Formulaic, but entertaining
9 December 2023
This is a paint-by-numbers sitcom mega-episode, but it's an entertaining sequel nonetheless. The story is based on a muddle of fortunes between stereotypical class groups that often feels awkward, yet is sometimes unabashedly honest. It has many cringeworthy moments, and there are some genuine laughs too. Some characters are massively underwritten, but it really doesn't matter. Take it for what it is, which is light entertainment at its most enthusiastic, and much better than most of the crap the American studios are passing off as comedy these days. If only the Krampus guy (from The Counterfeiters) had more screen time!

Letting go
17 November 2021
The meaning isn't buried. It's right there on the surface for those who know how to find it. This is a solid, emotionally complex piece of work that must certainly have come from a very personal place only the writer/director can know. The rest of us, particularly those who have loved, lost and refused to let go, have our own version.

Tenet (2020)

Bombastic, but unexciting.
7 January 2021
I don't usually score a film so low, especially by a director whose work I greatly admire. Yet, Tenet is a disappointment. Full of bombast, but low on excitement, you spend most of the film's runtime trying to figure out what's going on based on largely inaudible dialogue. The few rewards you do get are fleeting. I wanted so much more from Tenet, a film I wanted to be wowed by on its first viewing, not on recommended repeat viewings. I won't be watching it again.
