Sous emprise (2022)
A real tragic story about Audrey Mestre and a narcissist.
The cinematics are perfect and the story was strong enough to deliver the message, the only problem was the direction/ screenwriting who was unfortunately, a bit empty and maybe shallow aat some points.
Firstly, I believe that the actress who played Roxana was not a good choice she looks more with a model and less with Audrey Mestre and didn't look physically like a fit athlete diver. The acting wasn't great either many times felt pretty empty. Secondly we didn't get to really meet her, we saw her dark past but that was it, not character development for us to actually know the character. (I'm sure Camille Rowe can perform better than this, i think it was a direction mistake)
Her husband Pascal (Pipin Ferreras) was perfectly portrayed as a controlling and competitive narcissist. In the movie and in reality he is responsible for her death (the documentary "no limits" explains everything better). Her husband Pipin should have been arrested and prosecuted, yet he's free, there was not enough investigation on her death because he couldn't deal with her being better than him.
I think with a story like that we could have seen and felt more.
Netflix did a good job by changing the dates and names of events for legal reasons, and yet, we all got the message....
It's sad to see so many great women, being taken down physically ofr emotionally by weak narcissistic men.
Fresh (2022)
It was good but where is the ending?
In films like this I always feel like there is no ending. A very good kind of new age thriller, as a woman you will feel it close to home. Every fear, and dark thought of a womans mind is in that movie and I liked it BUT there were things just way to stupid for me to enjoy the movie completly... Firstly many times I got mad at people doing extreamly stupid things just to conviently fit to the plot. For example when both her friend Mollie AND the bartender Paul, NOT going to the police, especially Paul who seemed like he had no point going there... Secondly, the protagonist had this guy Steve not once but twice on the ground and didn't kill him for good, they left him on the floor in the kitchen without making sure he was dead, witch was frusturating and did not made sence. Thirdly they killed the woman witch was symbolic implying, that women who aren't helping other women are also the problem witch was ok but then nothing else happened, the phone ringed with the first guy she went out, kind of like a joke and then the end. I wanted something more.. Like them finding Paul or the police? Giving closure with the victims who were missing? Maybe the story on the news? Them moving on with their lives? Something after the chaos to make the audience feel the sence of rilief and redemption, it felt like someone just turned off the tv.
Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. (2022)
This series is not about fraud, vegans or cults. It's a warning about narcissists
It's easier to hate her, than to understand her. How come a very successful, smart woman, full of talent and promise ended up like this? Anthony is the kind of narcissist, con artist that Hollywood would glorify and make a movie about him, starring Leonardo Dicaprio. The kind of man that stole from his ex wife all her money and left her with a newborn (he even suggested to her to kill their child), the kind of man that could convinced every person to give him money, and that takes talent. It's not a surprise he was able to steal and literally suck Sarma's life out of her...
Any survivor of mental or physical abuse is always asked the same question "why didn't you leave?" and only survivors can understand why Sarma made such bad decisions. In the end you end up kind of hating Sarma for letting so many of her workers unpaid and sabotaging so much her life. But to understand who Sarma really is you need to isolate her from Anthony, before she met him.
Sarma before him, was a woman that helped a homeless man, store his winter clothes and became a friend of his, so much that he was the most loyal friend of hers. Sarma was the kind of woman that before Anthony always paid her debts and respected her workers, so much that even after the first closing of the store they all went back to her, still believing she'll come back. The kind of woman that even after the first closing she managed to find investors to open again in an impressively fast way.
Sarma as a teen looked like a smart kid who always felt isolated, alone and with a sense of not belonging in this world. She was brilliant, her only flaw? Her insecurity, and narcissists can smell that, and prepare their next move on their prey. Then her fear of not being able to pay off her 2 million dept came and at her lowest, she met Anthony, who at the time presented himself as her savior, from money problems and existential ones. He saw that weakness, saw her fear of aging, being nobody and her fear of her dog dying (the thing she loved the most) , and he step on that fear giving her an, what could only be a supernatural, solution for her fear. Any victim of abuse knows what it's like to be so manipulated into thinking the day is night, he even convinced her he's fat for a supreme reason, and it's clear that their sex was a result of coercion and not consensual. And it's why Anthony's ex wife was willing to help her more than anybody else, and sended the letter, because she's been there.
It's easy to hate her, to only think of her as an entitled rich white lady who didn't paid her workers. But is it just that? In the end she is responsible for her actions, but form the phone calls and texts it is clear that she was deceived. Any person rich or poor can become a victim of manipulation, and from having a store that celebrities go, ready to expand in the whole word, ending up in cheap motels in bad shape, crying and going to prison. Anthony was a textbook narcissist, he manipulated her, didn't let her to express her feelings by always saying it's not a good time now, isolated her from friends and family (the people that can help you). In the end the only way for a loser like him, could seem superior to her, was to low her at his level, because his whole game was about control. He never loved her, only the way she saw him and the fact that she believed his fake persona. She loved him or thought she did, and that to a person who hates himself, is like a "energy charge", the only problem is that, all the "energy" he draw has sucked out of her...
