Grief and Rage Personified
11 November 2022
Summary then Analysis:

"A White, White Day" follows Ingimundur (brilliantly portrayed by Icelandic actor Ingvar Sigurdsson), a police officer seemingly on leave after the death of his wife. He attempts to fill his time by reconstructing a farm house for his daughter. This turns out to be a Sisyphean task that mirrors his grief for his wife. He also spends his days with his young granddaughter who would jokingly remind him that he is second best to only his late wife.

Ingimundur seems to be in a purgatorial state, living day to day until he finds a video camera in one of his late wife's leftover boxes. Having thought he has found a token of everlasting memory, he is shocked to find a tape that will cal into question their entire relationship.

"A White, White Day" is very much a character study of a man dealing with the grief of a loved one. However, it does not follow a traditional film's storyline. Not time wise, but what we expect.

American films have taught us to follow our protagonist as they pursue a clear cut goal enduring consequences within in a narrow time frame. International directors often reject this notion and we see this with Pálmason's film. The audience becomes spectators to a bipartisan view of a man's attempt to deal with grief. The lens very seldom follows or mirrors what our emotional viewpoint may be at the time. Simply standing back and allowing us to view the product of grief and male machismo. Until... it erupts.

Ingimundur, having doubts about the validity of his relationship or perhaps merely tilting at windmills, partakes a journey to discover the truth behind his relationship. Ingimundur's odyssey is not unlike that of Odysseus': he runs into several obstacles, usually making a conceited or reactionary decision that should only come back to haunt him. All the while building and demolishing his own faith in his relationship. In addition, beginning a journey of knowledge only to find himself in the place where he had started. Knowing it for the first time.

The film ends, in what is perhaps it's most brilliant scene, with Ingimundur sitting on the couch as Memories by Leonard Cohen plays. The raw emotion hits upon all wavelengths he has felt culminating in self recognition of his own grief and destruction.

"A White, White Day" is a tremendous slow-burn drama about how many men bury their grief in an attempt to stay strong for their loved ones. Using unique art direction and long takes, this Icelandic film is a sure pleasure for those with the patience and appreciation for thematic cinema.

Cinematic Patience
15 October 2018
What is perhaps one of the best beginnings to a film helps lay the foundation for the rest of this film. Janos is brought to the center of the room being told that, "it is time." From here Janos begins a remedial science lesion on the cosmos. He begins by using a drunken bar patron as the sun. Then another as the earth. Finally, another as the moon. He explains the rotation of the three celestial bodies in what appears to be a drunken daze. However, Janos stop the rotation of the bar patrons and begins his monologue. Janos' language changes; the music resonates throughout the scene. Janos gives the patrons an allegorical tale of the eclipse; stating the sense of unrest that the animals and people experience as this sudden change shadows the earth. However, the chaos is only momentary. Order is soon restored. Shortly after his speech, Janos and the drunken patrons begin to dance at which point the barkeep kicks Janos out of the bar. In a rather ominous tone, Janos exclaims to the barkeep that "it is not over." I summarize the beginning of this spectacular film because the magnificent Bela Tarr has laid out everything we need to know in these short 11 minutes to understand his work. We are told that the story is going to be an allegory; an allegory of great chaos brought upon a population of the ignorant (The eclipse frightening the animals natural order of life). We are told that most everything in the film will be symbolic (The earth, sun, and moon acting as natural life with disorder). We are given the weather conditions and the dereliction of the town which further sets the tone of the film. Finally, we are given the pace of the film. Patience is needed. A film captured in a mere 39 shots in what feels archaic black and white (Again acting as a symbol for the Post WWII desolate town and its intoxicated population). The film follows our protagonist, Janos, as he meanders through his life playing an oxymoronic archetype of the wise fool. His small Hungarian town is awakened from their inexorable lassitude by the arrival of a circus attraction. This attraction is a giant stuffed whale and accompanying the whale is The Prince; a mysterious and shamanistic disturbance to the town's feeling of unrest and neglect. The Prince then capitalizes on the ignorance of the town, leading them to form a mob and storm the hospital. Janos is forced to play the unifier and bring the town out of the eclipse. Tarr has created literature in motion with this masterpiece. Harmonies is more of an experience than anything else. I watched this film maybe 10 years ago and am just now writing this review. The film resonates and challenges our ability to interpret. It is almost like we as viewers would wish to have a SparkNotes page for this film, so we could understand the symbolic nature of the whale, the prince, and so much more. Yet, we are given no interpretations; just as I will leave you with no further explanations. Just a recommendation to find this film and let patience truly be the greatest virtue of them all.

