Sky High (2005)
Very interesting, I call this the sleeper as well.
Oh snap, it's just another Disney movie. Ha, that's what I said at first. Oh boy, it's a movie about a school of to be super heroes and sidekicks, and look at the clichés coming in.
It's all comes out reversed, this movie take the clichés and actually makes good use of them, maybe even making fun of them. This is like the Disney I used to know, this movie is for all ages.
Now what are the negatives? Just a few surprisingly. The pacing was pretty fast, and so was the character development, maybe adding 30 minutes to the run time would've solved this.
Overall a pretty good movie, I recommend this to anyone who comes across it if they get bored.
When a Stranger Calls (2006)
Not bad, but not really great either....
When a Stranger Calls, it was a 1979 classic horror movie. Now a remake was made, can it live to it's expectations? Well, that's one problem. This movie passes as a sequel and a movie, but unfortunately not as a true remake of the 1979 classic. The biggest problem, and I'm sure almost everyone knows this one, is that the previews and trailers practically spoil the whole movie. So for those who never watched the classic, you really don't have to watch the movie because of all those previews. The worst thing the previews spoiled was when the officer revealed that the stranger was inside the house. That took away any suspense it had in the beginning of the movie. Plus after watching those previews, you don't have to guess what happens next. The next big problem was the elements to a horror movie. Horror movies and what it takes to scare people are obviously different nowadays, they should've worked more on the suspense, and the actual horror. Unfortunately there won't be a lot of things that are "scary", and not a lot to even make you flinch. The acting is okay, and the music in the background was good. The filming was good, and basically the other stuff were okay. I liked how, even though this wasn't the best movie, had those afterthoughts like the Ring. What if you were alone in your house and a stranger calls? ... Lol. Overall, this movie was not bad... but not that great either. This movie is either a rent or if you have a Stars' channel, find it and watch it from there.
High School Musical 2 (2007)
High School Musical 2.
So we have the sequel of the highly hyped High School Musical. Though that movie was not perfect, it attracted the kid and teen audience. Anyways, on to review High School Musical 2, and I'll try to stay brief. So the plot is basically about getting Summer jobs. I see improvement there, way better than the first movie. But since the plot is not the main issue, I'm moving on. The music went down quite a bit. The opener was not impressive at all, but not as bad as "Getcha Head in the game" from the first movie. The other songs were just... song IMO. The acting was a bit better, in terms of raw acting that is. There were still some cheesy moments and weird script moments, but it's a bit better than the first movie. One thing that hurts the overall acting though is character development. The character development was very... strange. Sharpay suddenly likes Troy, Chad comes back like the first movie never happened, and overall very strange how the characters act in the movie. But I take that over how they were from High School Musical 1. Overall this movie from the last remained... unchanged. There were some up and downs from the first movie. But in terms of learning from mistakes, it being a sequel, and different expectation from the first movie... This movie is a tad worse. But what were some saving graces in this movie? Ashley Tisdale again, and Miley Cyrus. Oh well, there may be a High School Musical 3, and hopefully it's learns from all mistakes. And Ashley, if you're reading this, if you're not in HSM 3, I ain't watching it.
Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board (2007)
Johnny's back, and the sequel's not bad...
