Nimród Antal's latest 'A Viszkis' is a thorough character study, a suspenseful crime thriller and a heartbreaking social commentary
26 November 2017
'A Viszkis'/'The Whiskey Bandit' is a biographical crime-thriller written and directed by Nimród Antal and stars Bence Szalay as the notorious 1990s folk hero of Hungary, Attila Ambrus, who committed 27 bank and post office robberies from 1993 to 1999 until his eventual capture. The estimated amount of money stolen is more than 100 million HUF (approx. half a million USD) at the time.

Nimród, who I am a huge fan of after first seeing his acclaimed existential thriller ('Kontroll'), establishes the atmosphere of this immaculate thrill-ride right in the opening tracking shot of Ambrus committing one of his robberies after a shot at the local bar. What the director does so well is achieving a rather heartfelt childhood backstory to this character thus providing a deeper understanding of the Robber's motive. He was an outcast, an underdog. Then he became an antihero. We could interpret this film in a way as a coming-of-age drama, or a deeply affecting tragedy, but eventually it is a highly compelling true story.

On one hand 'A Viszkis' is a thorough character study, a suspenseful crime thriller and a heartbreaking social commentary. For one, Bence Szalay's fully embodied central performance and screen presence is undeniable. The gripping robbery scenes, the well-choreographed action sequences and the aggressive, cynical humor might just very well please the popcorn audience, while the conventional non-linear narrative actually serves a thoughtful purpose of navigating between good and evil. Moreover the production design is pleasantly convincing, the visual effects are top-notch and the mesmerizing cinematography elevates the film from its true crime counterparts. (There is no denying of how gorgeously this film is shot, I can tell you.) Operating with clichés like raised in a broken home, immigration to an other country without papers OR money and telling a non-linear narrative after the capture could have come out terribly wrong in the context of the film. Nonetheless Nimród accomplishes the same sort of sympathy for the Robber as was (and has been) felt by many Hungarians back then, still he never indulges in glorifying his deeds. The popularity of this individual in the public eye is derived from the fact that many had financial difficulties after the fall of the communist block. The Robber was a symbol of daring to spit capitalism and the banking System in the face.

However Nimród has never been as much of a compelling writer as an outstanding director when it comes to storytelling. Despite achieving terrific visually aesthetic heights, the second half of the story drags a little leading to certain side characters' motivations not making much sense - meaning the character development of the detective and the love interest. By no means does the film become boring. There is a certain amount of investment in the protagonist established in the first half. On the other hand the second half loses some steam down the road despite its spectacular action sequences. For example in one particular scene the actual motivation of the Whisky Robber is explained to us which could have been cut out entirely since the film has already made that clear minutes ago. I believe some scenes could have been easily cut out to tighten the structure. But maybe I am just nitpicking.

In the end 'A Viszkis' is a masterpiece of a film. Flawed? Yes. But still an unforgettable cinematic experience owing to the fact that the filmmaking elevates the source material with exceptional energy, stunning action, confident and passionate direction and a powerhouse central performance.

The Revenant (I) (2015)
10/10
A Western Odyssey or (How Leo Learned To Stop Worrying And Love His Oscar)
22 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Odyssey in literature equals to the calvary of homecoming. Odyssey means fulfillment either by knowledge, sacrifice or mercy. There are great examples of fulfillment by knowledge in 2001: A Space Odyssey as well as we can find heroic sacrifice and redemption by vengeance in Gladiator, however in Homer's Odyssey the latter fulfillment is achieved by justice and mercy.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant takes a great courage from the real life Odysseus' trials and tribulations based on the novel of the same name. Needless to say, Iñárritu reaches higher than the novel by envisioning a cinematically unique and unsettlingly fulfilling experience alongside with the exceptional imagination of cinematographer Emmanuel 'Chivo' Lubezki and a huge amount of excellent performances from a most talented cast.

From the characters, there are three prominently mentionable. Domhnall Gleeson is brilliantly temperate in order for the two main characters to deepen their opposition with each other. Tom Hardy serves as the picture's main antagonist with whom Leonardo DiCaprio's Hugh Glass is forced to confront followed by a tragic decision in the part of Hardy who kills Glass' half-blood Indian son while his father is watching the act impotently lying wounded by a previous attack of a bear. This great inner and outer duel of the two is slowly but constantly reaching its peak as Hardy's Fitzgerald learns to deal with his deed, while Leo's Glass learns a much greater deal.

