Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art (2023)
Mesmerizing journey
Initially unfamiliar with the subculture depicted in the film, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself connecting with Scooter's art on a profound level. Coming from a background of more traditional paintings that resonate with my own experiences, I was intrigued by how Scooter's art spoke to individuals whose perspectives I hadn't previously engaged with. It offered me a glimpse into a realm where life is perceived through a different lens, expanding my understanding of creativity.
The documentary aslo raised intriguing questions about resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of art in the face of adversity.
Ethan's presence in the documentary added an intriguing layer to the narrative, blurring the lines between filmmaker and subject. Witnessing the dynamic interplay between artist and filmmaker, and the collaborative process that unfolded between them, underscored the profound connection between life and art. It was a poignant reminder of the beauty that emerges when individuals come together to create something greater than themselves.
Furthermore, the cinematography in the documentary was truly captivating, seamlessly blending the 'real' with the artistic, and transporting viewers into a world teeming with creativity and expression. The camera work allowed me to become a silent observer, navigating through Scooter's world with a sense of awe and wonder.
In conclusion, "Scooter LaForge: A Life of Art" is a mesmerizing journey that transcends boundaries, inviting viewers to explore the transformative power of art and the beauty of human connection. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity of art to inspire, uplift, and transform lives.
Fated (2024)
Clever thriller
Miles a successful banker receives a threatening text that will put him on a crash course. He doesn't know who's behind it but he quickly realizes that unless he does something about it, everyone he loves could be the next victim.
Larry Lowe does a good job at bringing credibility to our protagonist and the pacing imposed by the director bring enough tension to keep you hooked. The supporting cast also do a good job helping our hero untangle this web he finds himself in.
Will Milles find who's behind the text before someone else falls victim to this evil mastermind? Give this indie gem a go and you'll find out.
UN-RESOLVED (2022)
Great redemption story
This indie gem is a story about redemption where an ex con Tremaine is trying to get his life back on track. He's got a girl who is terminally ill and one who is mixed up with the wrong crowd, trying to hold on to dear life. Out protagonist is trying to go straight however the underworld is constantly trying to pull him back in.
The pacing of the movie is slow so our characters are allowed to unravel into a modern day tragic story with dire consequences. The cinematography and the locations were particularly good and the violent scenes were cleverly shot.
Can Tremaine find forgiveness and reconcile with his past, watch it and you will find out.
A Dangerous Prey (2024)
Fast paced action flick
This movie is about a young black couple trying the leave the hood behind in search of a more upscale setting. However, once moved they are targeted by some low life white racists who don't want them in their neighbourhood. And so a fight for survival begins, where our leads determination and survival instincts are put to the test. With a running time of 73 minutes this film is compact enough to keep us entertained. Marlon Ladd's charisma helps with the pacing and Taja Brittaney's ferocity sells the plot. If you are looking for a good survival movie with plenty of action and good performances, give this indie gem a go.
Running Through Darkness (2018)
Enjoyable indie thriller
Our main protagonist goes out for a jog and finds an old flame beaten by the side of the road. She asks for his help, to kill the man who hurt her. He looks into this guy who turns out to be a proper nutcase. But suddenly he is in danger because this volatile guy wants something from him. Now both his morality and his will to survive are challenged and he must decide on how to get out of this nightmare. We follow his struggle, question his reasoning and ultimately root for him to survive this ordeal.
Despite the budget constraints I feel that this indie has achieved what it set to do, pull us into the world of deceit and despair, where we root for the protagonist to come out alive.
Introspectum Motel (2021)
Boundary pushing indie
This is a brave indie that explores sexuality, fidelity and the belief in the family values to the max. The sex scenes are realistic and so is the violence. It is definitely meant for adult audiences as it is a heavy film, uncomfortable to watch at times. It will not be everyone's cup of tea but for those who enjoy character driven films, they are in for quite a treat.
The dialogue and the twists kept me engaged and the climax was awesome. It is definitely an unique film and the storyline and atmosphere will outway the flaws and budgetary constraints.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers give this one a go.
Butterfly (2022)
Urban drama with plenty of heart
You can't have a butterfly without a caterpillar... This movie introduces us to the life of Butterfly a young woman who works as a stripper. Her husband is a junkie who's addiction caused social services to take their child yet she still cared for him until his death.
She ends up on the street, and with no residence, it seems like the chances of getting her son back are grim. She finds temporary employment at a local bar and grill however trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes.
Butterfly is a story about the struggle to keep our heads above the water when life just keeps on pulling you under. If you like urban dramas give this one a go, you won't be disappointed.
PPP Loan Gone (2022)
What did I just watch?
This movie is insane in the way it balances humour, action and drama. It's perhaps it's best selling point. You will see some Spike Lee influences but hey, that's a great thing. I also like the use of breaking the 4th wall, it works really well here. It also works as a satire for our consumerism based society where money is God and everybody want a piece of the pie.
All in all it's a wild rollercoaster of a movie that can be serious even though it doesn't take itself to seriously. Give this bad boy a go.
Love N Quarantine (2022)
The thin line between love and hate
Love is grand and easy when things are working according to a plan, but what happens when you are stuck with the one you love when the world is falling apart? Ben and Caroline get an overdose of each other and things go crazy. First it's the small things, than it escalades to the point where paranoia dictates their every move. If you feel like a wacky quarantine love/hate story, give this one a go.
The Lost (2022)
Story of loss, guilt and desperation
This is a power movie about the loss of a child.
It will not be an easy watch especially for parents, as it portrays trauma quite accurately.
If you are in the mood for a heavy hitter, give this one a go.
Vacation Friends (2021)
Awsome light comedy
This one's a wacky comedy where John Cena steals the show. Throw your brain away for a couple of minutes and you will enjoy the s**t out of it. Good old school comedy without stupid slapstick stuff.
Boston2Philly (2016)
Emotional indie drama
Cool coming of age drama about anger, loss and redemption. It's about ones fight against the cards they've been given. It's also a love letter to Philadelpia. Give this little gem a go.
Horror in the High Desert (2021)
It holds it's place within the genre
If you enjoy found footage horror genre, you will like this one. The buildup is really good. A dude called Gary goes missing in the Nevada wilderness and people close to him are interviewed in order to find out what really happened to him. Through these interviews we find out what kind of person Gary was. The story is helped along by great cinematography and an unsettling score. And the ending, well, let's just say it's something else.
AVA: A Twist in the Road (2021)
When life turns you upside-down
This little indie gem is for the fans of drama. There is death, legal battles, loss of identity and financial security.
Ava's life is turned upside down when the love of her life is taken form her. She then has to fight her way through family, friends and a lot of negativity in order to discover who she really is and what she wants...and it's definitely no joyride.
Stephanie (2017)
Awsome supernatural thriller
This is an awsome suspenseful thriller that doesn't rely on jump scares. It takes its time to build a great story. The acting is amazing, the direction is hands on and the cinematography and the score run perfectly together. It's honestly one of the best supernatural thrillers out there.
Undercover Blues (1993)
One of the best comedies of the 90s
The story is bonkers, the leads are awsome and the supporting cast is Stanley Tucci and Fiona Shaw. What else can you ask for?
Muerte stills the show.
Mortal Kombat (2021)
Mediocre remake
I am a fan of the games and the original MK. I was looking forward to this one and although the fights are alright, that's all they are, alright, and so are the characters. Everything works... kinda. It's entertaining but you probably won't be blown away by anything.
