Unforgiven (1992)
Simply stunning!
I'm going to keep this relatively short. I've seen most of Eastwood's westerns from the 'Dollars' trilogy through to Unforgiven. Considering this journey includes such powerhouses as "High Plains Drifter" and "The Outlaw Josie Wales" I consider this to be his western masterpiece (it's certainly his swansong on the genre). If you like Clint Eastwood films and/or westerns this is a MUST WATCH. General film fans will surely appreciate what is going on here, it's film making at close to it's possible best. Somewhere in my top 10 films of all time (although I could never actually put those ten into any semblance of order!) this is a movie that moves in both meanings (pace and emotion). Looking for your next watch?here it is.......
A Dark Song (2016)
Oh dear NO, don't put yourself through THIS!
For all but the last 10 minutes of this film it's basically two people isolated in a remote country mansion trying to create a spooky atmosphere but failing miserably. Very little happens, it bored the socks of me to put it politely and it's full of mumbo jumbo about summoning angels/demons which with 10 mins left on the clock the main character manages to do. Here we get a few special and slightly disturbing visual effects thrown in to what is otherwise a pitiful attempt at a horror film. Not worth the wait and I was left wondering why I waste my life on such films as this, I could have watched Emmerdale with more enjoyment!
Landmine Goes Click (2015)
Revenge is sweet...........or perhaps not!!
Well, what a surprise this one turned out to be. The first half of the film centres around the lead male being confined to standing on a landmine courtesy of his so called best mate, who having found out he'd been sleeping with his woman decided to play a practical joke on him. Things turn mightily sour when a local rambler turns up on the scene and starts to get quite unpleasant via the playing of a slightly sadistic game. Up to this point you can be forgiven for thinking this is going to be another run of the mill horror/revenge film with a sprinkling of female revenge as per "I Spit On Your Grave" (albeit not nearly as good). What happens mid movie however changes this and we are left to view revenge from the angle of the male who was stood on the landmine. The ending is quite shocking, not least in it's content but I particularly liked the way the camera remains fixed on the lead character even when you expect to see other things going on and this amplifies the moment of revenge and leaves the viewer considering who ultimately is the greater of the two evils (the rambler or the landmine guy) and one is left with a sour taste in the mouth as the credits roll. Definitely worth the watch.
The Fear of Darkness (2015)
Had potential but the ending is very confusing....
This is one of those films that has enough going for it (good cinematography, decent acting) to keep you watching. I generally enjoy the output of films from Australia and for the first hour this in no exception with a few genuinely creepy moments. However, whatever enjoyment is had is quickly shot down in the last quarter of the film with an ending that leaves you scratching your head and wondering why you bothered in the first place. The "supernatural" presence in the film could have been a whole lot more terrifying but in the end....confusion reigns! I am not sure enough viewers will figure out the ending within the natural run time of the film so it's hard to recommend.
