Boulevard (2014)
Disappointing!
As a big fan of the late Robin Williams, I didn't even hesitate to pick up this film when I saw him on the cover. Unfortunately I was very disappointed by the plot line. It builds slowly as Nolan begins to take care in some way of a destitute young man named Leo but it ultimately goes nowhere. There is very little action, very little intensity and I ended up being bored.
On a positive note though, the acting was great by both Williams and the others. Their roles didn't seem fake or forced, but the backstory left me feeling as though I should've skipped this movie. It wasn't the worst I've ever seen but it's not one I would recommend.
My Old Lady (2014)
Surprisingly good!
I watched this film on a whim when nothing else in the available selection piqued my interest and I was pleasantly surprised! The film starts out a little slow but over time we learn more about the characters, their past and how they all ended up coming together in the present moment. During that time there were several surprises and curve balls thrown which rattles the characters but ultimately there is a good resolution.
This movie is one of those mildly funny feel-good movies that you'd tune into if you just want to sit back and relax casually. I must say that I was surprised to have enjoyed this movie so much since I'm usually an action and thriller movie type of person but I ended up liking this one so much that I bought the DVD! I hope that more people will open their minds to this movie and fully enjoy what it has to offer.
Disappeared (2009)
Haunting
Being a big fan of Investigation Discovery, I thought I would tune into this show along with my usual other viewings of the programs on this network. This show is probably the best on ID and should be much more popular than it is! The cases are truly haunting because we know that these are the real stories of real people and what makes it very personal is seeing their friends and family tell their own stories in their own words on the show.
This show has a little bit of everything: people that were found dead but nobody knows what happened to them, those that are still missing seemingly without a trace, and those who were found alive and got a happy ending. Some cases have their obvious suspects (without enough proof to prosecute them most of the time) while others are true mysteries. Each story is so different from the other but all are equally captivating.
The show does a great job at attempting to present all the known facts in the most unbiased manner possible while looking at all the different perspectives offered by law enforcement, the friends and families, etc. Some cases I've been so drawn into that I periodically look online for updates and while I don't really know if the show has solved any cases, I definitely think that it is a powerful tool to bring the reality of disappearances and kidnappings to your average viewer.
I look forward to watching the rest of the new season!
Unusual Suspects (2010)
You Wouldn't Expect...
Like most other shows on Investigation Discovery, this one draws you in right from the start. It's a real life "who done it?" Some of the cases, I never would've expected that the killer was the person it was, but others were somewhat obvious based on the narrative, however this show is definitely worth watching. It's also a reminder that even decades later, cases can still be solved and often are thanks to new technology and information.
I've literally binge-watched every season of this and I'm looking forward to another one because like most other true crime junkies out there, knowing that these are real stories are precisely what draw me in and get addicted to the show.
The Secret Life of Pets (2016)
Disappointing
I went to see this movie in theaters after seeing all the hype about it and it started out great but I was disappointed as the movie went on. Firstly, the story line wasn't really anything that hadn't been done before so you won't be seeing anything new. Since I'm not one who watches animated films very often (in fact this was the first I'd seen in years) I was expecting something a little different.
Furthermore I found that for an animated kids movie it was quite harsh. Sure, there are plenty of others and cartoon violence isn't anything new, but I was somewhat shocked at the amount of threats the rabbit made against humans and other pets and the whole underground street gang thing surprised me for this kind of movie. I found it to be rather excessive for the message behind this movie. It would've been much better if they had just toned it down a little bit.
If you're looking for a movie to watch with your kids, you can skip this one.
Lost (2004)
Lost
Spoilers!
I'm really not a fan of fantasy and I ended up watching this show on a whim after it was recommended to me and it didn't take long before I was completely hooked to the narrative! Right from the first episode, I was drawn into the mystery of the island but I really loved all the different characters from all backgrounds and all walks of life coming together. I could really relate to many of them and throughout the show you'll see flashbacks of their lives before being stranded on the island. Charlie was a rock star, Jack was a doctor, and Kate was wanted for murder! For me the third season was really my favorite since the survivors come into contact with the infamous "Others" on the island and the plot line takes an intense turn after another. I'm also a big fan of Andrew Divoff so it was a real treat to see him in this series too! We also see flash forwards about the future at some point and even some "flash sideways" showing what could've been and it's interesting to see how all of these people would've met anyway, even if the plane hadn't crashed on the island. It's really destiny! At times I found the show a little confusing but there are many bonus features on the DVDs that explain these mysteries and more than anything I was totally into the secrets of the island all the way to the very last episode. I was awfully sad when this show ended and I've been watching it repeatedly ever since. The talent throughout this show was impressive, from well-known actors to the completely unknown, all performances were pristine and I'm glad I kept an open mind to discover this show because now it's my favorite.
If you're not watching this show yet, you're missing out!
Breaking Bad (2008)
Breaking Bad
I watched this show after I saw that it was rated a 9.5 on here and I must say that I was not disappointed! Right from the first episode where Walter White (Bryan Cranston) was standing in his underwear pointing a gun at a non-existent enemy all the way to the final showdown that ended this addicting series, there was not a single episode where I wasn't glued to the screen.
The characters were brilliant and complex, and the actors who portrayed them were legendary. Not to mention that the show was very funny at times too! This series had everything from me clawing at my chair in anticipation of what was going to happen next to me cracking up laughing uncontrollably. If you're looking for a roller coaster that will leave you wanting more, this show is for you! For those like me who also want more, they have Better Call Saul now too!
Greetings from the Shore (2007)
Sweet Movie
This is a sweet feel-good movie about a young woman who ends up on the Jersey shore for a summer job after her father passes away so she can save up money to go to college. Kim Shaw does a great job at playing this innocent and fun-loving character and as a huge Paul Sorvino fan, of course his performance was great too! The Russian sailors were both comedic and mysterious and really all of the acting in this indie film was great. It's not a sappy romance story but the story line isn't really anything beyond what you could normally expect but if you like a sweet movie that will leave you with a smile on your face I definitely recommend getting this one! Note that there are F-bombs being thrown around every five minutes by certain characters but it's still a good movie nonetheless.
Immigrant (2013)
A Film That Hits Home
Warning: Contains Spoilers!
I bought this film because I'm a big fan of Paul Sorvino and Andrew Divoff who are both in this movie and their performances didn't disappoint me, but neither did the story line. No, this movie wasn't perfect, like most others I too was annoyed at the arbitrary historical footage in between the scenes but for me that didn't take away from the story.
It's a heartbreaking tale of poverty, shattered dreams, domestic violence and child abuse that needs to be told. No matter how many films we make about this, it's something very real and devastating that is unfortunately too common. This movie really hit home for me because I saw so many traces of my own childhood in there; growing up in a single-parent household in a foreign place with bad guys who came and went. Much like Daanyik's, my cries fell on deaf ears too.
The ending of the movie is really what got me on the edge of my seat. I was literally clawing at my living room chair when Tolik (played by Andrew Divoff) was at Meela's (played by Angela Gots) door threatening to kill both her and little Daanyik and she actually opened it! I swore he was going to kill both of them but in a twist that I really wasn't expecting, it's little Daanyik who ends up stabbing Tolik to death. It was an emotionally intense ending to an emotionally intense film, especially for someone who lived through something similar (minus the murder).
I do hope that future viewers will stop being childish as to the production of this film (who also happened to be based on a true story of the writer's life) and actually look to the story told here and take an important lesson from it.
