The Simpsons Movie (2007)
Humor, Nostalgia, and Environmental Messages
When rewatching "The Simpsons Movie" after approximately 15 years, I was apprehensive about my fond memories, fearing they might be merely a product of nostalgia.
It is undeniable that there has been a decline in the quality of the show over the years, something to be expected for such a long-running series. Nevertheless, the movie continues to stand out, with many hilarious moments deserving a place on my list alongside the best episodes.
The metalinguistic humor introduced from the start, with Homer in a movie theater saying, "I can't believe we're paying to see something we can watch on TV for free!" is a great highlight of this new medium, much like the experiments of the Halloween episodes.
The story remains cohesive in the style of traditional episodes, starting in one direction and taking an unexpected turn that, by the end, doesn't even seem like the same story we were following. However, it is not simply a series of segments like an extended episode, but rather a narrative that unfolds over nearly two hours. The environmental backdrop ties all the elements together, and in the end, the emphasis is on the importance of family, with Homer learning to consider others.
It's interesting to note that some negative comments criticized the fact that the head of an agency committed to protecting the environment is the movie's main villain. Nevertheless, the work clearly conveys its pro-environment message, following a tradition of the show: the inclusion of goofy jokes mixed with social commentary. This approach, which is a hallmark of the series (at least in its early seasons), also shines in the movie. This combination of irreverent humor with social reflections adds an extra layer of depth and relevance to the narrative, a feature appreciated by those who choose to see it.
Director David Silverman and the movie's producers aim to create a standalone feature while still catering to the devoted fan base of "The Simpsons." However, there is a noticeable inclination to meet fan expectations. Many of the movie's jokes require prior knowledge of the show's secondary and tertiary characters, but overall, it is an enjoyable work that can make anyone laugh and have fun from start to finish.
