Death of a Ghost Hunter (2007)
Good B horror movie!
Wow. I mentioned in an earlier post that as someone who watches so many horror films, it is known that none of them are genuinely scary. Well this one is. There are some cheesy parts, yeah, but the story is original and good. For a B movie, the acting is decent, the filming isn't bad. There are a few scenes in which the filming could be better, but there are plenty of movies that have that same problem, even big budget films. The only thing I have to complain about is the sound editing. One scene is really loud, the next really quiet. Usually this happens in movies with a lot of action, where it gets very loud during action scenes, but this one switches from quiet to loud in conversation scenes, which is really annoying. I literally closed my eyes at some of the ghost scenes. That is what surprised me. The images are decent and will stay with you. I don't know, I guess after watching so many horrible B movies I get really excited when a good one comes along. The story is told in a narrative form throughout most of it. It is documenting a ghost hunter, Carter, who is hired to check out a house that was the site of a family murder in 1982. The remaining family member is trying to prove that the house is haunted so they hire carter. She has to stay for 3 nights, almost sounds like the premise of house on haunted hill or 13 ghosts, but believe me it is anything but. Along with her, a video guy and a reporter (to write the story) are hired to stay with her, along with a member of the local church who wants to make sure that the original family's name isn't tarnished. There is activity in the house as the mystery of what happens unfold throughout the 3 nights ending in the death of the ghost hunter (hence the name) Carter. The film has an eerily true story feeling about it, like Blair Witch meets an American Haunting. It makes you want to look up the case, even though you know it isn't based on real events. There are a few good jumps, but the actual images are well done for the genre and budget. Available in your local video store July 8. WARNING: If you are extremely religious, don't watch this film. It will offend you.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Very disappointed
I really don't know if i should review this movie. So i will make it quick. Allow me to start with, I liked the first Spiderman. I DID NOT like the second one. The CGI was horrible. I do agree that the original Green Goblin looked like something from the POwer Rangers, but the first one was good. So tonight I went to the 12:01 a.m. showing with a friend who really wanted to see it.
We are returned to spidey(Toby Maguire) and his girl MJ (Kirsten Dunst, ick) and how wonderfully in love they are. Harry is still not happy with spidey/peter for killing his dad. MJ is performing on Broadway in a musical (with a not so good voice) and Spidey has become the savior of the city. It seems as though nothing could go wrong, but.... OUt of the blue, Harry decides he needs to seek revenge on spidey for the death of his father and becomes the New Green Goblin guy. A fight ensues, Spidey wins, knocks Harry unconscious, BAM he has forgotten the fact that Spidey stole his girlfriend (that he was too afraid to talk to in the first one, so I'm so on Harry's side here) and that he thinks spidey killed his father. All is well. The three are BFF. Enter Sandman/Flint Marko. Marko is an escaped felon with a sick daughter. The police inform spidey and aunt may that flint is the one who murdered uncle ben. This angers Spidey. Between all of this enter Gwen Stacy (played by a wonderful Bryce Dalas Howard) who is the daughter of the police chief and whom spidey saves and kisses (MJ gets mad). Throughout this some strange black goo hits earth from the sky, climbs to spidey and overcomes him. Flint Marko becomes sandman by some freak accident involving, guess this.....sand. Spidey becomes his own enemy and turns bad for a while, MJ and Spidey have some problems and topher grace is the only reason worht going to see this film as Eddie Brock.Cenom who is in love with Gwen. There are more corny lines in this movie than in all the national lampoon movies and American pie movies combined. The audience is supposed to be on spidermans side, especially when harry tries to steal MJ back, but really, what kind of friend steals his best friends girlfriend and keeps his identity a secret. I"m on Harry's side and i understand where topher grace's character is coming from. He gets called a fraud, but wtf is spidey, how does peter get pictures? I found this film ridiculous, in all honesty. THere are really stupid dance scenes. Corny one liners, the plot has too many villains and do not develop any of them enough for you to not want the to win. I know this will be the top grossing film of the year, which makes me sad. Because this film seems to have had no thought go into it, and some pretty rough acting by maguire and dunst. A movie for the kids, maybe.
Rated PG 13 for violence. 140 minutes.
300 (2006)
Amazing film
I do not care what anyone says. I waited over a year for this movie, and it was the first time that happened and it wasn't a disappointment (e.g. the two towers, the new world, zodiac...). I watch at least 10 movies a week (manager of video store) and teach film to college students (gotta have two jobs to be a college instructor) and this film blew me away. I liked the video game aspect, the slow motion action, it was different and done very well. I loved the gray coloring and the way red, gold and white stood out so well. I loved the plot, even though i know it is not historically accurate (which it was not supposed to be). I love everything about this movie. The acting was superb and i haven't seen a film this good in a very long time. Thank you Frank Miller, Zack Snyder and most of all Gerry Butler, for an amazing film experience. This will be the first film i see multiple times in the theater!!
The Hitchhiker (2007)
The story is believable, Awesome movie!!
Wow. I don't know if i was just in a mood or what but this movie scared the crap out of me. The tag line on the DVD cover is "you will never take your eyes off the screen" and it was correct. I was glued to the TV from beginning to end, tensing up, closing my eyes but still watching, I had to use the bathroom, but i refused to pause it. The plot is so real, that is why it scared me. The acting isn't bad, not for a B horror film, the cinematography could have been better, but i have seen much worse. The movie only runs 90 minutes, but i swear it seemed longer because i was enthralled in the story. It's your average hitchhiker story, except the hitchhiker, he's nice looking, you like him even though you know he's a bad person. I have never seen any of these actors and actresses before but I think they did a great job. I do not know why something like "The Hitcher" gets in theaters but something actually good, like this movie is thrown to DVD, other than the fact that it is extremely graphic and the teeny bloopers wouldn't be able to watch it. I really enjoyed this film and would recommend it to everyone. 4 out of 4.
The DVD is unrated, but there is scenes of rape, language, severe violence, sexual situations other than rape. 90 minutes
Edison (2005)
Very underrated film, great cast, great story
Who knew Justim Timberlake could act? I mean, people either love him or they hate him, i think he did a good job in Edison Force as a rookie reporter living in a corrupt town who stumbles on a story that can easily break the corruption. It's an interesting take on the police drama's of our days, it's not Departed thats for sure, but it's not bad. Look at the all-star cast, I mean you got Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman, LL Cool J, Dylan McDermot, Cary Elwes, Piper Perabo, and then the rookie himself, JT. It's definitely worth a look to all who like the good old' police drama's, with some truth in them. FOllow along with it and you will see much truth in the story it reveals.
