The Fabelmans (2022)
A really "interesting" movie that gives you a perspective in spielberg's own life
I'll be honest, this is not exactly a review but my own personal experience with the movie. The movie is about spielberg's motivation about making the movies & simultaneously a portrail of his family's disintegration. For what it's worth, the movie is well made with descent acting for the most part. Especially the father's character is the stand out. Maybe we are not supposed to dissect the plot too much, but the movie is supposed to be about spielberg afterall! The whole point is to find the motivation behind speilberg's obsession with making movies. (At least I didn't know) Apparantly it's because he always saw movie making as a coping mechanism from the horrors of his own life! So here are my observations:
The movie depicts how unstable the family is right from the beginning. We have the father's bestfriend character who is very close to the family, and especially the mother. Everyone is almost oblivious of this fact other than the grandma. Then the tragedy stucks (grandma's death) and the mother's character almost descends to madness. She literally drives a car into a tornado with her kids inside. Her escape from all of this? Infidelity. When the father gets a new opportunity in a different state, they all move together including the "friend" of the father. When the son (spielberg) figures out what is going on because of what he ended up recording on his tape, he confronts the mother. The mother does show signs to make things right & the family again moves to a different state because of the father's new job opportunity. Now the mother didn't want to leave the friend behind (because the obvious reasons) But they agree to move once the mother finds out that their son knows what's going on. Now it's interpreted in the movie that the mother never actually loved the father or have fallen out of love ever since & now loves the friend character instead. And what's baffeling is that she's apparently going crazy: she tries getting into therapy but it doesn't work. She gets a monkey & names it after the character she was cheating with. The family eventually splits up & mother takes all the children exept steven with her. While steven is left with the father. There are so many problems here like how everything gets sorted out ones she goes back to the character she was cheating with!
There's so much wrong with this plot, especially how a character who is unfaithful (for whatsoever reason) gets away with it. The movie has a problematic line: You don't owe your life to anyone. Yes you do. To your family. And this perticular statement comes into a bad light with the infidelity: the mother decided to be with someone else while still being married because she thought that it's okay as long as it's what your heart wants.
Now my most interesting observation after watching the movie. This is something I didn't know about spielberg before watching this movie. (This information is not given in the movie itself): he had an affair with future wife Kate Capshaw while still being married to his first wife. Infidelity ruins families, he knew from his own experience but he did it anyways in real life! Maybe he feels guilty (I hope as a fan of his movies) And maybe this movie is supposed to show that truth to his audience.
But, the movie ends with a credit "For Leah". That certainly was baffeling to me. His father deserves recognition for trying to save his family, not the mother who was unfaithful (while she was still married & not divorced). Maybe the point of the movie was to make us dislike the mother's character. Because I certainly did.
PS - I lowered my score for the movie after learning about speilberg's own afffairs & I'm gonna be unapologetic about it.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
A beautiful* parody of superhero movies
Well when I say beautiful, I'm not exaggerating. Can't believe they actually went to space to film this movie. The most immersive experience I've ever had at the teatres. Almost like I was travelling into the space myself.
Now, on a serious note, this is a pretty bad movie. To describe it correctly: all of the thor movies have this theatrical bits in them. They are supposed to be a fun parody of the characters. It seems they decided to create the whole movie around this idea which is: thor love & thunder.
1) Visuals: the visuals are pretty bad right from the begining. You can tell that they're using green screen in every scene even if you are not deliberately trying to look for it. Can't believe that the movie could look this bad given it's sky-high budget.
2) Acting: Christian Bale is descent in the role, but his screentime is too short for being the main villain. Chris hemsworth has portrayed the character of Thor in a much better way in the previous few movies. In this movie, it seems like not too much interested in the role. Right from the beginning of the movie, you can pretty much tell from his face that he probably doesn't want to be there. Credit where it's due, he's in a very good shape. Rest of the cast is just fine.
3) Screenplay & tone of the movie: probably the weakest point of the movie. Thor ragnarok was a good 3rd movie in the series, that pretty much saved the thor series & made thor one of the most popular character in the giant MCU family. Part of the reason was the good humor & making thor a badass of a character while still having a serious tone. This movie doubles down on the humor aspect but the quality of the humor has gone down so significantly. The movie seems like a parody of itself. Most of the jokes don't
4) Narration of the movie is pretty bad. It's supposed to be over the top I guess. But it turned out to be pretty silly & cringe. I can't understand why they went forward with it.
Overall, it not only is a bad movie, but also not entertaining even a little bit, to justify watching it just for fun. If you're a die-hard MCU fan, you could watch it once I guess. But even at that I hardly doubt if anyone would unironically want to rewatch it.
Glass Onion (2022)
It's not a murder mystery, but a mystery comedy
If you're going into this movie with an expectiation of a serious murder mystery plot in mind, you'll most likely be disappointed. Nothing wrong with that creative decision but here are a few points that I think didn't land very well:
i) the tone of the movie is marginly different from the first knives out movie. First knives out had comedic bits but they were subtle dark comedy moments. This one goes full on over the top to the point that it doesn't take itself very seriously.
Ii) the comedy bits doesn't quite land half the time. (expecially the pandemic humor with masks, among us, etc.)
iii) some plot points are utterly ridiculous: villain burning the paper napkin, diary stopping the bullet, hiding spot of red letter, etc.)
I might be sounding too negative about the movie, but I'd be wrong if I said that the movie was not fun. Mostly all of the characters are good & likable. The movie set itself was really interesting, the whole glass mansion in the middle of a greek island. Dave bautista's character was the stand out for me. Also, benoit blanc is a good character that I wish to see more in the future. Movie started a bit slowly but got really interesting in the middle. But the end obviously was silly & extravagent. But I'm guessing that would be divisive, and that is the source of most of the criticism towards the movie.
Overall the movie is fun & entertaining if you don't take it too seriously. For classic murder mystery readers, go with a realistic expectations. And for general audience, it's a recommended movie for "Netflix & chill" type of night.
The Cuphead Show! (2022)
It's made for kids
First of all, know that you most probably might not be the target audience for this show.
The game on which the show is an old school arcade style game, which I'd guess would appeal more to the 80s-90s kids. But the game is definately not meant to be played or targeted towards a younger audience. While this show is apparently made for kids. I guess anyone who has played the game would be disappointed because of this, while the kids for whom the show is made for would not have heard much the game's background. From marketing perspective it looks like a wasted opportunity. So coming to the show after having played the game, I was disappointed.
Coming to the actual show, it's not bad by any means. There are ~10 min self-contained episodes with little adventures from cuphead & mugman. The art style is gorgeous. Soundtrack feels fairly appropriate to the direction and fun. It reminds of the old school Cartoon network style shows. Character designs & voice acting are on point. The show is actually very nicely made.
If you're coming from the game, i) know that you're not the intended viewer; ii) it has an alternate storyline than that of the game. Definately a recommended show for kids.