Johnny Tsunami was, surprisingly not bad at all. I acknowledge it as one of the better Disney Channel movie like High School Music (Yes I was harsher on my critics, but hey, it was more hyped and I had higher expectations). Johnny comes back to Hawaii for his grandfather's wedding. His grandfather, a widower, is getting married to a widow. Does the widow had kids you ask? Yes she does, a 12 year old son named Chris... making that Johnny's uncle. Chris wants to be in a group named the Dirt Devils, they kind of resemble the group back from Johnny Tsunami... or to a bigger extent, that one group from Brink. Not to mention that Chris is in denial with the marriage. That's basically how the plot goes (yeah, I'm not good at explaining stories without spoiling). Alright, on the the pros and cons... pros first. The biggest improvement between this and the prequel is the acting. Even being rated G and a Disney Channel movie, the acting isn't bad at all. I was able to watch the whole movie without thinking, "oh wow that scene or phrase was terrible." If you watched the prequel, you'll watch this with relief. Now the cons... unfortunately there are a bit more cons (though all are at a lesser extent). One is the new character Chris. Chris is some emo wannabe, and a very hated character in my opinion. You'll see, even in the end. Another con is the weak plot. The prequel had a simple story as well, but the plot in this movie is very limited. Your grandfather's getting married, you solve a kid's problems, and you meet (another) girl. The story tries to twist the elements around... And probably the biggest problem is Johnny comes back to Hawaii to see his new family... so what? There's almost no connection to the prequel whatsoever. And if you make a sequel to this movie, the plot except the fact that Grandpa Johnny got remarried would be nonexistent. Also one last thing is Val and Johnny. What happened to Emily? Then again, he never says anything about Val or Emily being his actual girlfriend. Well this is all I could say. This movie isn't bad, but it's just the weak plot that ruins it. But don't worry, it's watchable.
High School Musical (2006)
My non-biased review...
Warning: My review has some spoilers. So this is high school musical... What a let-down. That's okay, Disney started to suck after making some DCOM's, and they kept going. Stuck in the Suburbs, True Confessions, Cheetah girls... what kind of movies are those? The acting started slipping dramatically, and the plots get monster killed. High School Music is almost the same. We have Zac Efron and a promising cast. But it had weak plot, weak acting. I'd choose this over any DCOM or even show that was released last year and this year, but I can't recommend it as movie you have to see.
In real life, if you are truly motivated to being an athlete... I don't think Troy would, at the last second, suddenly think about singing. Music is a good thing, I'm a musician myself... but to suddenly "discover" yourself from karaoke. That's not realistic at all. Aside from the weak plot, it suffers from very weak acting. It's completely unrealistic, and it just fails for trying to add some comedy elements. I did not like the music in this movie. Mostly because Vanessa's voice sounds very synthesized.
But of course, there are some positives in this movie. Choreography was pretty good. Ashley Tisdale, was the saving grace for this movie. Very played a very interesting character (Sharpay). This will entertain kids to preteens. This movie is still watchable, and it's certainly not the worst movie ever. But don't expect much, it's a Disney movie and they tried to make it simple.
The Lion King (1994)
One of Disney's best movies...even now.
And so we are in Pride Rock. The Lion King Mufasa and Queen Serabi have a child, which they name Simba. It all seems peaceful... but not to Scar, Mufasa's brother. Scar is obviously jealous of Mufasa for being King, so Scar plans to steal the throne. A tragedy happens and Simba runs away... Simba is then found by Timon and Pumba, a spectacular duo. Simba lives with them for awhile, until Rafiki comes in and helps Simba regain the true identity of who he really is. The story is well developed, and it's enjoyable for the whole family. The movie has an interesting soundtrack with an African twist. The voice acting was done well with all the characters. The animation was well done, but then again, this was a theatrical movie and it was still considered the old Disney. In other words... this is The greatest Disney movie of all time.
The Pebble and the Penguin (1995)
Take some things off, tweak it, and it would've been okay...
Yeah I was a kid when this movie was out...at that time I thought it was good. Obviously now I'm older, but I decided to re-watch this movie due to complete boredom. This movie is obviously a kid's movie, and of course the adult interest is 0.1%. Was the plot good? Not really. it's about a penguin named Hubie who wants to marry another penguin named Marina, and it's explained before the movie about the pebble thing. Hubie finally makes contact with Marina, and Marina actually likes Hubie. Later Hubie wants a pebble to marry Marina, so he wishes for the best pebble, and he got what he wanted. This could've ended here, but then Drake, the stupid antagonist, decided he should separate Marina and Hubie to make the most pointless journey ever. But that's all I could tell you for the story. The animation is okay, the only problem is that overdid it with the gender thing. The singing has got to go, this literally made my ears bleed. But what can I say? this is a kid's movie! This is a good movie for kid's, not the whole family... especially not at this time period where pop culture evolved.
