False Witness (2009)
Better than I expected
I saw this at home on DVD, and only realized it was a TV mini-series after I checked the running time ( over 180 minutes! ). Anyway, I decided to see it in one shot, if bored I could always stop it or pause for more popcorn! I found the plot a bit of a mix of other stories' ideas, but it was well developed and ended up quite interesting. I happen to appreciate most British/Aussie movies, especially the espionage genre, where they have a way of keeping you always wondering on the next move, like a chess game. Details come and go very quickly and sometimes I was glad on having subtitles to better understand the accent...! Acting is very good as I expected from the selected cast. I guess I was tired after 3 hours, but I could hold for another half if needed!
The Departed (2006)
Very Good but not outstanding as I expected
I liked the plot, the cast and the photography ( outstanding ). All actors are first-grade, and IMO Leonardo had the best performance of his career up to now. Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen were excellent as usual. I am a great fan on Jack Nicholson and he was perfect in his role, unfortunately my disappointment came through his character on the scene where he shows his member when him and Leo are in the movie theater! That was a very gross and completely unnecessary event, which only contributed for a stronger "R" rating, maybe that's why some people comment that Scorcese has been doing more "commercial" films lately trying to get the Oscar ( which he got... ). Anyway the movie would loose nothing without that grotesque scene and I was really disappointed at Mr. Scorcese for including it and Jack for accepting doing it! Actually I watched the movie on DVD in my home theater, so I'm not aware if the theater version explicitly shows it like that! The plot is very rich with details, all very well characterized by the actors. Like someone else said, the end was cut too short for everything that happens, mainly considering other scenes which were a bit longer than needed. As I said before, I was overwhelmed by the excellent photography.
