Attack the Block (2011)
It's a hilarious and gripping ride and the best part is...it never gets old!
"It's a hilarious and gripping ride and the best part is...it never gets old!" That is literally how to sum up this whole movie! Instead of being a dark, gritty take on the gangster type, it takes a much more enjoyable comedy route, and as a result, this movie never gets old. I've watched it countless times and every time I laugh at the same jokes, I enjoy the same sequences, and I get pumped every time the group gears up or prepares to face the aliens! Add that to the brilliant acting and amazingly written characters, you are in for one hell of a ride!
The low budget never shows as this film always looks fantastic; so great that you'd think it had a much higher budget than it actually does. This is probably due to the amazing cinematography/direction and gorgeous color palette. Folks, if you're having a lonely night, just watch this move to get a laugh out of it...and an orgasm or two in the eyes ;).
Evil Dead (2013)
One of the best remakes in recent years.
This film is definitely one of the best remakes in recent years. The female characters aren't just there for sex appeal, the characters aren't complete idiots, and we finally get a horror without teenagers being obnoxious and trying to get laid! However, that's not to say that this film has characters we can root for and relate to. The film doesn't really try to give us likable characters, they're just there to die, really. Therefore, upon retrospect of watching this movie, you realize that the characters don't really do anything before they die! So you might as well have obnoxious teens because no one in this movie has any character traits other than scared! The lead female (I can't remember her name) has the trait of being an ex heroin addict, but that's dropped instantly! At first it seems Eric may be our lead this time, but then he dies and that other guy takes over and I could barely tell he was there before he had to kill the demon in the end!
As a result of these poor characters, this movie doesn't really seem like a movie - just a series of events! The characters turn up, they die, the end. There's no progression or evolution of the plot, it's just there to set up a few cool moments and that's really all you can take away from the movie - it's pretty freaking cool!
The deaths and action will either make you cringe and look away from the screen, or make you whoop in excitement as you watch the badass chaos ensue! I'm personally the latter. This of course means the effects, both practical and CGI are spot on and there's not a single moment that'll make you think "they really could've cleaned that up a bit.
In the end, really, the only thing going for this movie is the cool action and effects, the story and character writing feels lazy but it is one hell of a fun time!
Age of Dinosaurs (2013)
No words to describe how awful this film is!
Terrible CGI, terrible acting, terrible plot! The film is so repetitive- find my daughter, found her, oh damn, lost her again! Time to find her again! Rinse and repeat.
A defense for the awful CGI may be 'They had a low budget' in that case, they should have never made the movie! Simple as that! I wouldn't mind if this movie didn't exist because they had no budget.
We could have had a good movie with bad CGI, but the crew weren't trying! No movie screams 'We don't give a crap' more than this one! It just reeks of disinterest more than any film I've ever seen!
Also, as far as I'm concerned, being a firefighter doesn't mean being in the military! So I don't understand why our main character is such an expert with guns and fighting simply through putting out fires!
The Dark Knight Stumbles (2015)
Original, smart and hilarious!
Rob's YouTube series, Cinematic Venom, has never failed to make me laugh; and his first full length feature sticks to that tradition! The Dark Knight Stumbles is everything I expected and more. Never have I seen a low budget movie so original and smart!
I personally was lost by the end of the film on my first couple viewings but that's just a compliment as to how much thought was put into this film. It's definitely not lazy!
Some are gonna hate this movie cos not every joke gets a laugh, but in my opinion DKS has got the most chuckles out of me than any big budget film has in a long time!
The actors are all great and you can see the dedication they have and how much fun they are having, especially Rob himself! Other standouts include Craig (who gets the most laughs from me), Howard who does a great job in his role, and Alex as Bane.
Does the film have it's flaws? Yes, I find Steve's (the Joker) habit of chapping his lips distracts me from the scene as they're so frequent and loud. Other than a few tiny other nitpicks I have, that's pretty much all that brings this film down! But to make up for it is many standout scenes and jokes (mainly the Whitey and Krazza scene) and ideas.
