The Imitation Game (2014)
Benedict Cumberbatch
The Imitation Game contained, not only an interesting and organized plot, based of real events, but was also blessed by the extraordinary performance of Benedict Cumberbatch, who never seizes to surprise me. The way he brightly plays his particular personality and intelligence, in order to solve the enigma, is absolutely stunning. It is definitely also to praise the development the producers, and again Cumberbatch, put into the character of Alan Turing, what was indispensable, since he is an important historic figure, that brought a lot of innovation and progress to mankind. To summarize, the Imitation Game is an amusing way to learn how our society evolved to where it is now, and to see the brilliant "Sherlock" in action once again.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Innovative Cinematic Experience
Awarded with the Oscar for best motion picture of the year, Birdman is an innovative experience, most well-known for the originality of how the scenes are filmed. It is, in fact, to congratulate the producers and the whole crew, for working hard, in order to manage to introduce to the viewers, a complete new way of watching a movie. Due to this innovative system, it is possible to feel like the living characters following the plot. The performances of Michael Keaton, Emma Stonne and Edward Norton were absolutely stunning, since they managed to brightly transmit their emotions and greatest wishes in the theater-business. Overall it was a great movie, which needs a proper interpretation for a better understanding of its deeper meaning, and the world of acting and becoming a celebrity, that most of us don't know. Although I'm not totally sure it deserves the Oscar it got, considering that 2015 was a great cinematic year (Interstellar, The Imitation Game, and the list goes on...), Birdman definitely deserves some recognition, and therefore the score of "8 out of 10".
Whiplash (2014)
J. K. Simmons
"Whiplash" is no more nor less than a movie worthy of at least one Oscar award. If not for best Sound Mixing, than at least (and especially this one) for best actor in a supporting role. I rate the movie as a "8 out of 10", and no, it's not because of its argument, that is not (AT ALL) original, or even the great role Miles Teller plays. It's definitely because of the great, the one and only, J.K. Simmons. The whole point of the movie, and the reason why it is getting such good ratings, is the adrenaline that it makes the audience feel. The viewers feel what the main character feels, and are excited about his musical journey with his teacher, and that only happens, due to the role of Simmons. He makes us fear him, and that is a great thing in a movie like this. After seeing this masterpiece I looked for information on this actor, and it surprised me a lot, seeing that the "monster" he has shown to us in "Whiplash", is in fact a very nice and interesting person. Congratulations to the production, and to all the present actors, but the merit this movie deserves is due to him. It is also to mention the great sound mixing and absolutely outstanding role played by Teller. The only weak aspect is the ending. Although it left me thinking a while about what his future could look like, it's a but empty, and a movie like this deserves an ending that people would remember for a long time, which wasn't totally managed.
Daredevil: A Cold Day in Hell's Kitchen (2016)
Too many unanswered questions
As a season finale for a great season, which introduced many new characters, that are still in development, it managed to keep up with the high expectations I had. In the beginning of the episode, the audience gets informed, that everything evil in Hell's Kitchen is coming together, and trying to make the city fall apart. Matthew and Elektra know their place and job very well, in what comes to save their city, and early on the episode prepare for the final battle to come. It might seem too forced, that "The Hand" kidnapped everyone once saved by Daredevil, however It brought a necessary energy to the episode, and made the one expected scene in the finale happen, that is Daredevil saving Karen once again. Honestly, I expected her to find out his identity the moment he broke into the building, but it gets solved when Matt reveals himself to her near the ending of the episode, in a way, the viewer can't see her full reaction to it. Last but not least: (thats right, I have to talk about it) ELEKTRA DIED! How is this possible? Personally, I did not at all expect this to happen, since she seemed like a character that would get a lot more development throughout the series. Well, although that tragedy happened, right before The Punisher kicks in with an incredible appearance in order to help the Daredevil, the last shot shown to us is Elektra's body caught in the strange coffin of "The Hand". This cliff-hanger leaves us thinking, if she might return or not, and if so, is she going to be on Matthew 's side and run away with him as promised, or will the return cost some sort of transformation to her personality? Due to the plot line and massive awesomeness and great scenes with all main characters, this finale deserves definitely a "9 out of 10".
