Chernobyl (2019)
Best show I have seen in many years. Bring the tissues.
This mini series was far far better than I ever expected. I had to remind myself that this is a TV show and not real. It brought tears to my eyes. I was telling the actors what to do. It really drew me in. It was like watching a train wreck. You wanted to look away , but you couldn't. The story line was skillfully written. Every now and then a side plot full of human interest would emerge and be followed. Sometimes I would think "don't go there, you will spoil the show". But every time they proved me wrong. It was near perfection. Please note that this is a fictional account and don't expect every character to have been a real person. They are representative. It is not a documentary. They got the period costumes, hairstyles etc so right. I found myself wanting everybody who is championing nuclear power to watch this mini series. Watching the series made me want to shout at everybody whose answer for everything was to send it to another committee. No wonder the USSR collapsed. I wanted to tear down every statue of Lenin and put up statues of firefighters and coal miners and other faceless workers , who answered to call to help, knowing that their lives would be ruined. This series is a monument to them.
Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017)
Great for those who like courtroom dramas. enjoyable but flawed.
Denzel Washington shows us again why he is one of the finest actors on screen today. The plotline has been given a bit of an overhaul, compared with the movie that was first presented. It needed another edit. The story line concerning the massive legal challenge that Roman had been working on for years, should have been cut out. It added nothing to the story line and I felt it detracted from it. People always are tempted for an heroic ending. They just couldn't resist this clunky finish. Pity. Other than that, I thought it was just fine and will probably watch it again some day.
The Whole Truth (2016)
An even paced show
The week ending is matched by a weak beginning and weak middle bit. Keanu Reeves and Renee (you know who) displayed the emotional range of a cadaver. Forgettable characters and slow paced script made this viewing a waste of time. Don't watch this unless you are tired and want a good sleep.
Lost Treasure Hunters (2014)
Fake terrible show
Another reality show that came across as total fiction. There was a lot of acting in this show and it was all terrible. The season I watched was about some lost diamond mine in India. They are looking for the lost mine for a few weeks before the Monsoon season will hit and close down the operation. Last time I looked there were 12 months in a year. Go figure. There was a manufactured mix of superstition, tension with the locals who were made to look pretty dumb and tension within the team, machines breaking down, oooh , the drama ! I don't believe any of the stuff about the diamond discoveries. Seems to me that when you are looking for a diamond mine, the aim is to have a diamond mine up and running making billions of dollars, not finding a diamond and hitting the road home. We don't want those evil locals stealing our diamond. A terrible show, and a waste of time.
American Odyssey (2015)
Awful waste of time.
Promised a lot and failed to deliver. First problem - too many characters. Second problem - too many sideline stories.Third problem. Clunky, slow paced script, that seemed to miss a meaningful edit. An adventure story, that had way too much Days of our lives, soap quality about it.Big problem- nothing resolved at the end, which is galling, especially as season 2 was canned. (not exactly a big surprise). Another thing that spoiled the series is the casting was not very good. The good guy lawyer looks far too young to have all the experience he was supposed to have. The female star looks too old to be in this sort of military action. The young activist was so bad, that I was fast forwarding his contributions after a while. The computer geek hacker stood out, as the best cast member. The transvestite in an Arab country seemed to be more of a soapbox statement by the writer, than anything else.It was just not believable. The romantic hookups all lacked chemistry. In the story, the writer seemed addicted to plot twists. There were so many that it became predictable and boring. You could have canned over half the scenes and missed nothing. Slow paced story, that promised a lot at the start, but went downhill very quickly. Don't wait for a re-run. It won't happen.
Frequency (2016)
Obvious plot line
These are my opinions. You may not agree with all or any of them. That's fine. There are things I like about this series, but it could have been so much better. The basic premise was good, inter time communications to prevent crime. After the first couple of episodes , the scripts were starting to get a bit weak. The female lead's romantic relationships have zero chemistry. She was, for me,unbelievable as a Police detective. For any series to work, you have to connect with one of the characters. I don't know who that would be here. The Dad is a bit weak and the worst detective that ever lived. The absurd way he dealt with the Nightingale, when he found him in his truck was just plain dumb. No Sherlock Holmes here. But the thing that really spoils the series is the obvious main plot line and where it is leading . It's so clear to see where this series is going that by the 6th episode, I am over it.I could write the rest of the basic plot outline, so I refuse to watch any more episodes. It started out as such an original idea and quickly went into a well worn formula.
