and the house were, themselves, characters, and were the best part of the series for me. I also enjoyed seeing the animals in their natural habitats, that was lovely.
