Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Great imagery for a typical movie
There are plenty of things to like about this movie: lots of alien races, interesting dimension mechanics, eye candy, political intrigue. Unfortunately, the storytelling comes up a little short, and makes for a film full of tropes, cliché one-liners, and little character development. It makes me wonder if this film would have benefitted from being split into two movies instead, if only to draw out the lore more and develop the relationships between the characters better.
It's a pity that Rihanna's character was given so little spotlight, especially since she was one of the more interesting ones in the film. It's also a shame that the other more interesting details were bypassed and/or given little attention: the tech, the environments, the other side characters that would have been cool to learn about. (I'd have thought that with a city of a 1,000 planets they'd at least highlight more than a handful.)
Good to watch for the imagery, but just that. Just don't think too much about the plot holes and missing details, because thinking too much would likely spoil the effect.
Cubo mágico (2010)
The simple story of one man's life told through a Rubik's cube
Cubo Mágico starts with an old man. He's lying in a hospital bed, with only a Rubik's cube in his hands. He plays with the cube as the machines start to pulsate to the beat of his heart. He makes a final turn, and he falls into his pillows. After a while, we see the same man, albeit younger, with the same cube. What does the Rubik's cube mean for the man? Why does he keep trying to solve it?
This curious film is a journey into a man's life, with one special ingredient to tie together: a simple Rubik's cube that may have magic sprinkled on it. With a few turns and exasperated breaths, this film shows us glimpses of a man's future and present, as well as the ever-there frustration of solving a possibly unfathomable mystery. Either way, this film beautiful in its simplicity, and says more than the few words its characters utter with each twist of the cube.
Marisa (2009)
One man's journey on finding the woman he loves, while fighting the changes that happen along the way
Marisa is about a woman. Or, at least according to the man who loves her, a woman who is also several women, depending on the place and time. He goes about looking for the Marisa he loves, only to discover that she's changed into someone else again. As time goes by, it's getting harder and harder to find Marisa. Will he ever be able to find her again?
This film is a curious tale is about a man in search for his one and only Marisa, only to find her constantly changing. With a simple monologue, psychologists' perspectives, and hundreds of women shown in just three minutes, we rediscover the journey of one man and one woman who are trying to make sense of the changes that happen to every person.
El columpio (1993)
Fun short comedy about strangers and love at first sight
In El Columpio (English: The Merry Go Round), a man and a woman are waiting for the train in a deserted station. Through their thoughts, we find out that they seem interested in one another, despite being complete strangers. They try to show their intent, but their signals seem to be misread. Will they ever be able to share their feelings for one another?
This film is a comedic but quite real take into what goes on in the heads of people when they find someone they really like. It's funny to watch the two give out signals that are missed or totally misread, but I suppose that is just how it is in the game of love. All in all, El Columpio is a fun film about the hesitations and ridiculous things we do to get the attention of someone we find interesting.