"See you around, Red"
The Revenant (2015)
Don't believe the hype
The Revenant was a long awaited movie, not only due to the special effects and panoramic pictures, but also due to the famous role the actor Leonardo DiCaprio plays in it. A strong hype was noticed coming from the fans of DiCaprio, especially when considering, that after many great roles, and 5 nominations, he never got the chance of giving an "Oscar-Winner Speech". Personally, I am a huge fan of DiCaprio, and his work through the last years. He is, in fact, one of the actors that have made nothing but powerful roles, that stick in the viewer's minds. "The Revenant" hasn't failed when it comes to give him a role, that people will remember, but unfortunately not as the best one. In the movie, Leonardo DiCpario plays Hugh Glass, an American frontiersman in the 19th century, who gets severely attacked by a bear, and then left to die by his expedition-colleagues. After this disaster, the remaining 2 hours of the movie consist in Glass trying to get back to civilization by himself, and seeking revenge for his son, who got murdered by Fitzgerald, played by the great Tom Hardy. Although quite original, the plot is extremely empty, which leaves the audience in a constant boredom throughout the length of the film. Despite the fact that DiCpario (and the great Tom Hardy) managed to come up with the expectations for their acting, "The Revenant" wasn't a movie that should get rewarded with a "Best Actor Oscar", not because DiCaprio played Hugh Glass badly, but simply because the whole journey he made by himself, didn't require much of him, mainly due to the lack of dialogue. To summarize, it was a well developed movie, but the 12 nominations it got, were definitely not fair.
Daredevil: .380 (2016)
The war is coming
After Frank Castle got trapped in an exploding ship and Claire quit her job at the Metro General Hospital, it becomes clear that the big final war between the Daredevil and "The Hand" is coming. In this episode, once more, we get a closer look to the operation that might bring people back to life, and to the heroin operation leaded by "Blacksmith", the man behind the assassination of the Punisher's family. This episode also connects the show with the first season, by introducing M. Gao into the operation. The final scene indicates a big disagreement between Stick and Elektra, which adds Elektra to the list of main characters in danger, to join Frank Castle and Karen Page. Overall it was a good episode, which follows a great storyline, and leaves the viewers at the edge of their seats, while awaiting the final confrontation.
Daredevil: The Man in the Box (2016)
An audacious ending
The true goal of "The Hand" organization gets finally revealed, although it's not that satisfactory after all. Daredevil was, since the beginning, a superhero series, that instead of the cliché unrealistic action, contains a strong plot line starring everyday problems that might happen in real life in court of law. Despite the villains and epic, but unrealistic fights (that are essential to the series (that is not the point)), Daredevil always managed to mix the "hero-element" with law tricks and real life "problem-solving". This episode was a disappointment in that matter, because the viewers find out, that "The Hand" is using its victims, to drain their bloods, and transform them into killer "zombies". I don't dislike that idea 100%, since I personally watch (and enjoy very much doing so) the AMC's series "The Walking Dead", which features zombies dominating the world. The problem of this episode, and with it the heading of this season, is not the fact that there start existing supernatural creatures like zombies, but the context in which they're introduced. I enjoyed the episode, and will continue watching the show, but the idea that "undead people" start walking around, and that there is now the possibility of reviving people, makes me fear what the once outstanding Daredevil-Show might become. However, I still mark this episode with a "7", due to the spectacular developing of the plot and Daredevil's darker character. It is also to praise the twist, that has been brought to the Punisher's storyline, because it slowly leads the audience back to the "Frank of earlier this season", and pushes him away from the assassin we met the last few episodes.
