Playing by Heart (1998)
Un-enjoyable
The lesson I got from the movie: Love is caring about someone enough not to burden them with EVERY negative thought that crosses your mind; as seen in the movie. In relationships, you need to Play by Heart. But keep your brain involved too.
Some reviewers say the movie was: adorable, cute, sweet. More like irritating, juvenile, typical, pathetic, 90's, 'down with men' C-R-A-P. You can spot a movie made in the 90's. I'm glad the decade is over.
And I'm not biased. I'm even a fan of some of the actors: Jon Stewart, Gillian!(the reason I saw the movie), Sean Connery(this "role" really reduces him). I didn't like any of their roles. And I have no problem with romance, but this movie is pathetic. It's for people into self pity. All these great reviews mirror our pathetic society.
The ending isn't ingenious as someone said - It would have to be your 1st movie to think that. We're simply not told certain things until the end....the interweaving doesn't add to the story...unless I missed something in my uninvolved state.
Growing Pains (1985)
Coming to DVD !!!!! ....to watch and cherish forever
Growing Pains lasted 7 seasons (166 episodes) against the toughest competition in TV history: Cheers, Cosby, Golden Girls, Roseanne
I am very glad that this fun show will join the other shows that have been honored with a DVD. This family was wacky, goofy, smart, smart-mouthed, yet full of heart. The show never gets old.
It's important to buy the DVD($23!) soon after it comes out to send a message to the studio that made the DVD that we like the show a lot; enough to buy a 2nd Season. Because the only thing better than the 1st season is the 2nd(The Goofy Glue Incident, etc).
The characters are meticulously written, and brought to life well by the actors like Seinfeld, Friends and Cheers. They're characters you get to know, like, care about, and never forget. Same goes for a lot of the episodes:
11. "STANDARDIZED TEST" Idaho I.Q. high school test- Quote: "After this, the whole school will know how stupid we are"
4. "CAROL'S ARTICLE" episode that made up a word: "stinkiosity"(I'm laughing right now-20 years later).
16. "THE SEAVERS VS. THE CLEAVERS" with Annette Funicello in a "June Cleaver" parody.
Season 2:
29. DO YOU BELIEVE IN MAGIC? a take on "The Sting". - Ben: "Here's your cut, mom."
41. THE AWFUL TRUTH The Kids are alone in the house, and make a discovery. - One of my favorite eps of all TV.
44. CONFIDENTIALLY YOURS - The Kids are alone at home again - things happen
involving Goofy Glue.
I'll be watching this show for the rest of my life (thanks to the DVD and Warner Brothers). I still remember watching the 1st run of some of these memorable episodes 20 years ago!!....."Who knew?" ;)
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
A HUGE classic everyone should see
This movie is creative, original, and very watchable. I first saw it 25 years ago. I was about 10 years old. I still find myself watching it every time it's on TV. It's not supposed to be realistic(obviously). It's filled with metaphors and meaning. Here's some trivia that can be missed. Repeated viewing reveals that the 3 characters that Dorothy meets are based on 3 people she knows. They are seen earlier in the movie, and are played by the same people. When re-watching, their early dialog becomes more note-worthy.
The music is VERY memorable. And the movie has a very popular catch phrase everyone's heard many times. Also, there was a play on PBS in '95 based on the movie and I loved it. It starred Jewel and Roger Daltry as the Tin man and he ROCKed - literally. It was classic. I like how the audience laughing added to the play. It's out on VHS.
