Saltburn (2023)
Excellent unpleasant watch
Firstly I will say, and this may be the greatest praise I can give the film, is that I felt uneasy from minute one of this film. I just had a general sense of being a little unnerved, and that doesn't happen often. I watch a lot of horror and that is not what this is, but it gave me the same feeling of unease that I got when I watched the original Wicker Man many years ago. Nothing overly original, but done impeccably well that it feels just that. The acting is superb, the visuals and music, haunting, beautiful and delicious. Definitely some unusual scenes you'd prefer not to watch with your grandma in the room, but they do add to the general tone of the film. Part Talented Mr. Ripley, part Women in Love. All Saltburn.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Really disappointing
I was looking forward to this so much over the past year, and really looking forward to seeing it, so much so I wouldn't start it until I had all Christmas shopping out of the way and I would have no distractions of any kind. To say it's a disappointment is an understatement. The acting is very average, poor even. The dialog is terrible and wooden. You know what the character is going to say nearly before they say it, and it's not anything witty or poignant. There is a scene early on that perfectly encapsulated the tone of the film. See through curtains, they are there look ok but pointless. I watch a lot of sci-fi and various movies and TV shows. But this is not at the standard you'd expect. Henry Cavill blurred out mustache CGI. Dull fight scenes, and utterly forgettable. (Edit:watched it twice just to be fair. It's actually worse than I thought. 3-4 out of 10 ⭐ max.
Saint X (2023)
Don't get why reviews are so bad.
A problem I have with a lot of shows , is that within an episode I have figured out the entire plot and ending. To the point it's barely any need to watch it. But I will admit I didn't see the end of this coming, I thought it was going to be something different, possibly the creepy dude that stole the underwear. So it was a pleasant surprise. Nothing being shoved down your throat ,no massive agenda. I though any use of culture and of repression and antiquated standpoints were well handled. Overall, it's not too long. The scenery is lovely. The acting isn't particularly bad, and the story is reasonable. Passed an evening and I don't regret watching it. Like I watched Shazam 2 , and I'll never get that time back.
Missing: Dead or Alive? (2023)
It's quite unfair on viewers
Netflix has cancelled some really good shows and not completed others, stating finances and time as the reasons. Mindhunter season 3 not made. Other shows cancelled mid story. Save the money instead of making shows like this. I can't fault the people in it. But staged true crime is so bad to watch. There is no crime. Everything is just so fake. Non actors faking emotions over something that didn't actually happen is cringey. Netflix needs to stop churning out 3 or 4 new shows a week that are awful, and focus on quality not quantity. Subscription prices went up, and seeing this drivel makes you feel robbed.
Alaskan Killer Bigfoot (2021)
Hilarious
You know those films that are so bad they are good? Well this is pretty much the same. The script is so bad and there obviously isn't supposed to be a script but there is, and these guys have clearly never acted a day in their lives, Which makes it even better. So wooden and monotone. It's a great advert for Alaska though. Its undeniably beautiful. But seriously it is just fun to watch. It's like a car crash you have to look. I really hope they do a second season or send these guys off in search of Bigfoot all over the world. It's just plain funny. Maybe not intentionally but cmon it's fun. Hope one of them gets ripped in half in season 2.
American Horror Story: Something's Coming (2022)
Probably the worst AHS to date.
That includes Roanoke which was barely watchable. Easily one of the worst series to date. The writers and producers have moved on to doing a lot of other stuff. And you can tell this is just phoned in. I actually can't think of one thing that was good about it. You genuinely don't care if the entire cast is killed off. The series regulars are fine. But without the others have nobody to bounce off. It's definitely ran it's course as a show. Probably best to forget the past few seasons. And just end it with one maybe 2 2hr longs closing chapters featuring some of the best characters and now out.
Jeepers Creepers: Reborn (2022)
Would give zero if possible
Hands down one of these worst things ever made. Really best to just forget about it. Genuinely no idea who would put their name to this. It's beyond bad. Acting is awful. Script awful. SFX my word, you get better SFX on phones these days. Feels like it was shot out the back of someone's house with an old flip phone from the early 00s.
And they just made up the lines as they went along. I know people say don't waste your time. But seriously one of the worst things you could ever watch. The don't even use the song Jeepers creepers. The creeper Is immortal. Nope it is well and truly dead after the past 3 and 3/4 films. This takes the cake for worst by a mile.
Black Bird (2022)
Paul W Hauser steals the show
Have to admit I avoided knowing anything about this series before viewing. I just had been told it was worth a watch. So I put it off for a while and binged in a day.
Well what a treat it was , the acting was excellent , especially PWH , his creepy softly spoken portrayal was so engaging. He made your skin crawl. That's the best compliment I can give. TE also gives a good performance and Ray Liotta was excellent in one of his final roles. I love the fact it's not a who-dun-it , because it's a real story (based on) but it's a why-dun-it or how often -dun-it. Absolutely worth a watch. Fits so much into 6 episodes.
Lou (2022)
Unbelievably predictable and at times unwatchable
Genuinely hard to watch. Not for reasons like, oh that's rough to see. But more like this is an absolute slog. It is dull, boring, poorly written and acted. And you can't help but feel ,why not give the money this cost to the homeless. It's just poor. 20 mins generously is all needs watched. Start, fly to the middle, then the end.