Hugh Glass does not only seek revenge. He seeks justice. Frontier justice. Glass learns to survive in the wild as was he viciously left for dead and devastated. He is forced to flee from the past and the wild in order to fulfill his destiny in killing Fitzgerald. Such an unprecedented Odyssey we can experience as Glass learns mercy on his journey as well as sacrifice and justice! Leonardo DiCaprio solidly delivers his greatest and most memorable performance in his career. He captures and evolves on every aspect of his character which is absolutely Oscar-worthy.

The scenery is marvelous. The costume design is most convincing. The makeup artists did an amazing job. The editing and mixing are no less award-worthy than the beautiful visuals and the masterful vision of Chivo. The long takes are breathtakingly intense from start to finish, from the opening Indian attack sequence that leaves us uncertain who to root for, through to a naturalist and unbelievably convincing depiction of the bear attack, to the brutally mesmerizing and well- executed final confrontation between Fitzgerald and Glass. These two actors both deserve their praise for their most committed performances as they make us believe that on the screen it is not Hardy and Leo fighting, but two hopeless, barbaric, opposing elements who learn to rise and fall in the wild.

All those thought-provoking visual and external oppositions claim for re-watching owing to the film's splendid screenplay in which the conflicts (American-Indian; Fitzgerald-Glass; conflict of elements) are so layered that from the first viewing one may not be able to fully process what they might have just experienced.

Flawless masterpiece: One of Tarantino's finest
20 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Starting off the review I must confess that despite my being a huge Tarantino fan, I do not agree with him in certain decisions on his films therefore I will not praise them as much as usual fans would do - not realizing the movies' mistakes or flaws.

However what he did with The Hateful Eight was a flawless work of art. Tarantino did not only stood up after the failure of his script's leaking out by going back to the project and making it anyways, but he also managed to find a more interesting and narratively more of a Tarantinoesque format by rewriting his former screenplay.

The Hateful Eight boasts with masterful acting from Kurt Russell to Samuel L. Jackson to Walton Goggins to Jennifer Jason Leigh. The cast did an excellent job as promised. The magnificent Ultra Panavision 70 mm looks mesmerizing as promised. Our beloved Author did a masterful job as promised. The sets and costumes are capture and most memorable. The humor is flawless as promised. Tarantino is cheekier and more vicious than ever.

Tarantino deepened the bond between the characters of Kurt Russell and Samuel L Jackson as well as we can have a more elaborate look into the head of Walton Gogings' character and his decisions. The Lincoln Letter has a much bigger role in the way of things. The poisoned coffee part now has narration and flashback, but so does the final act. Daisy Domergue's real, humanly side is revealed as well as a touching, but eventually comic moment with his younger brother. Finally, the Channing Tatum storyline was unpleasing for the Gang, but satisfying for the viewer as we can see in the midst of Act III a more elaborate hostage conflict than in the previous story - just as much pleasing to the mind as bloodbath is pleasing to the eyes.

On the other hand, the reason why I am giving this gorgeous film 9 stars is because I have doubts on the rewatchability of this piece and on its quotability - which are considerable aspects in rating Tarantino movies. As time is passing and I decide to watch and re- watch it again, I may reconsider my rating.

I must however recommend The Hateful Eight to you as a memorable piece of cinema with intense action, cheeky humor and elaborate characters.

Rick and Morty: The Wedding Squanchers (2015)
Season 2, Episode 10
10/10
Epic feel-bad finale to Season 2 of Rick and Morty reaches beyond the limits of sitcoms
5 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
In the conclusion of Season 2, The Sanchez family is invited to the (mate-melding) wedding of Bird Person and Tammy (Summer's friend who fell in love with Bird Person in Get Schwifty), but Rick seems to be concerned with the inevitability of the confrontation of the institution of marriage as his friend is about to get married. Arriving the wedding, The Sanchez family is surrounded by menacing shadows from the past and an ominous outcome to the ceremony is to come.

However the expectations were high, have I never imagined that such a finale is possible to achieve in a sitcom. This well-crafted episode belies many other live-action TV shows with hilarious running gags, memorable characters, layered and well-written, conclusive dramatic structure, moreover with its spectacular, self- indulging, honest and sincere charm hidden amongst improvised jokes.

