Onward (2020)
2 brothers go on an adventure
Onward a story of two elf teenage brothers Ian and Barley going on a quest to Resurrect their long dead father with the help of a magic spell, stone and map they must acquire along their journey. But when mom finds out her sons are missing she teams up with her new police boyfriend and a legendary manticore to bring them home.
Overall I enjoyed this movie a lot. This had all the elements a good Disney film. Character growth, emotion, heart, and humor. The animation style was great, and the story was great too.
Jackie (2016)
Natalie Portman at her best!
This film is simple yet so hard. The entire film is about Jackie Kennedy doing her best to honor her Husband's legacy and burial service. We all read about the assassination of John F. Kennedy but for me personally I never cared because it didn't resonate with me at the time. I probably thought that's in the past who cares. Well, I care now. this film makes you feel as if you were living in that time and you're witnessing everything unfold. We are in that car, that airplane, and White House every step of the way. My heart goes out to the Kennedy's. Jackie Kenedy was the 1st First Lady to let the American people into the White House through television and She made the people feel like family. After watching the film I felt as if we lost President Obama and I am even more grateful that he was our President. I am not only grateful to Barack but also to Michelle Obama for making the American People feel like family and love all around. This film is extraordinary because it takes you to 1963 and you are in just as much pain as Jacqueline Kennedy. I give this film a 10/10. Go see this film if you haven't already.
Swiss Army Man (2016)
Pleasantly Surprised
When this film came out in theaters I heard mixed reviews saying that it's either for you or isn't. That being said after finally watching the film I can't believe how great it was. This is not a perfect 10/10 film but its crazy good. Daniel Radcliffe's character is stupid af and yet I fell in love with him. Paul Dano was also great but Daniel blew me away (with his farts). This film is about Paul who is stuck on an island about to kill himself discovers a body (Radcliffe) and slowly brings him back to life. Pauls character was dead on the inside and by showing Daniel how great life can be he himself begins to come back to life. The story takes place on an island and in a forest/jungle and they make their way back to civilization. What these two characters go through together enriches their friendship and surprisingly it moves us even with some ridiculous premises. The music in the film is amazing and the performances are fantastic. I may be praising the film only because it shouldn't have worked and not only did it work but it exceeded that. Overall, I give Swiss Army Man an 8.5/10. This is a survival comedy at heart with some twists and turns.
Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Underrated film GO SEE IT
This is the 4th film from the company that brought us Coraline, the Boxtrolls, and ParaNorman. Claymation is an underrated art and under-appreciated art. I feel like the general audience aren't interested in this art and that's sad. This film is AMAZING. This is a story about a kid named Kubo who is living in hiding from his family because they want to turn Kubo blind. Kubo goes on an adventure with his magical powers and his companions to obtain items to defeat his family once and for all. This film does a great job on portraying the Japanese culture which allows us to connect to the characters with our own family morals. The music in the film works well and the themes of the film Hit Home! This is truly an amazing film and if you haven't seen it yet do yourself a favor and do so and you may need tissues. I give Kubo a 9.6/10. This was hands down my favorite animated film of 2016.
Trolls (2016)
50/50 Chance to like or hate it
This film is about trolls who escaped from being eaten by these bigger ugly trolls who believe the only way to be happy is to eat a troll. Later on in the film Poppy (the Princess troll)l convinces their enemy's that happiness is inside all of us but sometimes you need help to bring it out; which leads to a happy ending. The themes in this film are pretty great but the execution of the film not so much. From the beginning to the end there are a number or sing and dance along's that were only in the movie to pass time. There are a lot of good things in the film and a lot of bad one's, however the number of bad ones are heavier. Overall, this film tried to be for adults and kids but failed. Instead, it's a kid film with singing and dancing. 5.2/10
Moonlight (2016)
Oscar Contender!
If you have not seen Moonlight go check it out. Definitely worth your time and money. This is a story about a Boy growing up with the struggles or his environment and sexuality. This film uses 3 different actors to portray Little/ Chiron at 3 different stages of his life. Without spoiling anything, Each stage of Little's/Chiron's life he deals with new and some of the same problems from his past. Each actor in the film are great; to highlight some are: Little's Mother, Teresa, Juan, and Kevin. The Editing of the film worked well and the Cinematography was great. The soundtrack/score or the film helped tremendously; the film uses music to give the audience a sense of how a character is feeling. Overall I give Moonlight a 9.5/10 . It's a hard life and a beautiful story.
