Mission: Impossible: The Bunker: Part 1 (1969)
Quintessential episode
I didn't like the fact that the tape sequence was from stock footage and don't get why.....
The plot too implausible especially the mask scenes. Why should Cinnamon wear two masks? Maybe because they should fit on her face by the specialist Roland - ok there is an answer.... But many times in order to create a mask they first create a matrix from the person's face.
However, sometimes, somehow they can construct a mask without a reference. Even with the reference photo they had, that would be impossible....
(But you will respond ,my friend that is why the mission is not ,, dangerous,, as the Greek translation suggests but Impossible, so you ask too much..... )
An other part of the story that is too extreme is the flying saucer gadget. Couldn't they just provide the injection through his ,, wife,,? Or otherwise?
An other extreme element of the plot is the precise timing. All happens as it has been considered before. Ventlos hit Roland and impersonated him, at least he took reference from his face. How can Roland recovers the exact moment the bunker is about to explode and reunites with his team? If he hadn't recover they wouldn't be able to find him....
And how do they know how much time is left to evacuate the bunker?
I will stop taking a dig at the series. Apart from the flaws and the stretched plots is very good otherwise I wouldn't watch it...
The most impossible is this episode is not the mission but the face of Lee Meriwether...
And I will mention the use of the clock in close ups. It enhances the suspense and the viewer's agony. Besides that is the point. To cause agony to the viewer as much as you can. There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation, as the master Hitchcock used to say.....
Zorro: The Wizard (1990)
The meeting of the peaks
I think all the fans know about the meeting of Dr Wayne, Adam West, with Zorro of the 90s.
A drifting inventor was given the mission to trap Zorro but after his failure was taken to Zorro's hideout.
Wayne is impressed by his laboratory and Zorro declares he has great respect for scientific endeavour as long as it is used for progress and not suppression...
In the wrong hands can wreak havoc......
So this is the only time that Batman and his model, Zorro were met somehow.....
Mission: Impossible: Encore (1971)
Stretched but still great...
What a coincidence! I read today is William Shatner's birthday! And I came across him in Encore, one of my ,,best of,, episode list - I intend to watch all of them of course one day-
Moreover I read he has participated in one more episode. And by luck I hit on one episode on IMDb and I found it.... Too weird....
This episode has very good elements although it is once again too stretched in plot. The success of the mission leans on coincidence and the ,,bad guy's'' choices. I don't think I would trust an unknown barber to shave me with a straight razor especially if I was un renowned gangster, for instance.....
There could be several mistakes in their depiction of the thirties couldn't have predicted everything. The episode could have ended with the gangsters confession about the bombing of the witness...... And how come they hadn't search for the corpse in the wall back then? And how did Krol had rebuilt the wall ........
Anyway, the series is amazing. Just find an motivation to write in English........
Pyretos stin asfalto (1967)
Duty vs personal happiness
I longed for years to see this movie because it has a very favourite theme. The main protagonist is split between personal and common good. He and his fellow police officers scour the city in search of a vial of rare blood in order to save his wife who is going to be operated and about to deliver his child...
At lasts he finds the precious vial but before he gets to the hospital a psychopath is on the loose and steals a bus full of children......
Anyway, the movie is well made and successful if it is seen as a study of suspense or its purpose is to move the audience. It definitely has its good moments....
However, the movie is full of unjustified suspense and the plot is exaggerated. It can't be so difficult to find blood in a hospital, even O negative - only one vial was found and that was expired!- Only after the protagonist visits the last hospital, a doctor provides him with a list of blood donors. Instead of phone them, the protagonist looks for them by the police's car... When he gets into a tavern he hunts the donor, who happens to be a crook, instead of asking the people there for help! How can they all be so reckless?
Maybe the director wanted to highlight the indifference of the Greek state or just create agony to the viewer.....
Nightmare Alley (2021)
Thrilled
Maybe it is the only modern movie that can be compared to the classic film noirs. Although it includes other genres. For me it is a ''grotesque noir, according to 'grotesque spaghetti'. It is also a thriller, inevitably and has the special touch of other movies of the director. Obviously it belongs at the same universe as the Shape of the Water and Pan's Labyrinth. I am personally excited by this thought!
It is a great experience for noir lovers but also for the ones who never saw a movie of that kind. It has all the traits of the genre from the outcast protagonist with the dark and mysterious past to the dangerous femme fatale....
Showdown in Fort Henry (2019)
Well done
Very well done short film and I am surprised how come I am the only one who rated it... I am looking forward to watch your next endeavour...
Agries melisses (2019)
The best Greek series...
I am excited by this series. Great performances, suspense, cliffhanger episode endings, secrets and mystery. It includes everything a demanding viewer wants. It is also set in the Greek postwar era, so it appeals more to people obsessed with the past as myself... All characters even the minor ones are interesting and the protagonists have a back story that gradually unravels and adds more depth and dimension to each of them... Everyone has a reason for his actions. But those actions inevitably have consequences.... As time goes by, the viewer is very difficult to choose side. Even the more unlikeable characters become sometimes likeable. There are no ,good, and ,bad guys, as in real life. That gives more believability to the series.
I would like to praise all the cast and crew but that would take several pages... I will focus on Eleni, performed by Mrs Kitsou. Eleni is the symbol of the eternal greek woman, a woman with strong character, dynamism, and initiative.
Her appearance, reminds us of an ancient Caryatid. Her main antagonist, Doukas Sevastos, performed by Mr Kakouris, the land lord that covets her land for an upcoming industrial zone, is an imposing figure with a deep voice, an iconic character that reminds us gangster movies. He is an enforcer of murders performed by his henchman Meletis and his late son Sergios. He keeps secrets even from his sons and his adulterous wife Myrsini. The greatest secret of all, is the forgery of his father will, a secret with devastating consequences if ever revealed....
I will stop my review here. The characters are many, the story long, the plot twists endless... I could write a whole new book with that amazing series as a springboard. For me is something unprecedented, since I am a cinema lover and never before have I watched a series with so many episodes. That is the most important thing about the series. It can captivate assorted audience....
I want to congratulate the creators of the series for the gift they offered us.....
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
Captivating performances
Mr Tracey gives an unprecedented performance, he would be convincing even without makeup... Mrs Bergman is more enchanting than ever and I really missed not having seen one her best performances... The most beautiful woman ever shot on screen... I loved the cinematography, the glorious black and white and the practical effects.... Think it's underrated movie, still I have to see again the 30s version to compare them... Must also read the novel to check out if the adaptation is faithful enough... Anyway Victorian fantasy is one of my favourite genres....
Eteros ego (2016)
Amazing
One of the best greek movies of the recent years. Comparable to foreign movies of the same genre... I hope the director will make other equally great films...
The Majestic (2001)
Underrated...
How come this movie got only 6.6 average score? Saw it to the cinema back then and I considered it amazing. It touched me deeply and couldn't understand why a gem like this didnt win any Oscar or at list a nomination, while a beautiful mind was so much praised and awarded... By no means this movie is worst than the previous excellent Darabont' s films...
