The Mandela Effect (2019)
Went in knowing nothing and loved it.
I stumbled on this on amazon Prime and it sounded interesting. I was aware already of what the Mandela Effect is so this got my interest.
It's pretty short at 80 minutes, but it doesn't have filler in there padding it out. It presents it's ideas and narrative well with good pacing that keeps you engaged.
The film relies more on the ideas and the narrative than effects which I know would put some people off a sci fi movie, but I think there were also some great special effects too, particularly in the 3rd act.
It has a similar feel to it as the Shane Carruth movie 'Primer' and would make an excellent double bill along side it. I think fans of the author Blake Crouch would also like this movie.
They're Watching (2016)
Starts boring, ends bonkers
I feel bad only giving this a 6 because ultimately I enjoyed it. The last 30 mins were really good, the last 10 of those were brilliant and had chaotic elements that reminded me a bit of cabin in the woods.
My issue is that the setup for it all, basically the first hour of the movie is pretty slow and not much happens (though I did love the Doina advert). It didn't really hold my attention.
It's worth sticking with. It won't go down as one of my favourite found footage movies, but it's a solid effort.
I was very surprised with how well some of the effects were done, and a special mention should go to the production design. There are some paintings on the wall in the basement that have a 'folk art' style similar to what we see in Ari Aster's Midsommar, which were very effective.
Feed Me (2022)
Don't waste your time or money
I saw Feed Me at the British Horror Film Festival. I knew nothing about it going into it, and if I had known anything I wouldn't have bothered sitting through it.
This movie is terrible. All the characters are complete morons who make the dumbest decisions possible. The cannibal character throws up so many red flags I don't know how he hasn't already been caught or why anyone talks to him for more than 5 seconds before backing away politely. How is anyone fooled by his awful wig and accent is beyond me.
The acting is terrible, the script is terrible, the 'plot' is terrible.
I should have left before the end of this film, but I didn't for two reasons. 1 - Maybe it could have redeemed itself with some great ideas or a twist - but it didn't, and without seeing the whole thing, can you complain about it? 2 - If you walk out of a horror movie at a film festival everyone just assumes that you are offended by the gore. I happily watch extreme cinema, I'm fine with gore, so I'm not giving them the satisfaction of saying 'people walked out because they couldn't handle it' when in reality it's because its a pile of steaming garbage.
Why 3 stars and not 1? The practical effects were good. The gore when bodies are dismembered was done well. Lots of blood, some grisly flesh, that was pretty effective. But it doesn't make up for the rest of this crap.
I'd rather sacrifice a limb to a cannibal than have to watch this rubbish again.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Really bad
I was a teenager in the 90s and this is nothing like what it was really like. The clothes are wrong, the hair is wrong, the way they speak is wrong. One kid says 'that's what she said' which no one ever seemed to say until about 2010!
Compare that to stranger things which is just like how I remember the 80s. This film really missss the mark.
I don't know the source material so I can't compare to that but as a movie it's really bad. Poor writing, two dimensional characters, and a sluggish plot.
It gets 2 stars for the soundtrack having some amazing music on it. Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, and White Zombie are incredible. Right, I'm off to listen to The Downward Spiral and Astro Creep 2000 while I attempt to erase this movie from my brain.