This show is important if you see it as a warning that your biggest enemy is many times the closest person in your life.
Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker (2020)
Great woman, good story, some historical inaccuracies
Loved this theme, Madam C. J. Walker was a very inspirational woman, and a big philanthropist. Though I wanted to see more of her achievements and big donations and philanthropy she did her story was delivered gracefully especially by Octavia. BUT some things felt historically off, like the clothing in some scenes was not yet invented, or some of the behaviors (like the openly lesbian doughter who was kissing another woman in front of people) that wasn't something a woman could do back then, AND THE MUSIC God the music, very off, this was the same mistake they did with the music in "the great Gatsby". You need music of the eara to set the mood, it's very important for the vintage feel. Beside these, the message was taken, and empowerment was given!
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Unrealistic and dangerous, especially for people with mental issues and depression
This show is far from realistic, with "black and white" bad and good characters that lack development... The show is actually dangerous for people with mental issues, by romanticizing suicide, making it look like the only solution and eventually weaponizing it as a form of revenge to people that hurt you. And because people think that this is helpful, is why it should canceled, for not only declines the possibility that parents, friends, teachers or others could help you. Also instead of engaging the reality of the darkness that occupies a person, especially a teenager, the show is just showing the superficial side, that the girl with depression would have been fine if the boy she wanted have loved her... Romanticizing death and making it look like justice, making her look mysterious and poetic, is seriously dangerous for people that are dealing with this. This show is an insult and a bad representation of depression, bullying and teenage life.
Last Holiday (2006)
If that's not a fell good movie, I don't know what is
You need a classic feel good comedy? The "Last Holiday" is that kind of movie. Answering with humor the old time classic question "what would you do if you had one month to live?", the movie takes you to a beautiful fun trip into the rich people's world, with Georgia Byrd a very adorable and believable character, that has many good life lessons to pass through, and many laughs to give with her originality.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
A unique film tour to the art industry and it's pretentiousness.
A unique film tour to the art industry and it's pretentiousness. I would say it's more of a psychological thriller (with few jumpscares) that maybe wasn't that scary. I believe Jakes (Morf) and Renes (Rhodora) performances lifted the film a lot, as they are amezing actors. My biggest problem was the ending, as it wasn't very unexpected and left me a bit disappointed, I wanted and expected something more to happen, especially with our protagonists either a way out or a more dramatic death. To be honest, I didn't get what was the point, apart from the obvious witch is I guess "don't make profit based on other peoples misery and respect the dead and their will"?
Close (2019)
Based on a real person, Jacquie Davis. Does NOT deserve 5.5 for sure.
The character is based on a real person Jacquie Davis, the most skillful female bodyguard who has actually saved children, has been shot, stabbed and more (look her up). Finally a good action movie, with no stupid unrealistic car chasing's and unrelatable cold and empty heroes. Noomi Rapace gave an outstanding performance (as always) that definitely lifts the movie a lot. We have seen this type of story before (young rich girl being rescued from kidnappers by her bodyguard etc) but that wasn't a problem for me. I liked the fact that the protagonist isn't the stereotypical hollywood bad-ass woman with no feelings and the strength of a gorilla, she is not necessary stronger than the bad guys, but quicker, more skillful and smarter. Easy watching film, that has smart action that doesn't let you get bored, but not too much action to get tired of it.
Dark Shadows (2012)
Worth watching just for Eva Green haunting Johnny Depp
It's a fun vampire movie if you're not expecting too much, plus you get to enjoy good performances from the amazing Helena Bonham Carter, Eva green and Michelle Pfeiffer, and also watch Johnny Depp (Barnabas Collins) feeling mostly uncomfortable and wanting to get rid of Eva Greens (Angelique Bouchard) stalking.
Bird Box (2018)
People nowadays need everything handed to them, no imagination at all...
Unfairly bad rated. People tent to question very strictly, and usually hate something that is overhyped and not perfect, so that's the reason for all these very unfair critics, but people that rate this movie with ones and threes can't be taken seriously. Finally a thriller with no stupid jump scares and unbelievable monsters. A survival movie that keeps you on your toes till the end, makes you care and worry about it's protagonists, and has a good relieving ending that pays off. There where some predictable moments sure, but that's not necessary a deal breaker. I liked that it has the good old fashioned thriller agony and build up, and no easy answers, that people nowadays can't appreciate because they are spoiled with most of today's thrillers. People think a movie owes you answers and beliefs. NO IT DOESN'T! I like the idea of me having to use my imagination, like in the good old Hitchcock movies.
