What We Did on Our Holiday (2014)
A total joy
I've never heard of this film and stumbled across it on prime. What a treat it is, the cast is perfect and the children steal the show, it's funny, warm, wise and so touching.
Billy Connelly and Dave Tennant in one film is enough to make any one with sense give it a go but those kids add so much to it you must watch it
The location in the Highlands is sublime and the film never loses pace, it feels real at all times and has a core lesson about love and loss
It has become my go to feel good film and I will watch it again and again
Well done to all involved, I can't believe I'd never heard of it.
The Fall of the House of Usher (2023)
Poe reborn
I have always loved the Edgar Allen Poe stories so was excited to see this, I was not disappointed.
Everything about it is so well crafted it's both disturbing and a joy
The moral message is clear and told so intriguingly with a creeping certainty towards the finale
I loved it so much and found no fault at all, acting, script, story, cinematography, wardrobe, sound and pacing were perfection.
I didn't quite watch it back to back but I would have it time allowed!
It's left me with so much to dwell on
I'm sure I will watch it again
All hail Mike Flanagan.
Thank you for this masterpiece
Please watch it.
The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021)
Great story
This is a beautiful tale told so well, it's an emotional journey which brought me to tears a few times. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the part of Wain with such tenderness, he captures the obvious turmoil he faced, so well.
The cinematography is a joy and being a cat lover myself the addition of so many cats was wonderful.
Claire Foy plays her part so well, they both have such eccentricities and play their parts perfectly
I thought they captured the period well and it really shows how hard life was then
I'm glad I watched this and if you love a period drama with gritty realism then I highly recommend.
The Banishing (2020)
Hammer style haunting
Woefully underrated in my opinion. Very chilling well executed haunted house story. I found it disturbing and well acted with great sound and setting.
The Last Bus (2021)
Life love and loss
I'm an admirer of Timothy Spall and character driven dramas so I knew I would enjoy this. Its a melancholy tale of life when you've lived with a terrible loss that you take to your death. TS plays
the part in a quiet nuanced way that shows you the sheer will that drives him to complete his mission
Its tragic but beautifully told with an array of lifes best and worst people on the way.
Rocketman (2019)
Mind blown
Its rare I write a review but needs must. Occasionally a film captures your heart and it stays in your life, I've watched this 3 times and know I will watch it over and over. Taron Egerton is in every way a dream to watch, acting at Anthony Hopkins level even at his . Young age. His voice was incredible and for me he captured Elton perfectly. The story was beautifully told with the music perfectly matched with the situation. I've sang the songs every day since. I have a new respect for Sir Elizabeth..although at 54 yes old I've grown up with him I'm thankful for this film to give an insight into his struggles . Just perfection.
Bridgerton (2020)
Glorious
I'm a life long Jane Austen fan, so am a sucker for Regency drama but this was quite something else!
The detail, casting, costumes, use of current music, cinematography, humour and story line were superb
The chemistry between Daphne and Simon was delicious and so believable. The range and diversity of characters kept my interest throughout but the traditional line of Austens story telling was so apparent it was sublime ..well done to all involved.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Exceptional story
I love The Shining and I loved the doctor sleep book so for me this was a total joy to watch. Acting, cinematography, attention to detail and the connection to the original was perfect. Goosebumps at the music and the Overlook scenes . Casting was genius too. A classic I will rewatch
Mindhunter (2017)
Refreshingly original intelligence
There are many bad reviews here, I get it, we all enjoy different things. One thing i can't understand is the criticisms of the acting. I think its superb, the chemistry between the 2 leads is so easy and believable, the guy who plays Ed Kemper is just astounding, every frame with him in it is compelling and the contrast of Prof Carr is genius. I also give kudos to the 70's vibe, the music, sets and props are spot on and the sociological and cultural norms are well portrayed.
It's a slow burner but that builds the tension and balances against the intensity of the interviews with the killers. I love it ...both seasons...bring on the 3rd
Thronecast (2011)
Great fun
I had to write a review as someone who watches every episode. I love Sue Perkins, she's a witty and sharp and a true thrones fan who shows her true reactions
Sometimes the guests are poor and seem to not take it seriously but sue makes up for that
I love the discussion and postulating
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Absolutely superb
I rarely write reviews but this is a must, if only to encourage others to watch.
Everyone who worked on this deserves praise, the writing, the cast, the cinematography, the acting, the story telling and the sets are a equally perfect.
The development of such deep characters is such a huge part of this supernatural tale, I've watched many horrors but this got under my skin and scared me. I think it was due to the switch between childhood and adulthood and the prolonged appearance of the ghosts ..I hate getting a tiny glimpse!!