Pure beauty
16 January 2008
Films lately have been going down hill. This year though has brought the films back to where they have been in past years. There Will Be blood is the story of an oil man who buys up land from numerous families in a small town with hopes of getting rich. Along with his son H.W., Daniel faces problems with the town religious freak ( wonderfully done by Paul Dano). Daniel day lewis gives the best performance in the past 10 years. This is a story of greed, religion, and family. So many scenes that will have you in awe. There Will Be Blood is going to have trouble being recognized due to the other films this year that are getting so much hype. Definitely one of the finest films I have seen in the past few years. highly recommended.

The Greatest Movie Ever Made!
19 November 2007
A Clockwork Orange is the greatest movie ever made. It is Stanley Kubrick's best film. A Clockwork Orange and The Shinning are both awesome movies but i have to go with A Clockwork Orange. This movies is disturbing and mean but for some reason watching I had a smile on my face because it is so good. This movie will keep you guessing until the end. The strong rape part you should skip because it goes on forever. That part is still haunting me and IT WILL HAUNT YOU! from the first twenty seconds I knew the movie was going to be the greatest movie ever made. My parents had to stop watching it but I watched it over and over again. Stanley Kubrick is a mastermind and will be remembered for all his films. The Shinning is also one of the greatest movies ever made. I told my friends about the movie and they don't even want to think about it. The acting was great. I can't believe this didn't win best picture. I thought the Malcolm McDowell should have been nomatied but oh well. A clockwork Orange is so crazy i watched it three times in one night and the movie is like two and half hours long. YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS MOVIE! I don't recommend it for all but all the guys who want to see boobs and violence watch this movie

All of a Sudden people start 'jumping" into trains, but there is actually somebody pushing them. All of a sudden the main character has romance when he falls for the train operators daughter who is dressed up in a bear costume.Everything comes together in a wonderful film .Young director Antal mixes action, mystery, and romance all into one great film. Kontroll has great character development and one of the best story lines of all time.

Sunshine (2007)

One of the top Sci- Fi movies in years!!!!!!!!
12 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Sunshine is a great film about a crew of eight sent to the sun in the distant future to jump start the sun. It contains great acting lead by Cillian Murphy and Rose Byrne, with good acting by Chris Evans. With a great script and good directing the Sci- Fi genre has been brought back. Cool quotes like when the former captain of the icarus 1 says ' I talked to God for 7 years. He told me to take us all to heaven", and "So if you look up and it is a particularly beautiful day. We might have made it", gets you thinking. It really didn't look like a Sci-Fi movie until the former captain came back as some sort of flame person, and started to kill the people, but you have to realize that we will never be able to go to the sun or anywhere near it, that is good sci-fi. With hints of the movie The Abyss( top 10), Sunshine is one of my favorite films in a while.

Same Thing Happened to me last time I flew Delta
29 August 2006
Snakes is a good movie because is it original. Star Samuel L. Jackson really hit it on the money when he decided to take this role because if he didn't then nobody else would have. it is a pure Samuel Jackson role of a tough guy cop who saves everyone from an unreal situation that nobody else would have gotten near. Snakes make me excited and grossed out at the same time. There is a scene where a snake bites a girl in the breast and a man in the penis and I couldn't help but just laugh and then fell disgusted at the same time.I overall fell that snakes earned a perfect score on the rating board because it is about motherfu**** snakes on a motherfu**** plane and whenever there is another movie like that I will be sure to review it and compare it. I hope it makes a lot of money and Samuel wins an Oscar or something ridiculous like that.

People with an encephalitis epidemic awake. When they receive a new drug only to notice that it is a lot different of a life when your trapped in a hospital.
11 November 2005
It will reach out and grab you. Robert De Niro, an Robin Williams both give stellar performancesin this sad movie. It shows you how to respect life, and respect your health. It shows you what people with an encephalitis epidemic are really like. When these people are given a drug they realize better then we do to respect life for the little things like being able to"go out for a walk alone". The little things. People giving money to help these people is just what anybody would have done. Although you will most likely be crying at the end of the movie, Robin gives a speech that explains why life is great, and we need to love the little things. Altghough it has an anticlimax, it is still worth the two hours.

A weatherman get's a job offer in New York, but before he goes he has to patch up family affairs.
10 November 2005
Great acting by Caine and Cage. Very well Directed. It is wery depressing but you have to look over the fact that life is depressing. This is a movie about what happens in life when something good happens and then there is always something else to drag you down. I believe it had it's low points but, if you look past the fact of that you will find a pretty entertaining movie. Cage shows another Oscar worthy performance while he takes care of his dying father,Caine, who also gives and Oscar worthy performance. Gore Verbinsky the dirctor of The Pirate of the Caribbean and the ones soon to come shows his power an the screen as wheel.I give this about ***1/2 out of ****. I really recommend it.
