The Believer (2021)
More like an off beat thriller.
To say its a horror film is excessive as there is more tension and mystery than horror. Having said that Sophie Kargman does a really good job of being on the edge of deranged, although you're not quite sure.
I would say its more of a thriller with overtones. I think that we have become slightly insular to "horror" in films, so it needs to be really scary to be classed as a horror film.
I am not saying that some might find it horrific in places but I am sure that most won't. This doesn't detract from the off beat strangeness of the film as you are dragged along by the storyline.
Aiden Bristow works well as a believable character and you do feel for him and yet there is that nagging feeling in the back of your mind about him.
This is one of those films that if you don't watch it all you won't get it.
I found it very watchable and wasn't disappointed but I would have liked a little more depth to the plot.
100 Feet (2008)
A horror that holds it together well.
The storyline was good and it did deliver. Most horror films tend to be laughable but this one wasn't. Good plot and a acceptable efforts from the actors kept your interest to the end.
The special effects were really good and added depth to the film. Some of it was quite gruesome but just enough to make it work. A very good use of jump scares unlike some films that go over the top so ends up not being scary at all. It's not a fully blown horror, it's a horror thriller. This film is well worth a look. Badly made horror films give this genre a bad name but I think this is one of the good ones without going over the top and becoming a comedy.
Horizon Line (2020)
Watchable but no surprises.
The first thing that I noticed was the start of the film was very choppy. It didn't flow and I started to lose interest. This could have been made for TV. We didn't get an initial build to flesh out the characters and all seemed a little weak as did the plot. It plodded along with a couple of good highlights but again it was fairly obvious what was going to happen and the actors did the best they could with the unbelievable lifeless script and the limited location.
The only thing that was good was the CGI. I assume the stunts were done in a studio and not 5000 ft in the air.
I was hoping for more but unfortunately it didn't happen for me. A better start to the film and more actors involved in the plane would have made the film more substantial. Too much looking out of the windows at empty blue water and not enough interaction with the actors. I don't recommend it unless its on TV and you have some time to kill.
Kill Switch (2017)
It was like watching series 1 episode 4 of Kill Switch. Spoiler Alert!
There will be people out there who will relate to this and probably enjoy the meanderings of the writer trying his best to stretch the basic story line out for the duration of the film. It all could have been done better in 30 minutes or less. It all seemed very flat and although the CGI in places worked really well and the general idea was good there was just something missing. It lacked excitement and real emotion. The script was poor and predictable. 5 minutes into the film and you knew what the end would be.Most of the film was shot as a POV visor view with a HUD stating the obvious. I was wondering if this was based on a game as it looked very first person shooter (a bad one!) Anyway if you have nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon, then find something, anything, just don't waste your time on this. I gave this film a 2 just for the CGI
London Has Fallen (2016)
USA saves the world action from start to finish.
The only thing that made me watch this film is Mr. Butler and he did deliver. As usual he was the center of the action from start to finish and he did what he does best. The CGI was impressive and I couldn't work out what was real and what was CGI which was a plus. That in it'self was worth watching this film. However, I found it slightly insulting. I won't go into detail about that as others have covered that topic but just to say Gerrard is Scottish and not American, which gave the whole film a tongue-in-cheek feel. The same feel as Mel Gibson playing William Wallace in Braveheart- enough said right? Morgan Freeman did just enough but didn't stand out. If you like action films (which I do), like good CGI (which I do) and love the acting abilities of the greatest acting export of Scotland since Sean Connery then this film is for you. If you are sick to death of the USA solving all the wolds problems whilst sitting in an office somewhere in Washington full of monitors surrounded by faceless people in suits then you will be wasting 99 minutes of your life.
Like most of these action films there will be a few of these ".... has fallen" sequels and like the 2013 prequel "Olympus....." if GB plays the lead I will watch.
Footnote. I think GB should play Bond. Move over Dan you have had your turn!
