Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
Kathryn Bigalow and Crew never fail to deliver.
Just watched Zero Dark Thirty. I was not disappointed. Kathryn Bigalow and team never fails to deliver cinema masterpieces, that not only intrigue but unnerve and enliven one's mind. For years Osama Bin Laden had evaded capture and had left a trail of utter devastation in his path. Zero Dark Thirty superbly portrays the work of those that eventually led to the dramatic demise of one of the worlds wanted men. Both technically and in plot delivery there are in my opinion very few flaws with this film. its not something that would suit Saturday night, family viewing, because there are numerous scenes that are somewhat disturbing.
I look forward to plenty more offerings from Bigalow, a very inspiring filmmaker who deserves every ounce of recognition. In the similar words of Simon Cowell, Zero Dark Thirty 100% yes!
Mauvaises fréquentations (1999)
Excellent, a must see movie for cinema fans....
As a filmmaker the stunning cinematography, direction and a great soundtrack that includes the brilliant Lene Marlin track Where I'm Headed, Mauvais Frequentations seemed to be grip me. Although the DVD I own has no subtitles and I understand very little French, I was mesmerised by the way the film flowed and unfolded before me. The actors suited there roles superbly, adding to the unsuspecting dramatic script.
Mauvais Frequentations portrays how people can be exploited and how situations can get totally out of hand, movies like this should be made more often. 'Fluffy bunny' cinema is great but has no meaning, at the end of a film one should be able to contemplate upon the scenes you have seen in the movie If someone is into alternative cinema, Mauvais Frequentations might be just the thing to get engrossed in one cold night.
White Noise (2005)
Disapppointing...
As a cinema fan White Noise was an utter disappointment, as a filmmaker the cinematography was pretty good, nicely lit, good camera work, reasonable direction. But as a film it just seamed as predictable as all the other 'so called' horror movies that the market has recently been flooded with. Although it did have a little bit of the 'chill factor' the whole concept of the E.V.O (Electronic Voice Phenomena) did'not seem believable. This movie did not explain the reasonings for certain occurrences but went ahead with them. The acting was far from mind blowing the main character portrayed no emotion, like many recent thriller/horror movies.
Definitely not a movie I will be buying on DVD and would not recommend anyone rushes out to see it.
Schpaaa (1998)
Great Movie
Schpaaa I researched this movie when I heard that Lene Marlin's Unforgivable Sinner had been used on the soundtrack. After a little difficulty I was able to get hold of the DVD from a website in the US. Having done so I was very glad I did and this will be a film that I will remember for a long time. Erik Poppe brings an amazing, mind blowing movie, the stunning cinematography, tight, fast editing and superb soundtrack kept me mesmerised from beginning to end. Schpaaa is probably one of the best films I have seen in a long time.
As a filmmaker myself I don't normally like to comment on the 'plot' or 'storyline' in movies but Schpaaa's was an eye opening insight into underworlds and organised crime that is present all over the world. Schpaaa to me had a particularly dark, yet not over dramatised feel to it.
Erik Poppe is a credit to the Norwegian film industry and I hope that he has more projects to come, I recommend to anyone who loves quality cinema to see Schpaaa, its amazing.
