Khrustalyov, mashinu! (1998)
It's Hard to Be a God...
And it is tough living in Stalinist Russia after the war, especially when you are both a general and a doctor at a time when each were being purged. It doesn't help being married into a Jewish family either as Nazi's were not the only ones to have little love for them. I enjoyed this film very much although I had to first watch without subtitles. I have since seen it several times and soak more of it up with each viewing. If you need steady action or have not submersed yourself in foreign language films previously you may wish to pass. Or you can watch for 5 or 10 minutes, decide you don't get it and leave a substandard comment or worse, a review.
Möbius (2013)
I am disappointed that I could not get into this film.
At all. Period. I t as not the language. It wasn't the actors, locations or cinematography. I guess I
would have to blame the cat and mouse game of a story. Everything else follows suit.
Poslusne hlásím (1958)
I am from the USA and I love this film.
My tastes run counter to those of my fellow countrymen, it would seem. I have been watching films from all over the world all my life. At least half of the films I view and review are from other countries. Having said that it is not necessary to have a foreign background to watch this historical comedy. You only need the patience to read the subtitles. A pause button may be helpful.
Le doulos (1962)
My favorite J.P. Melville film and a favorite gangster film. Was fun to see here that it's also a favorite of Scorsese.
Some seem to think Melville's films are too slow and thus boring. I would argue that this is more to do with atmospheric as well as dramatic concerns. I don't find his output boring at all. This is my favorite Melville film. I first recall seeing this film around 25 years ago and it has steadily grown on me. Melville not only introduces us to Belmondo, but he also gets an altogether different sort of performance from what would generally follow. Forget that the film is almost as old as I am, is in black and white and is in French, three strikes to many would be viewers. I recommend that you give it a try. I promise it won't break you.
De noorderlingen (1992)
After enjoying the film Borgman prime uploaded many Van Warnerdam and company films. "the Northerners" I give top billing 10.
I have watched several, perhaps six films by this ensemble cast and company and enjoyed them all. Prime is wrong in saying they were all released in 2018. The award winning Borgman was released in 2014 and Schneider vs Bax released 2016. Practically unknown in the west yet they have received a special award Russia in 2004. The music alone is worth the price of admission courtesy of another Van Warderman, Vincent? They are dutch not German, enjoy the subtitles. There is so much more that I wanted say about these wonderful films, but three previous attempts to post reviews on Prime have failed and I am tired. Sorry for all the swearwords.
PS prime,100 character reviews,? Get real!
Der neunte Tag (2004)
Volker Schlondorf is one of our best directors.
This is a truly powerful film. Faith is not a prerequisite to having an almost religious experience in viewing it.
