Foundation (2021)
Not quite the books, but a great TV show with a solid foundation built upon them
Back when I read the books the most compelling part, aside from the introductory chapter, was the principle behind the story and not so much the stories themselves. Probably mindblowing when it came out but 80 years later most of the stories read like aged space age Sci-fi comics without the pictures (impressive considering it predating those, but badly aged nonetheless). In the end the only thing i remember is the seldon reveals. But if you really like the books, then I think the only way to make a true TV version would be to make it a ultra hard-core retro futuristic one. Keep all the campy stuff etc. Probably way too niche to get a budget like this.
I think they kept the good parts and surrounded it with more exciting story. Especially when considering the TV format. It took about four episodes and I started binging it.
Summary:
+ kept the good stuff
+ replaced the filler content with their own very good writing
+ good pacing
+ good acting with most recurring characters
+ amazing visuals
- no slide rules
- the predictions are a tad too specific at times.
I hope the rabid book fans doesn't cancel the show, because I'm itching for season 2.
Joker (2019)
It's ok to be inspired by things, not to copy them
It might bring something new to the table for someone who haven't seen taxi driver or Andy kauffman, but seeing them reenacted within a superhero franchise didn't do much for me.
Volatile Earth (2017)
Documentary editors take us for fools once again
The subjects are interesting and the footage is really good. I think they had a good choice of people to follow throughout the episodes but I'm not sure. Sadly it follows the very American standard of injecting ridiculously short fragments of sentences from the people being interviewed, as a sort of confirmation to the shallow and dramatic statements from the blockbuster trailer narration.
A good documentary build the storyline and serve the information through interviews, while the narration ties them together by, for example, telling us why this person is interviewed or what the mountain being depicted is called and located.
You probably had the material to do a good documentary, and destroyed it all in the editing room. Please end this.