Deadpool (2016)
Warning this is Rated R
DEADPOOL!!!! This film is amazing, why you ask because of Ryan Renolds! Not only was his performance true to the character but he was involved every step of the way to make this film. After X-Men The Wolverine Origins put a crappy Deadpool on screen we are lucky enough to have seen this. Now talking about the film. This film uses non-linear story-telling, Narriation, 4th wall breaking, a montage and lots of great action and comedy. Deadpool can do anything and the creators of the film took this to the next level, just look at all the marketing. For a film that had a 60 Million budget, it was incredible. Deadpool is not just a superhero movie but also a romance, comedy, and tragedy if you will. Deadpool is true to the comics which makes this movie great. Theirs a lot of great comedy from Ryan Renolds and TJ Miller and great action. Overall I give this film a 9.5/10 for being amazing. If you're wondering why no 10/10 it's because I found some of the scenes where they make fun of their X-Men films or the Studio a little head hitting. Deadpool one of my favorite of 2016 and looking forward to CABLE.
The BFG (2016)
Amazing Family Film!
Going into the film I had no idea what to expect except for a Big Friendly Giant. This film completely felt like Spielberg and it was a heart warming film with a little of an unbelievable ending. Sophie played by Ruby Barnhill is a great young actress and her relationship with the BFG played by Mark Rylance made the whole film. At first, the BFG kidnaps Sophie to protect his existence from being revealed but later on Sophie sees good in the Giant and learns that he is the runt of the group of giants. The film deals with dreams the good ones and the bad ones and all in between have a different color. It reminds me of Inside Out. The BFG collects dreams and has the ability to create dreams. Sophie being a tiny human teaches the giant to stand up for himself and to trust more. which leads us to the ending. Sophie and the BFG team up and get help from the Queen and together they get rid of the mean giants. Overall, the film touched upon many human themes and is a well made beautiful film. If you haven't seen it I encourage you to do so. 8.4/10.
Assassin's Creed (2016)
I liked it lol.
Now I know a lot of hope/weight was on this film because we thought it was the chosen one to put an end to the idea that Hollywood can't make good video game movies. Let me start off by saying I have not played the video games but I have seen gameplay of many of the Assassin's Creed Games. Some things that I do like about the film are the action during Fassbender's memories; basically, all the fighting scenes are well made and choreographed. When hearing about the films problems I only agreed with the character development and some of the cutting back and forth between the Artemis and present time. I didn't mind the cutting between it until learning more about the games and how they take place mostly in the past or memories of the person's ancestor. Also going into this film I knew what to expect, meaning i already knew the character and am already attached to him(them). So the Under-Character Development did not bother me as much. I did not love the film because of the pace or feel from certain scenes and characters, but I didn't hate it either. Overall there are a lot of good action scenes in this film and Michael Fassbender is great. I didn't come for the story as much as the action. 6.7/10
Doctor Strange (2016)
Loved this film! May contain Spoilers
Knowing nothing from the comic books this is a great film and origin story. Dr. Steven Strange plays a Tony Stark sort of character but a little more of an asshole. The first 10 minutes of the film before the accident he's full of himself and has it all. After the accident, he loses it all and goes on the journey to grow and learns many things from the Ancient One played by Tilda Swinton. The Character Development is great, the fighting/magic battles are great and the reality-bending is Amazing! Some flaws in the film (in my opinion) are from the villain and main villain. So Kaecilius played by Mads Mikkelsen was a former student taught by the Ancient one and he went "rogue" and learned the dark magic. In the film, he seems to be the main threat which he sort of is until the ending where we see this "Thing" BEING come to destroy earth but DR. Strange saves the day using the time gem to do a constant loop of time until the enemy gives in to Strange's demands. So the villains to me weren't great. Another flaw I find is with Racheal McAdams character. I was hoping for a bigger role for her instead of a "love interest". Other than that the film is Amazing. This was one of my favorites of 2016. #RIPAncientOne
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
Nice Action but story wasn't great. Spoilers!
Like all Tom Cruise films, the action is great. The first Jack Reacher and this one aren't connected meaning there in no link/mention of anything from the first film in this one. The story is basically Reacher finds out that Cobie Smulders character is in trouble or is set up and he's going to save her. Now what's cool about her character is that she's no damsel is distress, Cobie's character is a bad-ass like Maria Hill. Once Jack rescues her theirs this weird side story of Jack finding out he has a daughter and so he now has to protect a teenage girl and Cobie (sort of) because they are now on the run. The relationship between Cobie and Cruise is what I really enjoyed from the film plus the action/fight scenes/explosions. Overall I give the film a 6.5/10. I always love seeing Cobie Smulders on screen so maybe a little biased.
Masterminds (2015)
Not Worth Your Money or Your Time.
This movie had an great comedic cast and it's horrible. Most of the funny scenes are in the trailer. The plot is Zach Galifianakis robs a bank for Kristen Wiig and then gets screwed over by Owen Wilson. So at the end Zach has to step up and clear his name and get the girl. Zach, Kate McKinnon (his wife), Kristen, and Owen play beyond stupid characters that are totally unrelatable. Leslie Jones is also bad in this movie, but she had one highlight in the movie. For me the funniest part of the film were the bloopers they show in the end of the movie. The story is based on a true story and the premise is interesting, i feel like it would have been better to make this into a drama. Overall Masterminds not a good movie.
