Abigail (2024)
I like to play with my food
Having seen the trailer whilst in cinema few months ago I knew I had to see this, now I'm massive horror movie fan and so far this year with the likes of imganary, night swim and first omen we've had a great start to 2024 in the horror movie genre. Now I have to start with the plot. 5 unwitting criminals kidnapped a young balerina of a very wealthy business man in the hope he will part with $50 million but boy are they in for a shock as having to sit the young girl for 24 hours in order to claim the ransom money, little do they know what's in store as abigail is a vampire as is her dad. Now the acting was OK and I know its not a movie that will win awards but it does deliver some good scenes and some of the from Melissa barrera and Kathryn Newton is OK and has a few surprises. The setting in a mansion where they get imprisoned so that abigail can feed is also really good.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Unusually good
Where to start with this movie, the acting from David dalmastchian is top drawer and for me he makes the movie, it has a uniqueness about it. The way the movie is very much just like watching a chat show on television and how it goes for the interval and we see backstage is freaking cool. I think the ending was very strange and as I said earlier unique to say the least. Dalmastchian does a grand job and hope this gets him some more unusual horror flicks. I always liked the way on the big screen it was just like an old 70's TV screen. I would like to rate the movie higher but the movie for me was too short.
Sound of Freedom (2023)
Breathtakingly sad
Just came out of watching this movie and I knew what this was about before sitting down to watch it. As some may know it is about the trafficking of children around the world some as young as 3/4 years old which as a father myself is heartbreaking to think that these vile people have the audacity to take someone's child from them and then make money. Now about the acting and all the other stuff that comes with a movie. Tim ballard was played by Jim cavaziel whom I've always thought was a very good actor but playing this role or any role like this must be hard and he relays a message at the end which should inspire most if not all of you movie goers to go see this movie. The way the movie goes into the seedy underworld of these tragic events makes it worthy of any kind of movie recognition and I know it may not win an Oscar as this isn't the kind of movie that sells out cinema screens and as Jim said at the end this movie was made 5 years ago and there was obstacles put in the way of it getting to the big screen. It's hard to watch at times but it's important to watch it so it opens up our eyes to what atrocities are happening to GODS CHILDREN and as Jim said in the movie GODS CHILDREN ARE NOT FOR SALE!
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Wasn't expecting that
Well watching this film I was totally surprised with the twist. The movie starts off with Alice (Florence pugh) & Jack (Harry styles) as a married couple living in the 1950's where Jack is the working man of the house and Alice is the stay at home wife who cleans, cooks, shops and has afternoon drinks with her close friend. All the while this is all some sort of life lived through the mind as we eventually see Alice and Jack in the present day were Alice is a nurse and Jack is unemployed. Alice starts to remember her real life and Frank who runs the show in their make belief life is determined for her not to get to truth but she eventually remembers and finds a way back to her real life. The movie is well worth a watch and the acting from push, styles and chris pine make the movie worth watching. Wasn't a big fan of Harry styles in movies but he did well in this and think he could get some more roles in movies where there is more of a script and story line where he can show his acting abilities. The costumes and scenery are also very well done.
Fast X (2023)
More to come
Now as a fan of this franchise since I seen the 1st movie on VHS yeah that's right VHS. I think the 10th installment of this wonderful franchise is one I'd the best so far and up there with the very first movie. Now cast your mind back to the movie fast 5 where the crew hijack the bank vault from hernan reyes and in the car chase dies leading to the son dante hunting down torreto and his family to make him suffer. Brilliant action scenes as we always expect from these movies. We were left with this movie not knowing what happens to dom and his son Brian. So now the wait is for fast 11 which by all accounts will be ready for 2025 so all you fast & furious fans like me will have to wait a fare bit of time to see what happens from the cliffhanger. Will dom and little b be OK and what about hobbs.
The Whale (2022)
Truly heartwarming from Mr Fraser
This movie will tug at the heartstrings of most people who watch this. I could feel my emotion building up all the way through the movie until the scene when Charlie (Brendan Fraser) let all his emotion flow and the acting in that scene was absolutely top class. Now I remember when brendan sort of burst onto the scene in the movie california man and to say this movie has now shown us how good an actor he actually is. Now the movie is about a man who teaches classes online that left his wife and kid (Sadie sink) for one of his male members of one of his classes which wasn't done online. He fell for his pupil and left his family but his partner commits suicide leaving Charlie behind who Now wants to reconnect with his Now 16 year old daughter as he has grown obese with his loss and is dying. So the story takes through the last week of his life and him trying to connect with his daughter as he knows he was in love with his partner but also feels he had let his family at the time down. I felt so so emotional during the movie as you could see how much of a decent human being Charlie was and the regrets he has in life catch up with him at the end. Potential movie of 2023 and fraser is well deserved for his Oscar nomination for best performance from a male lead in a movie. He will be up there with some of the best performances so far for that nomination.
Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Amazing soundtrack not so good acting.
So the title of this movie tells you what you need to know to begin with, this is the bio-pic of the late singer Whitney houston and let me tell you movie goers this is a very good movie and I never really go for these types of movies but this one had me gripped all the way through and the music on the film was outstanding and something Whitney herself would be very proud of. Now the acting isn't the best and sometimes through the movie I was wishing that there was some big names playing some of the supporting cast, apart from great actor Stanley tucci who was immense as legendary record producer clive Davis. Naomi ackie briefly sings very little songs and what you hear is whitney's vocals adapted for cinema and we know how good her voice was hence why she was called 'the voice' in the music industry. Something I didn't know is that whitney had a female lover early in her career which was a surprise to me. The movie is up there with the bio-pic for tina turner (what's love got to do with it) starring Angela basset and Lawrence Fishbourne but not with the same level of acting. This movie is well worth a watch at the cinema.
She Said (2022)
The truth will be told
In this true story of two investigative journalists from the new york times bring to light decades of sexual/harassment in the world of showbiz in Hollywood and they gave a voice to those who couldn't stand up and fight the system that allowed movie mogul Harvey weinstein to sexually harass and even rape young woman as they started out in their lives to make careers for themselves but their worlds were shattered by what he done to them. The two journalists are called jodi kantor and Megan twohey and their tireless work helped bring weinstein to justice. Watching this film I was filled with emotion not only for the woman he had raped/harassed but for the two woman whose lives for a long time were consumed by getting justice for woman who were involved with weinstein and the woman who came out after the piece in the times was published. I believe that putting a movie out that is based on this kind of events is a tough one as the actors and actresses portray some tough roles and I could feel this in their acting and the emotion was very much a big part of the movie.
Bones and All (2022)
Great directing
Spoiler alert
If you haven't seen this then don't read any further.
So this my first movie review on insta. I went to see this film on Friday and have to say I think this film with its actors, director, cinematography plus its great soundtrack. The movie won best directo (luca guadagnino) and the award marcello mastroianni award (Taylor russell) at the 2022 Venice film awards. The film is based on the novel of the same name by camille deAngelis about two young boy and girl who have this appetite to eat people but they aren't the only ones and follows maren (Taylor russell) and Lee (Timothy chalamet) on their journey to find marens mom. They encounter another eater by the name of sully played by the fantastic mark rylance. Its a love story with a bloody twist and for me the acting was absolutely superb and can see why there was awards given for this movie. I was glued the the big screen like i haven't been for a while and that says alot. Timothy chalamet again commands his role as well as the lovely Taylor russell and the mixture between the two on the big screen takes me back to romeo and Julie with Leo di caprio and Claire Danes although I rate bones and all as a better movie but it's where I'm coming from with the chemistry.
I give this movie 8.5 out of 10.
Well worth a watch.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
beautiful writing/directing
This movie for me will always and should be in the top 10 movies of all time and not just because of the actors who play the main characters I.e for me one of the greatest actors of my generation in Morgan freeman and an underrated actors in tim Robbins, clancy brown and even William sadler. The film itself is set in the fictional prison from the short story from the legendary writer stephen king called Rita Hepworth and shawshank redemption and good old Rita plays a role in the movie helping Andy dufresne escape the prison. The story is tim Robbins character sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. When he eventually settles into prison life he becomes friends with Morgan freeman's character 'red'. I feel this movie is a mixture of drama/comedy and good will to men. It's a film that will make you feel sad and happy throughout the movie and I believe as much is a credit to the directors but also to Frank darabont who was involved 'the green mile' and one of my favourite tv shows the 'walking dead' along with stephen king. The writing is so good that the movie is a gem and is so close to the viewers hearts. For me from the first time to even now watching this film it has me up and down with emotions and back to what I said is this movie is in my top 10 movies of all time. If you haven't watched this movie then your either not a movie fan or been living in a cave. I give this a rating of 10 of 10.
