Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
Wow. Excellent study of how some people become radicalized.
I grew up in SLC. Non-Mormon. That is what motivated me to watch this miniseries. But it provided a wider range of insights than just about the LDS church. A huge number of people around us are becoming radicalized. One step at a time. You see people who start out looking and acting like nice, ordinary, reasonable people that you cross paths with every day. By the end, you see them transform into irrational, manic extremists convinced that they have the "truth" and how everyone not themselves is out to get them and are evil. This show does an impressive job of telling a murder mystery and exposes suppressed history of the Mormon church. It is also applicable to the rising extremism around us in many countries. People who become convinced that others are evil and therefore deserve to have violence directed at them. This series shows how easy it is to manipulate people when they are taught to accept whatever their dear leader tells them. People lose themselves and end up in a dark hole. Very illuminating study of human nature. Extremely well done.
Lovecraft Country: I Am. (2020)
Why the negative reviews? Oh yeah, we all know why.
This show is amazing! This episode is powerful. The negative reviews are too small minded. This isn't the average scifi fantasy. It's impactful social commentary and thought provoking. I am more and more impressed with each episode. This isn't a show that you can sit passively back and be spoon fed. Maybe that's part of why some people have issues with it. That and the fact that it presents discomforting moments. Instead this is what I love best about scifi and fantasy. That it takes you out of the ordinary context to present ideas in an extraordinary way. It's a great journey if you give yourself over to it.
Supernatural: Prophet and Loss (2019)
They've turned Supernatural into a soap opera.
There were individual moments that were great, but the overall experience is a soap opera, even down to the style of camera shots. I am sad that Supernatural was cancelled. But honestly this episode is one of the reasons why it was cancelled. I love this show, but they have changed the feel of what this show is. It's like everyone was trying too hard in order to beef up their acting portfolio with emotional scene clips. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't our show anymore either. The vibe was off. It was tired and trying too hard to perk itself up.
Soul (2020)
Perfection
Beautiful. This is a movie that could be watched many times and pick up new references each time. Jon Batiste's music is magical. Wonderful on so many levels. I loved it.
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
Delightful family musical
I do not understand those negative reviews at all. This was a fun, sweet holiday musical aimed at kids but enjoyable for adults too. The music and dancing was top notch. The costumes and sets were eye candy. Such talent all the way around. I guess haters gotta hate, but don't let it deter you from watching. This was really a lot of fun to watch and it got better and better. I'm going to have to watch again because I want to learn the songs. Love it!
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
This should win best picture and director and lead actor and others. Brilliant.
I think other reviewers are correct that the racists are downvoting this movie, Which just proves the point that America (and the world) still has a lot of hateful deplorable people. This movie is brilliant on so many levels. It has funny moments while still managing to break your heart that we haven't grown past this stupidity yet. This is my favorite Spike Lee movie so far. Do yourself a favor and see this movie.
