Rocky Balboa (2006)
ROCKY Returns
Just left the first showing of Rocky Balboa. All I can say is, with a day off tomorrow, I'm going back to see it again. First saw the trailer at the Casino Royale opening and was so inspired I wished it was playing then. The reviews on Rocky seemed to reflect the age of the reviewer; those old enough to have seen the original when it opened were ready for this movie and rated it highly. Younger reviewers could only remember Rocky III/IV/V and were not as excited with this addition. As for my review, the fact that Stallone had $100 in his pocket when he tried to present the first Rocky script, refused $350,000 to sell the script and walk away, and instead, demanded to star in the movie, gives him a free ride for life. The new movie, Rocky Balboa, ranks right up there with the original. Winners include Sly himself, his son, Marie and the Champ; great jobs by all. Don't miss this movie.
Zig Zag (1970)
One That Everyone Missed
I caught this movie in the theater when it came out. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire movie. At the end I jumped up yelling "No, No, it can't end like this". I was not alone at being dumbstruck at the ending. With all the junk on video/DVD this movie deserves to be available on VHS/DVD. The character played by George Kennedy was almost crazed in his desire to provide money for his family after he died. No matter what he had to do, up to capital punishment, was not outside his moves. When it became apparent that he wasn't dying from a brain tumor, and all he could hope for was the reward money and his execution, his actions to prove his innocence appeared to suggest failure and success. The ending will knock the viewer silly.
Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea (2004)
Salton Sea: Good News/Bad News
Having taken specific trips to see Mono Lake and Owens Lake, it seemed necessary to visit the Salton Sea. Good News: I visited and toured the entire Sea. Bad News: I didn't see "Plagues and Pleasures on the Salton Sea" before my trip. Obviously I saw things in the movie that I missed. Moreover, halfway through the movie I wanted to write Sonny Bono's wife and tell her to continue his work to save the sea. However, by the end of the movie, I realized the Saton Sea was lost. Anyone who has a chance to see this movie should not pass it up. The screenwriter and photographer have put together an unbelievable depiction of what the Sea was like and how far it has fallen. The collection of residents fits perfectly with the narrator. This is a group of John Waters characters. I will be seeing this movie again and I will be visiting the Salton Sea again to see what I missed.
