The Shape of Water (2017)
The shape of unbridled lust
The cinematography is beautiful, the editing skillful, the acting genuine... The story is utter garbage.
Three friends, which can be classified according to their respective group identities (a gay man, a black woman and a communist doctor), help their mute friend free an animal from a white Christian male who represents oppression, evil, and sadism. The animal is given human-like intelligence to show it has human-like worth as PETA would have us believe of all animals.
The end goal? Utter sexual freedom. Disregard for morality, contempt for rules and for natural law. Everything is fluid and relative, hence the title: the shape of water.
Joker (2019)
Confused critics = good sign
Tragedy either brakes a man or makes a man. But the Joker's Breakdown is more than mere tragedy. At a specific point in the story, it's a conscience choice. It's when he makes that free choice that the viewer no longer feels bad for him. When you change your philosophy to match how you feel (in the case of the Joker, to make morality subjective) you attack what makes human dignity objectively good. An opponent to human dignity is not subject to sympathy. The Joker is evil.
This is a commentary on the "victim mindset" that we see in today's political-correctness. Batman is the contrast. His hardships make him want to spread justice. The joker's hardships make him want to spread more hardships.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
This is for the critics:
The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.
The highest, as the lowest, form of criticism is a mode of autobiography.
Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming. This is a fault.
Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope [...]
No artist is ever morbid. The artist can express everything [...]
It is the spectator, and not life, that art really mirrors.
Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new, complex, and vital.
When critics disagree the artist is in accord with himself.
We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it. The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
All art is quite useless.
Oscar Wilde.
12 and Holding (2005)
surprisingly good drama
An obscure little gem. The characters are intricately realistic, and it feels as if they are popping out of the screen. The acting is surely a result of brilliant directing and very mature talent on the children's part. What makes this movie a success is neither the budget nor the experience of the cast and crew. What makes this movie a success is, almost assuredly, the life experience and passion that was pored into the script and the performances. In a word, it is genuine.
The Black Stallion (1979)
A film that needs to be experienced
One of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. Even now in 2017 it blows me away. To be honest, the first time I saw this movie was when I was a kid, and I liked it, but wasn't crazy about it. It actually got rather boring after seeing it several times. I re-watched it for the first time in several years, and just sat there flabbergasted! First of course, the cinematography. Simply breath-taking. Second, the soundtrack. Mysterious, exciting and exotic. And thirdly the beautiful speechless dialogue between Black and Alec. It feels like an ancient myth of a boy and his horse. A myth like that of Alexander and Bucephalus. This movie is deeply touching, and covers subjects such as friendship and trust, without any dialogue. It reminds the viewer of the fox and the little Prince from the French novel "the little Prince". A film that needs to be experienced.
Arrival (2016)
One of a kind
Very well scripted, and surprisingly human. This movie is about aliens, yet the main focus is Amy Adam's character: her experiences, her choices, her feelings. In the reviews that gave this movie a low rating, I find a reoccurring theme: "the movie is boring". I think this has more to say about the viewer than the movie. Boring as in there isn't a lot of action... Sure. But boring is the last thing I would call this movie. It was fascinating, I was all eyes and all ears. Unique sci-fi movie, one of a kind, not action packed like you might expect, but beautiful movie nonetheless. Love the play on colors and the close focus lens in this movie. Cool concepts too. 9 out of 10
