The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Disappointing!!!
This was like watching "Days of Our Lives" with some ghosts in it. It is not scary whatsoever but actually is more sad and depressing. Also, they overdid the "flashback storytelling" to the point that the plot progresses at a snails pace. Truly horrible and a massive waste of time.
Idle Hands (1999)
Extremely underrated Halloween movie
Great October flick in the tradition of Zombieland or Beetlejuice. Also, it's pretty much a late 90's time capsule with the likes of Seth Green, Devon Sawa, Jessica Alba and music from Rob Zombie and Offspring.
The Stepfather (1987)
Great movie..awful score
I loved the movie but I thought the musical background was like something from an Are You Afraid of the Dark episode
The Relic (1997)
Criminally underrated monster movie
Films can be great for different reasons. You don't have to be Oscar-worthy or artfully deep to be a great movie. If I'm watching a monster movie, I'm looking for a few things: Great creature effects, scary setting, good death sequences, memorable set pieces, a helping of Gore and pacing that keeps me riveted. Likable characters and a coherent plot are just bonuses (but not required) in this type of flick.
The Relic has all of these things in spades.
First off, that monster is up there with the Alien, The Thing, The Predator, Pumpkinhead etc. in originality and design. After all, the late, great Stan Winston came up with the look and concept and it shows. Check.
The dark, labyrinth of coal tunnels and museum corridors that the Gothoga creature stalks is amongst the most fertile for frightening set pieces in monster movie history. Period. The scenes where the cops and/Zoe museum patrons are navigating the clautrrophobic, pitch-black, sometimes water-filled tunnels are INTENSE and the presence of the relentless beast is felt throughout. Check...and check.
The murders and deaths are gruesome (bathroom scene, swat team scene, etc.) as (SPOILER) the Gothoga must feed on human brains to survive. Check.
From the initial murders leading up to the "big night," the pacing never lets up as Lietenant D'Gosta and Dr. Margo dig deeper into what's lurking under the museum. A sense of dread permeates the movie throughout and the plot keeps you interested. Check.
Finally, Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller headline a cast of above average characters that you actually care about (not always the case with monster movies).
Minus a slightly dated effects scene during the climax, this movie deserves a higher rating and is amongst the best "creature features" I can think of.
Highly recommended
