Mad Max (1979)
I hate to say it, but this was just bad.
I wanted to love this movie so bad, but we have to face the facts. Cult classic or not, and this is nothing on the Mad Max franchise, this is just a bad MOVIE. While Gibson lead the film with a genuinely enjoyable performance, his strength is overshadowed by the film itself. The music is misplaced and create mixed messages in nearly every scene. The transitions are abrupt and strange. The use of foreshadowing is heavy handed to the point of being superfluous (I.E. the sound of crows whenever something bad is going to happen, even when there are no birds in sight). It feels less like an "action thriller" and more like a rambling art student film. They're are some good pieces, again Gibson is perfect for his role and some pieces are truly entertaining, but overall it was messy and scattered.
The Flash: Blocked (2018)
I dunno dude
While I love Cisco's side-story, Nora is a pain. While I understand that this IS her character, I can't say that I like it. Her "watch me, dad" attitude and constant "no dad, it's me, IM the one who sucks" just irks the living daylights out of the episodes. I get that she's the young kid trying to impress like Barry was and it's a parallel for Barry's growth, but... it's annoying. Cisco's lovelife? Priceless. Nora? I could've done with less.
Grease (1978)
Fine film, shoddy sound.
I have no problems with Grease. Sides from the weird message it gave to kids about the good side of changing yourself for the will of others, I mean. The only real problem I have is the sound mixing. The songs all sound weird, like they were recorded in an echo chamber. Not only does it make everything feel wrong, it makes the vocals dirty and hard to understand. If they got cleaned up, I'd probable give this an 8. But that sound just makes it hard to get through.
Universal Soldier (1992)
If Van Damme stole my heart, Lundgren took my Nightmares
Universal Soldier was my first Van Damme feature film, and i am SO glad I started with it. On whole the message is straight forward, carpe diem, value the life you have, all that good stuff. But its presentation is pretty damn slick, through wild action, a fresh take on a science fiction wartime, and padded along with some decent comedy. The leading men as well bring to the film wonderfully acted parts; with perfect faces (and attractiveness) from Van Damme and a wild, creepy-in-its-maniacism energy from Lundgren. Not too bloody, not too campy, not too basic a plot line, Universal Soldier holds up pretty well against the minor plot holes. Fun, adrenaline filled, roided out action with the edge of the early 90s and the explosiveness of the 80s.
Orgazmo (1997)
This is a BAD movie, but I'll be dammed if it isn't hilarious.
Critically speaking, this is a really bad movie. But the amount of crazy comedy that fills every second of it makes it a brilliant time. I thoroughly enjoyed it, laughing all the way, and... I dunno man it's really competing, something. Definitely give it a watch.
Red Scorpion (1988)
A soldier's revelations
Honestly, I found myself enjoying this film. It's a pretty straight forward anti-Red flick, but Lundgren and the cast carry a lot of good feeling, and though we all could have guessed the plot from the get-go, it isn't shoved down our throats. The idea of Lundgren's arc from killing machine to righteous savior is a little hakneyed to be sure, but his development to that point is well carried, with some reasonable character developments rather than a forced, unrealistic shift. The only real problem I had is that the ending was really sudden. It changes from an emotional scene directly into a mid-battle shot with no real transitions. If they had taken some more time to show the characters plan together to take down Cuamo, it would have been a much more natural shift.
Tron: Uprising (2012)
My only complaint? Premature cancellation.
This show was brilliant. The plot was well paced and the character should each got their deserved development, the animation and art styles were unique and perfectly Tron, and I can't recall a single shoddily delivered line. It had so SO many cool and interesting things going for it, but it was all kiboshed when Disney pulled the plug. I wish we could have gotten even just a few more episodes, to get some semblance of closure. Ultimately, Tron: Uprising is fantastic show and a must watch for any Tron fan.
The Flash: Enter Flashtime (2018)
Damn...
I love this episode. By giving Allen a problem outside of the normal "villain appears, Barry loses, Barry trains, Team Flash wins" formula, this episode was a refreshing break from the Deveau story. It keeps the viewer eagerly engaged by testing every possible solution that a person can think of and concludes with a solution that doesn't feel too sappy or stupid. Aside from a bland "villain", 'Enter Flashtime' is a wonderful examination of Barry and Team Flash at the end of their ropes.