Daredevil: Seven Minutes in Heaven (2016)
One of the best this season
This was the episode of the second season of this series, where the thought "It's happening, now it has begun" came to my mind. It was after seeing the huge twist on Wilson Fisk's intentions, and The Punisher taking down all the prisoners in cell block A, that the season got my full 100% attention. This episode we get to see the dramatic heading of the "Nelson & Murdock" firm, and the friendship of Matthew and Foggy drastically falling apart. It's an episode that serves well as the climax of the whole "2nd season action" that has happened, and is still to come. After we see Frank Castle's future plans with the villain Wilson Fisk, and see him released desperate to seek revenge for the death of his family, it's only left to discover where his path will cross Daredevil's. In the last minutes of the episode, a huge cliffhanger containing new information for the new plot line with Stick and Elektra is given to the viewer. I mark this episode with a "9", because of all its great aspects, and not only give it a "10" because of the still very vague reasons of Fisk when releasing The Punisher. I look forward to the next episode, on which the public will eventually discover, if there is, or not, a way of bringing people back to life.
Inception (2010)
Inception - A cinematic Treasure
I have seen this movie recently, 6 years after its release, and the reason for it are the great reviews online and its very high score on IMDb. At first the action seems quite confusing and without a logic order, what quickly gets solved in the first 20 minutes. The original and well-structured plot keeps the attention of all viewers until the end of the movie. Despite the fact, that the innovative form of "reality-dreaming" is very well displayed, all the characters, specially Cobb, are nicely introduced, and the way his back story gets developed throughout the action is outstanding. An important fact to mention and praise is the literal way the functioning of the human mind gets displayed, what can be seen when the projections of the subconscious start starring at the intruder, as a sign of "trespassing" the mind. After the great experience this cinematic treasure was for me and for my family, and the tremendous role the impeccable Leonardo DiCaprio plays, there is no other choice, than marking it with a score of 10, so it gets more attention from lovers of a thrilling adventure in the human mind.
Interstellar (2014)
An Incredible Space-Journey filled with great acting and emotional moments
Interstellar is, with no doubt, my favorite movie of all times. Christopher Nolan managed to control the viewer's attention throughout the whole 3-hour-experience with incredible special effects and an attractive Plot line. I've read some negative critics about this movie, which are based on the possible "irreality" displayed in the 5 dimensional world Cooper gets placed to connect with Murph. For a person to watch and properly enjoy this film, it is 100% necessary that the person in matter puts her whole attention into it for the total length of the movie. It's, in fact, hard to understand some parts in the movie, beyond the Father- Daughter-Relationship, but it totally pays off. I recommend, not only "Scy-fy fans", but everyone to watch this movie and appreciate a possible reality incredibly displayed by the "movie- artist" Christopher Nolan, that never fails when it comes to surprise movie-lovers with original and well-structured stories.
Arrow: My Name Is Oliver Queen (2015)
The reason i stopped watching Arrow
This Season-Finale episode of the beloved series "Arrow", is with no doubt the worst i have ever experienced. During this season i noticed the many flaws of the show, since it began being a cliché-superhero-series, instead of the quality show i enjoyed so much for the first seasons. The whole action is based on the love between felicity and oliver, what bothers me, because it's a cheap strategy the producers used to get audience from an uninterested public, which spends its precious free-time watching basic and plot-hole-filled TV-series.
First let me get started with the name of the episode "My Name is Oliver Queen". Now many of you must be wondering "What does this guy mean? It's a great name!". And that is exactly the problem of it! That is exactly what i thought, and that is the problem. The arrow producers have chosen to make an episode with an epic name and a basic plot line to attract young viewers to it, when the matter-in-fact is, that it was a disaster, In every way. The glorious Almighty R'as as Ghul, feared by every assassin, was very easily killed by Oliver, and the famous scene in an airplane, where Oliver screams "My Name is Oliver Queen", happens too early in the episode with no sense at all included. To put it in a nutshell, this season, and this episode in specific, were a complete disaster. Since Felicity shooting people and saving Oliver in the "Atom-Suit", to accelerated plot lines like the transformation of Oliver (that didn't AT ALL work out), this was a series to forget for me. And this episode is the reason i stopped watching Arrow, and created an IMDb account, so that I can state my opinion about this disaster and vote it with a "1".
