Gyeongseong Keuricheo (2023)
It was going great until the "oh no".
I am new to the k-drama type shows and I am really enjoying them. The production of this show is very well thought and researched. Setting is great, use of antique cars and all! Really cool! Some people might not realize that they had to teach the actors how to drive these cars because antique cars are not as straight forward as just knowing how to drive standard shift gear. So that was nice to see too. So there was attention to detail.
The cast is lovely, great actors all. The story was innovative and fresh, added romance classic K style approach too, with some meet cute encounters and all, and with a few fun comedy relief moments here and there. And the historical point of view post war, was also interesting.
I talk about the ending here, but I do not specify anything (but it can be considered a spoiler):
The series was released in two parts. 7 episodes, that were really awesome, and then the 3 last episodes. I think when they lost sight of what they were doing was at the very last bit. They wanted to look too edgy or open up the option to have a second season, which by itself is rare with these type of shows, as they usually limit themselves as type of miniseries. Which has been one of the appeals for me. In any case, in the very last few minutes, after an emotional roller coaster, they tried a different style and then a different path and then another. So the ending was not an ending and it was confusing and kind of weird. And definitely not satisfying at all.
I didn't understand the need for it and it would have been better if the would have simply closed the current arc and call it a day.
Overall I enjoyed the series but the ending was a big let down. I'll let you judge by yourself.
Eight for Silver (2021)
Amazing little movie. Great take on the topic.
I loved it. Original, moody, really well made. Do not let the low rating influence you. This is a little jewel.
I never come to make reviews, but I did because I was so impressed. The visual factor is just stunning and well designed. The pace of the narrative, really well managed. Captivating. It can feel a bit slow at moments but I thought it made sense with the delivery.
The effects and makeup are top notch and I liked that they didn't really abuse it. It all makes sense.
It has a bit of Victorian goth-y feeling to it. I cannot really call it horror, although it does have a bunch of quite horrific and extremely bloody gory graphic parts. I guess if you are looking for true horror, this might not fit the traditional concept of it, and that is ok, because it does have its own style and approach. Recommended if you want to watch something a bit dark and interesting.
Malnazidos (2020)
A fun take on the genre
In a market that has been literally overrun by zombies, this was a fun and really well made little film.
I think it had all the necessary elements for a fun ride and if you are not looking for something super deep or just simple entertainment, then this is the film for you.
Zombies is my favorite genre and there have been recently a couple of series and movies done in historical settings like Kingdom, and I think this one, "Valley of the Dead", was a great effort and worth watching.
I added 10 star review because I think the current 5.8 is quite undeserving.
Also, working during Covid and have such a great result is very commendable in my view.
Worth the watch.
The Last of Us (2023)
I wasn't sure about it but then...
I really wasn't sure about this series. The first few minutes from the first episode were awesome. I did like the overall idea and the core concept is great, the acting is amazing, as well as the effects, but still, wasn't sure! Thinking we all seen this and that before, but to clear out my doubts, then the third episode aired and it has been sincerely, the best episode I have ever watched on a zombie series, ever. In the history of zombie series. Now I need to type some silly stuff because my review couldn't be just that I loved the third episode. Which is really ridiculous and now I'm just trying to use extra words to fill in more space. Lol, I guess.
Anyhoo, now I have great expectations for the rest of the series. It's worth a watch. Enjoy.
Diablero (2018)
Just fun
This is one of those shows that you will either get very into it and it's all quirky interesting subculture or not.
I really don't get the low rating of it to be honest.
It was so original and fun and has a lot of cultural fun references, that for me made it even more special. From the cars, the places people live in and the tiny details too.
I think it's really enjoyable if you go to watch with an open mind, and no expectations.
It is a super natural centered show after all, and I do get that is not the cup of tea for all people but if you are open to it, I am sure it will be an interesting experience. It also shows a lot of landmarks of Mexico City, which is also very nice.
Shining Girls (2022)
Excellent ending.
This is a very solid series. I was so impressed.
*Spoilers ahead*
I really like Moss in this series, unfortunately it seems she is specializing into abused women roles, when l believe she has so much more range. But that's ok, it might just be my personal impression. She is great nevertheless. The setting and story, so well done. Also...Time travel finally done the right way! And a good ending. I hope they don't ruin it with another season.
Please Stand By (2017)
A story about an aspie girl and her special interest.
Being autistic myself I had a high expectation for this film. And they totally nailed it! Its an awesome performance, the idea is brilliant and I like they did not exaggerate her aspie traits. If I would have to complain of one thing, it would be about the scene about the session with the carer about forcing her to look into her eyes for some seconds, because its a type of therapy that is not so accepted by the autistic community and it seeemed a bit sad. I would also would have liked to see her stim a bit more (like humming, rocking, pressing a squishy toy, etc for self regulation) but that is ok, many people on the spectrum do not stim that is so noticeable. For all those who have never known any autistics or ever had communication issues, sensory processing issues and overload it will be a difficult story to contextualize, but it really is a big adventure! And in the end I personally loved it, it was fun and sweet and endearing.
Queer Eye (2018)
A show that needs a lot of work.
I was pretty excited about this show. C'mon, a newer, better version of the original, wow, what is not to like?
But no. You cannot go into 2018 and have the same format and not renew the concept and style and narrative of the show. They should be ashamed. To start with: You cannot go to a persons house in 2018 and bully them, open up their drawers, try all their things, make fun of their items and then pretend is funny. Its not, grow up. It was adorable in the early 2000s but not anymore. The saddest part is when the subject they are supposed to be helping shows to be honestly distressed and trying to play along while these strangers are making fun of him and being all disrespectful of his personal space and history, and then a second later "trying" to make him feel good about himself? Makes no sense. Also, in the 5 subjects they "help" with, they also have to refresh the concepts, like "food and wine"? What about more like "nutrition and wellness"? Why enabling people with really bad nutritional habits instead of helping them be a better version of themselves? What about health as an addition to the grooming concept? Or even including dental care in these areas? as I said, needs a lot of work. I know its supposed to be a quick fix in a short amount of time, but you can do a lot in little time with good advice and resources.
Finally, I am not so sure about the cast, there is some group energy missing there. Finally, I do have to add, but this is just me... what's up with the grooming guy style? that hair! Its so out and dirty! Ew.
There is a lot I could say about the cast, but I will leave it there.
The show in the end is entertaining but it would be awesome if polished for the new generation viewers.
I never make reviews but I am pretty sure my gay friends would be so offended by the stereotypical style of this show.