Rick and Morty is back on track and the viewers should be prepared to be lost in this charming, heart-felt, not as funny as dramatically heart-breaking season finale of this original, layered, well- developed series we all want to go on watching and loving for years to come. Well played, guys! Well played!

Scream Queens: Chainsaw (2015)
Season 1, Episode 3
8/10
Alibuddies: cocaine or dildo or Texas Chainsaw
4 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Unbelievable it is that this show continues to surprise its audience with such a layered, self-indulging humor, edgy jokes and well- written characters.

As the gory story-line approaches one direction, the writers start to head to an other direction, then to an other, completely different one making it impossible to predict any twist, while the tension between two jokes holds us suspended.

The characters are consciously poorly-written, suspiciously acting, stalking, brutal, mean and cruel, silly and hilarious. My favorites are the layered character of Chanel, this foul-mouthed, black security guard, the man-whore jock who happens to be a huge Backstreet Boys fan while being plain stupid, this stalking, overly protective father who wants to be close to his daughter and act as a teacher and the almighty scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis whose scenes are never enough to fulfill our desires.

Bloody massacre is predicted to happen and hilarious metaphors will fall on us consisting chainsaws and vaginas, moreover a non- conclusive cliffhanger is likely to happen. Absolutely extravagant.

Rick and Morty: Look Who's Purging Now (2015)
Season 2, Episode 9
9/10
A sharply-written, hilarious comeback of Rick and Morty
28 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Following a disappointing episode, Rick and Morty has lost its excellence by such a misfire that Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate was.

However we have been compensated by this bloody vicious satire on civilization that spoofs the Purge films and raises such questions as the glorification of violence and gore just as much as our evil inside.

Look Who's Purging Now brings back that well-received violently grotesque tone to the season that had made it so memorable on such great levels. Utterly funny, well-written, layered in characters, fast- paced and vicious. That's what I like about it.

Only one episode left in the season. Writers, keep shining!

Scream Queens: Hell Week (2015)
Season 1, Episode 2
8/10
... And the ride continues its track straight to hell
23 September 2015
After watching the pilot, I started to develop interest in this new formula of slasher comedy on television.

The problem with all modern series today is that however awesome its pilot is, the second episode never manages to seize the charm of the pilot (No, not even Breaking Bad did it). The key to it is to maintain the pilot's quality and make the formula evolve, if possible.

Oh, boy, Scream Queens did it! This bloody entertaining slasher comedy did not only sustained the atmosphere, progressed the story, added and layered characters, but also mockingly exploited its source material by being as cheeky and as humanly silly as possible. Apparently by ripping off mostly the Scream Cinematic Franchise and partially other bad teen slashers.

I can only recommend this series to those who enjoyed the pilot and got into the atmosphere the show-runners created. And for you, guys, I can guarantee it's gonna be an awesome ride till the season finale.

Scream Queens: Pilot (2015)
Season 1, Episode 1
8/10
An admittedly silly but bloody refreshing, fun start for a horror comedy on television
23 September 2015
Being a huge fan of comedies poking fun of the genre clichés of horror (no, not the Scary Movie franchise, but Evil Dead 2 and The Cabin in the Woods), I had relatively high expectations of Scream Queens.

However the morbid humor, the ensemble cast and the consciously hilarious cliché twists of this pilot grabbed my attention right in the start with its over-the-top storytelling. Its extravagantly juvenile character development is so well-approached in writing that it succeeds to amaze me and invest in these characters. Scream Queens seizes the formula of enjoyable, silly TV programming, moreover makes the viewer want more of it as the narrative progresses.

The pilot to Scream Queens knows what it is and remains frank to itself by exploiting its predecessors and by never wanting to be more. The show is a earthly hug for those fans of the horror genre who know exactly what to expect from a teen slasher flick.

Half-baked and UNFUNNY episode to a so far perfect season makes viewers disappointed
21 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Rick and Morty is one hell of a funny television program we all love watching. Its second season started perfectly by nailing such high notes with its hilariously written, brilliantly complex sense of humor that we expected. However this episode withers on its potentials with the concept of a sequel to Rixty Minutes by exploiting this brilliant idea of multi-universal weird TV programming. The jokes and running gags felt forced and pretentious compared to the previous season's refreshing, new direction with which Rixty Minutes came to be a fan favorite with its eccentric humor and memorable characters. In this episode Jerry wants to have his d*ck chopped off! Get your bloody sh*t together, show runners!
