Love Again (2023)
Very formula, but I loved it very much
Anyone could point out that this movie is a formula rom-com. Here I am, this older guy, absolutely loving it. I had not expectations of Celine Dion, but found myself utterly charmed by her character. There are so many movies that have a similar theme, and I generally find them lacking the quality of 'belief'. But I bought into these characters, this plot, and all the ancillary characters hook, line, and sinker. The way the plot comes together near the end is what really sold me. It would have been easy to simply brush off the deception and have them do the 'happy ever after' thing, but they cleared the deception in a grand manner. I've always been an Outlander fan, but now find myself more appreciative of Sam H. And his abilities as an actor.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
'Fun' is my criteria
I'm not looking for art. I'm not seeking Academy Award winning roles. I see run, and that is exactly what I got out of this movie. From start to finish, I appreciated both the present day story along with the reminiscing of yesteryear and all the fun I've had with Indiana Jones in the past. The characters of the past combined with some great new ones, introduced in this movie, really came together to provide a wonderful experience. The multiple chase scenes were well executed and provided an 'E' ticket ride for the audience. Who doesn't love great 'E' ticket ride! A great, and dare I say, fun culmination of the franchise.
Music Within (2007)
Eye and mind opener
Mr. Pimentel took many steps in the direction of helping people challenged with day to day tasks. We're all aware of wheelchair ramps, larger toilet stalls and wider, more convenient parking places for the handicapped. I was not as aware of the intolerance dealt with every day by the public. The ignorance shown by the waitress first encountered in the pancake house seems to be prevalent even today. Here in San Diego a man with a service dog was refused service not once but twice a a local McDonalds. "Please leave your dog outside" doesn't work for a sight-challenged gentleman, yet in two separate incidents that was the request. I say have these young people watch the movie to help open their eyes to the world around them they may choose not to see. Thank you for entertaining and teaching us in the same film. I hope this work receives recognition as the art it truly is and captures awards near and far.
Cinderella Man (2005)
Incredible
I've said I'm not a big fan of Russell Crowe. But then I loved this movie, as well as Master and Commander. I'm a fan. If you've ever visited the tenement museum in New York, you'll know the painstaking detail that was incorporated in this movie. Ron Howard crafted a masterpiece when he blended the colors, the feels, the emotions of the Depression and then wrapped everything in the warmth and humanity of Jim Braddock. Paul Giamatti adds to the texture with his performance as his manager. The family, headed by Mae AND Jim, reach out and pull at our hearts as they do little more than survive the worst of the Depression. So much more could be said about the actors and the direction of this movie, but better than words, get out and see it! It's disappointing box office is not-to-be-understood.
