Everything's Gonna Be Okay (2020)
Great work from Josh.... again...
Engaging from the get-go, most of the characters are likeable and the plot dripping with josh's acerbic wit. As we saw the progression in Josh's writing through the different seasons of "Please like me", we now see that further progressed here... and from the comments in the reviews here, it may have missed the mark with some viewers, they're certainly all talking about it... no such thing as bad publicity!
Joker (2019)
Tedious tome which seems to go forever
Two hours of my life I will never get back... the plot continues the Hollywood trend of poking fun at disabled people (and alienating those in the audience). Joaquin Phoenix clumsily over-acted throughout, his forced laugh becoming tiresome very quickly. In fact the whole film became quite tiresome.
Stark (1993)
It was great!
I read the book (along with many others Ben Elton wrote); I found the movie added to the experience; the acting was amazing as I recall.. (I have fond recollections of Bill Hunter and his character's dysfunctional family), killer cast and not too shabby production wise.. would love to be able to find this on a streaming service.. lol..
Yo soy la felicidad de este mundo (2014)
Fair attempt at a not-often seen genre
I am happiness on earth, currently showing on Netflix (at least in Australia) reminds me of many art-house films I saw in the late 90's, early 00's; either in an alternate cinema or on VHS from a better video library.
It does not surprise me that many reviewers here didn't "get it". It was slow-paced and as is the case with many art-house movies, the viewer is almost a voyeur looking into the different scenes and the lives of the different characters.
The party scene was euro-lush taking the viewer there and building in excitement with the music and lighting. The rest of the movie has moments of bleakness; settings include bathrooms with graffiti; lounge rooms set in warehouses etc; it was all visually interesting.
One disappointment was that the actor playing dancer Octavia could not dance. To be honest he probably gave it a red hot go; for the untrained ballet moves can be very difficult; but Octavia's solo show was pretty embarrassing to watch. Other dance scenes also seemed lacking in technique.
What also surprised me was how many reviewers missed that the lengthy "ménage et trios" scene in the middle was the director's movie (as the credits rolled afterwards). I was quite confused while watching it (not to mention being questioned by my other half about the "soft porn" I was watching...lol) but the penny dropped eventually.
All in all I found this a stimulating movie to watch; much of the interest lies in the supporting details. It has stayed with me since I watched it and probably will for some time.
Hurricane Bianca (2016)
Fabbo!
Hurricane Bianca is a rare gem of a movie; I had no idea what to expect and thrilled to see some familiar faces from RPDR. Yes, the movie was cheap and cheerful; but don't overthink it and it was a lot of rollicking fun. You had the good guys, bad guys, heroes and all order of movie characters.
Bianca was the star who shone brightest. As well she should.
The script was cheesy and screen play and "effects" delightfully amateurish; but that wasn't the point. There was something compelling about Hurricane Bianca and her story that kept us watching (well past my bedtime).
The humour was dry and (thankfully) avoided gutter innuendo sometimes incorporated in drag queen comedy. Bianca as the teacher was just terrific.
Definitely not for people who take themselves too seriously.
Down Under (2016)
Black comedy, all is not what it seems..
Black comedy (in my mind) is an art form where you know you shouldn't laugh because the subject is taboo but you can't help yourself . And so is "Down Under".
Taken in a literal sense this movie doesn't work; but let's face it, if you want to watch a doco on the Cronulla riots go watch a doco. No, this is far deeper than that and frankly I thought it one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time.
The two main groups in the movie are such exaggerated clichés they are a parody of themselves, the stoners are too stoned to do anything; the "Lebs" are too busy arguing with each other to get anything done. They are all so hopeless its funny. None of them could organize a beer in a brewery. None.
I felt sympathy for Evan the downs syndrome lad; but he delivers some of the best comedic moments of the movie. In fact Evan was about the only likable person in the movie; he deserved to be looked after better than he was.
One of the highlights was David Field playing full-on rice queen Vic; selling a gun to one of the "Leb" gang.. with x-rated gay porn on the tele while discussed the deal with the gang members... champagne comedy and a role I'd never picture David in..
If you are part of the PC fun police, or are really immature or have a low IQ please don't bother with Down Under; you won't get it (or worse still, you will take it seriously... believe me it is not serious; it is a massive p*ss-take on the parties to the Cronulla riots.. in case you haven't figured that out by now..).
If you enjoy a good black comedy/satire; you'll struggle to do better in the genre. This is no mainstream film, but its a 10/10 for me.
A Current Affair (1971)
Oh dear....
"ACA" is one of Australia's great comedies.
Where else can you tune in and get a daily dose of dodgy fridge repairmen, housos destroying housing commission property, white trash spewing vile hatred at each other, ads for the latest fad diet, celebrity suck-up pieces (usually when the celebrity is promoting their new album / film / perfume / whatever) and Brady Halls chasing yet another clueless crim (who are so stupid / broke they can't even get their faces pixelated) down the street while asking questions over-dubbed in the edit suite.
Tracy Grimshaw gets a special mention for reading this s h i t off the auto-cue while looking genuinely concerned and without out cracking up in laughter.
They have picked at the marginalized in our society and when SBS produced the excellent "Struggle Street" doco, they couldn't believe it wouldn't be an ACA hatchet job (which it wasn't). Yes, they have picked at the scab of racism and every other "ism" for that matter; and yes, some people believe them in a literal sense (?) If you have time, switch over to ACA to see what the housos are up to and who Brady Halls is chasing down the street tonight... I guess it's a bit like a traffic accident.. you know you shouldn't look but you can't turn away...
