Golden Boy (1939)
Wow - the actors' ages are really out of whack!!
As I was watching this movie for the first time on TCM the other night, I kept thinking the actor who played Mr. Bonaparte (Joe's dad) sounded awfully familiar. Imagine how shocked I was when I saw the credits and learned that it was Lee J. Cobb under that heavy makeup and Italian accent. I seemed to recall that he wasn't much older than William Holden, and according to the IMDb listings, he was born in 1911, making him just six years older than his "son," William Holden, who was born in 1917. But the real kicker is that Barbara Stanwyck, who was admittedly supposed to be the "older woman" to Joe, is a whole 11 years older - making her older than her boyfriend's father!! Doesn't it seem odd that the producers would have chosen a 28-year-old actor to play the role of the Italian "Papa" in this movie? Or am I just being picky?
Funny Lady (1975)
Come on - I loved it!!
I have fond memories of this movie, and I thought the soundtrack was wonderful! James Caan gives a sweet, understated performance in the face of Hurricane Barbra. The costumes are gorgeous, the storyline amusing, and the music fabulous. I'd encourage everyone to give this movie a try! Fanny Brice is a fascinating character, and Barbra really captures her spirit. What I liked most was the way Billy Rose woos her into a personal and professional relationship. He can be awfully charming when he wants to be! Barbra looks great in this movie - very chic and glamorous. Her fans will love it, and people who don't always appreciate her may enjoy other aspects of the film. Give it a chance!!
BUtterfield 8 (1960)
A truly awful story
I just finished watching BUtterfield 8 and feel like I need to take a shower so I won't feel so dirty! What a truly God-awful story, told with truly awful acting. Lawrence Harvey is incredibly repulsive! Are we really supposed to believe that both Elizabeth Taylor and the wonderful Dina Merrill would fall in love with this lunkhead? The final scene, where he comes home and tells his wife what a good person Liz's character was, is stomach-turning. What normal, self-respecting wife would stand there and listen to that kind of pathetic drivel? I'm sorry I wasted my time - those are two hours I'll never get back!! My only consolation is that I didn't pay any money to see it.
