Life (I) (2017)
5/10
Thrilling, Horrific, but completely Implausible.
22 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
From the beginning where the writers suggest that "coolant" is needed in space, every "scientist" makes one foolish and catastrophic blunder after another. Acting on emotion rather than logic, these "doctors" condemn each other (and the entire human race) to extinction. Towards the end, there is even a scene where a few members appear at risk of being "sucked out" of the ship, yet their bodies manage to survive exploding in the void of space is just one of the implausible situations Rhett Reese expects his audience to buy. Somewhat entertaining, but very little of the script is believable.

Freaks (2018)

Plodding and boring. Don't waste you time.

I cannot understand why there were so many favorable reviews of this film. I watched it because the imdb rating was over 6.5, and after an hour of nothing but repeated nonsense, I wanted turn it off, but I stuck it it out. Big mistake. It never got any better.

Bloody and mystical, but worth the watch
27 December 2021
Steven McHattie aces dual roles in this strange, sometimes drool comedic thriller. Sparse but methodical script, with a hauntingly beautiful score. Fans of H. P. Lovecraft, William S. Burroughs, David Lynch and Nicolas Winding Refn will certainly find some joy in this film.

Age Out (2018)

Abandoned youth
20 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Here is a story about unwanted children, one in particular, who is passed from foster home to foster home, for failing to get along (sometimes his own fault), and when turns 18, he is released from foster care (Ages Out) and tries to survive on his own, but ultimately gets mixed up with some other unsavory youths and experiences a brutal, life-changing event. The story is engrossing, and while watching this I kept feeling "yeah, this is good, I think I'll give it a 7", but when it got to the end, I was greatly disappointed in the empathy of the female lead. Yup, those last 3 minutes dropped it from a 7 to a 6. If the film had ended 3 minutes earlier, and the final scene was cut from the film, I would have rated it a 7, but the final meeting of the two players was bunk.

Strange but absorbing
14 May 2020
For fans of the comedic horror genre of Andy Warhol's Frankenstein and Dracula, and for the brave souls who enjoyed the sickening chills of The Human Centipede, comes Kevin Smith's entry into the twisted and freakish. Sometimes hilarious, occasionally mysterious, and often dramatically thrilling, this small gem is quite out of the ordinary, and not for everyone, but it contains a robust script with a near plausible mad scientist story. Definitely for the art film crowd who tend to lean towards the chillingly wierd.

In the style of David Lynch...
14 May 2020
Dark, moody, and slow-paced, but creepy and gripping at the same time. A mysterious story of three young girls, told in vignettes, leaving the viewer to decide whether they were watching a flashback, and wondering when each of the scenes occurred in relation to the others. The acting is top notch, and the music and sound effects kept tension throughout. The interaction of the parents is mesmerising and deeply dramatic. If you liked the original Twin Peaks series, you'll love this film.

Reminiscent of Tarkovsky's The Stalker
5 March 2020
What begins as a crime story about abduction and the Stockholm Syndrome, melds into a science fiction tale that includes the struggles of modern love. Visually artistic, with an emphasis on soundtrack. Similar in many ways to Andrei Tarkovsky's 2 hour and 41 minute masterpiece "The Stalker" about the discovery and exploration of a mysterious world comprised of ordinary objects.