Within a short space of time starting watching this film, you will no doubt have worked out the entire plot, "twist" and what action, and I use the term loosely. Will happen. The most redeeming feature and why it gets a 2 star rating is the dog seems like a quality actor. Unbelievable.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: Superhuman Law (2022)
30 minutes long ?
30min long episodes. And 8 and a half minutes spent on flashback and credits. You are just waiting for the credits to start rolling. Never gets a chance to get going like a lot of the shows on Disney+. Netflix did it right with Daredevil 18 episode season and each one 45mins to an hour. If She Hulk keeps going at this rate , they will have about and hour and a half of screen time over the whole season.
Derry Girls: The Agreement (2022)
Excellent way to end
Derry was a huge part of my life growing up, and this is all the emotions of that time.
The acting was fantastic by all.
Siobhan McSweeney as ever the legend.
Raw,funny,kind, heartbreaking.
Maith thú Lisa
Maith thú all.
Choose or Die (2022)
Why not be English.
Clearly filmed in London, with a primary English cast. Why not just be an English horror. Zero need for it to be "American". This is actually so distracting. A good English "f*#k could half some of the dialogue and make room for a better film over distorted screaming.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Feeding of its predecessors success
Like AHS I fully understand thats each story is a new one on its own merit. However where AHS has often but not always delivered ,(some shockers and not of the scare variety) the haunting of... let's say franchise is poor. The first was a little fun but truth be told fairly poor all round. And the new variation is worse. The acting is atrocious, and it would be a disservice to day time soap opera's to say the acting was that wooden. It was much worse. I can enjoy bad acting and even some hokie stories if there is humour and self awareness that it is bad.
The first instalment really got its traction from word of mouth, like OMG did you see the haunting of Hill House its soooo scary. Hearing that of a person in there mud 40s is more disturbing , but you indulge to habe something to talk about at work. This really hasn't generated the same eyerolling OMG's .
I cant see there being a third installment.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Why do people feel the need to explain this
I've seen many reviews 'explaining' the movie to others. There really is no need, it's not smart or high brow, or for the intellectual. Its basic, its predictable and worse it's not good, interesting, or enjoyable. Some people will claim it is a masterpiece, and those same people will claim a blank canvas is a reflection of the soul. Tripe.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels: Santa Muerte (2020)
See where it goes but not Penny dreadful
Firstly as much as Americans like to claim things as theirs, the Penny Dreadful was an English small printed book sold for a Penny. Such as Spring Heeled Jack etc. As for this new show, I see that it is its own show with the Penny Dreadful attached to it. The only problem being its very dull, there is very little to enjoy. Religion, WWII and racism. You could argue that was somewhat the theme of most 19th century horror literature, but this feel it is all a bit forced.
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez (2020)
One word
Heartbreaking. I felt angry, physically Ill and incredible sadness for the children of the world.
I Am Not Okay with This (2020)
Hmmm too short
There are short series of 10 episodes. But 7 at 20 minutes. I didnt think it possible but it's too short. I don't think I'd care to wait for a season 2. I'd probably have forgotten all about this by the time it arrived. The music is great though so if nothing else a good playlist for 2 hours.
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet: A Dark Quiet Death (2020)
Quality
This episode is easily better than a lot of films that I have seen in the past that have attempted something similar. everything is perfect from acting, cast, story. And they fit it into 35 minutes.
Parks and Recreation: The Fight (2011)
Everything perect
What a brilliant episode genuinely hilarious in places. One of the rewatch over and over episodes
Supernatural: Baby (2015)
Genuinely nothing negative to say about this.
Nevermind supernatural if any TV show had more episodes like this that had everything tv would be much better for it. Laying in hospital at Christmas time bummed out and watched this for the first time and actually laughed out loud on a few occasions.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Star wars ? Just good!
Best I've seen in ages. Makes you feel good . Good story. There is some sort of baby yoda makes you smile. It's a winner. If like myself you are a 40 year old you watched westerns. This is a western
Jeepers Creepers (2001)
2 part review.
The first 15-20 mins of this film are quality horror done so well. Dropping the body down the pipe the menacing figure and mystery driver all tip top stuff. Then it gets ridiculous they pull it off well with a crazy story . If they just had some mad man stalking them for seeing his secret and it panned out the same ending. Then it would have been excellent. Unfortunately like some other films it went a direction of .....really . Is it over yet I'm bored now. 5/10 . 5 for the first 20 mins. 0 for the rest.
Batwoman (2019)
At least Adam West played to the Audience
PC nonsense a good show does not make. DC has been going downhill for years now. Just when the Flash every episode is like a Cosby show special just missing the "awwww" spins effect and the obvious. And I didn't think anything could top how bad legends of tomorrow had gotten. I was clearly wrong Batwoman makers. Awful awful stuff. I gave it a go but cant waste another second on this and I'll watch any old rubbish at times
Brightburn (2019)
7.5 good horror decent
Only giving it a 7.5 because 85% of the film is the superman origin story so cant really rate it on that. But the horror elements are terrific. Honestly a sequel of him just going ape would be probably brilliant
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)
Horrible to watch
I felt for the actors this level of real acting eats you alive. Bundy was a monster to play him I dont know how a man can do it. You could see the pain in Effrons face but he did a great job. Thank God didnt go full tilt into the crimes families have seen enough
