Foe (2023)
Incredibly boring
I rated this movie poorly which probably wasn't fair because I never watched it all. I watched about 15 minutes and then skimmed through and watched a sketch here and there.
Then I came here to read a review to find out what actually happened. It was a good decision. The movie was nonsense. Irrelevant, inconsequential, nobody cares type of movie. It will have no lasting bearing on anyone's life other than a couple of hours wasted.
Robots replace people and the people find they prefer ther robots. That's about the gist of it. The actual time of replacement is kept under wraps so as to add a little twist that again, nobody cares about. That's it.
Road House (2024)
Car crash
I hung on to see how bad it could possibly be and it became much worse than I ever expected.
McGregor gave one of the worst performances I've ever seen. He was an utter joke. Looks like he was given free reign to be whatever he himself thought crazy psycho should look like. He could not have been directed by anyone other than his own juvenile ego. You will never see him act again. He was so bad that it just has to be seen to be believed.
Some of the fight scenes were ok. But overall, this was an effort to take all the cringe from the original and multiply it by whatever you like. It has no redeeming features other than a portrayal of absolutely how not to make a movie.
Meet Joe Black (1998)
Magical
In 1998 when this movie was released I loved it. I watched again at least once since then.
But now, I stick it in on 2024, 25 years of living later, and can't believe that it would evoke such poignancy. It reminded me of all I have loved and lost all I have loved and gained. It made me reflect like no other movie ever, every beautiful minute of it. It made me sob and laugh. It touched nerves that I had forgotten existed.
Every scene, every word, every expression was perfectly placed. It paced to perfection. An appropriately long goodbye, because goodbyes deserve to be long. Loose ends tied up, everything falling into place.
'these things have a way of working out'
Anthony Hopkins as always was incredible. Only Brad Pitt could have carried Joe Black so well. Claire Forlani was well placed too, even if she was a touch over calculated. The script was outstanding. I loved it all.
All of Us Strangers (2023)
What Were People Watching?
After hearing an extremely positive radio review, and reading multiple 10/10 reviews on here about this movie, I decided to give it a go.
I just don't get what everyone is on about. Such a load of utter tosh I have just about never seen before!!! After 45 minutes I was tempted to switch off because I was completely bored. I decided to stick with it in reverence to those reviews. Because how can you judge something you haven't completed.
I was once warned by an English tutor to never ever write an essay based around the premise of waking up from a dream. The dreaded ultimate cliche. I lost count of how many times this guy woke up.
What a waste of my time!
I just can't fathom how anyone found this in any way I interesting, entertaining or emotional. For me it was complete torture and nonsensical BS in capitals.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Interesting
There are movies that I wasted my time persevering with to the end. Not many. But some. This is not one of them.
Contrary to what many of the reviews say, I thought this movie was riveting. When a movie throws out a scary premise for consideration, and especially one as plausible as what is inferred here, you may sit up and take notice. The whole movie made perfect frightening sense.
The ending, which seems to have irked many, is for me also perfect. Because I just don't know where people expected this movie to end up if not there.
In a world of ever more instant gratification, maybe people need everything to be wrapped up and handed to them, including movie endings. If you are pissed with this movie, and it's apparent lack of pace or explanation or ending, maybe stick to watching friends 😉
Liebes Kind (2023)
Worth a watch
I found some of the reviews unhelpful. I read them while working my way through the early episodes and I have to say that while some say the ending was disappointing or rushed, I don't agree. Reading the reviews nearly put me off continuing with the series.
I actually enjoyed the ending and felt that everything tied in pretty well. I also liked the fact that there was much more depth to the plot than I expected. There were some holes but overall it was a pretty decent watch. I lack patience with these types of shows and often fail to finish them but I didn't regret hanging on for the end of this one.
Unthinkable (2010)
Disappointing
I couldn't buy it. Contrary to what some have said I thought the acting was average.
Samuel L Jackson was particularly unconvincing for me, given that he is normally exceptional.
The plot was interesting to a point but if the focus was to be a moral question relating to rights and wrongs of torture and terrorism and all that goes with it then I'm not interested. It taught me nothing and took me nowhere I haven't already been. If there is a deep reveal then then I either missed it or didn't value it.
Right through the movie I was willing to overlook the cardboard acting in the hope that there would be a gotcha moment worth waiting for. Overall, it was a waste of my time and much ado about nothing.
Interstellar (2014)
Nonsense
I really dislike this genre of movie. I sat through it on reading the excellent reviews and on personal recommendation, but I just don't get these types of movies. I couldn't wait for it to be over.
I don't consider myself slow but I spent half of it trying to figure what was going on and then what was the point of what might be going on. Crossing the dimensions of space time is an abstract concept to most of us so I feel that you can just make it up as you go along. Who is to question the validity of it?
There are no constraints other than those that are convenient or circumventable. There are no clear rules. In the end it becomes nothing more than gibberish.
Tulsa King (2022)
Great show!
This is the best I've enjoyed for a while. And it doesn't require the usual slow character building 3 or 4 episodes before it gets going. It gets going from the off. No time to be bored.
Stallone is excellent. I thought this show was made for him. His tough guy no nonsense dead pan demeanour is hilarious in parts. Laugh out loud stuff which is rare for me. Love the character. Script is good. Other characters are interesting too but for me it's all about Sly.
I watched the whole series in two nights and will be jumping on the second series at the earliest possible opportunity. I wish there was more TV as easy to watch as this.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Rubbish
Like the concept but the dubbing renders it ridiculous. Needs to be viewed in original language with subtitles. Otherwise it's just a joke. Shows how easy it is to please people nowadays if this is as popular as they say it is.
That was my original review. This is my updated review. Once I resolved to watch it in original language with subtitles I got it. I think around episode 3 it just became compulsive viewing. At that point you realise that this show is going where shows rarely go. The shock factor is real.
In the end it was riveting and I would recommend highly.
Wonder (2017)
Beautiful
Beautifully told, brilliantly acted, lovely uplifting tale. Made me cry more times than any other movie ever I'd say. Liked it so much that I'm gona sit my young family down to all watch it together soon as I get a chance to sit and watch it with them. Wanted to switch it off midway to save it for watching with them but I couldn't do it. So I'll gladly watch it all again. From the perspective of bullying I believe that there's something to be learned from it also, especially for the younger generation.
Walkaway Joe (2020)
Brutal
The pool scenes are choreographed so poorly that even someone who has zero understanding of the game would have to be disappointed. If you are going to make a movie around a particular sport, enthusiasts of that sport will naturally take a look. With that in mind surely you would endeavour to impress that audience somewhat. It fails miserably by falling back on obvious worn out pool cliches. That aside, the acting is terrible. And the movie is irretrievable from there.
The Assistant (2019)
Subtle?
I heard a very positive review of this movie that described it as subtle. It was a not so subtle waste of my time. Absolute bore. Non event.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Pointless
The greatest load of nonsense I've ever tried to watch. And it took me four attempts. Self indulgence on the part of Tarantino for sure wth little regard for entertainment value because nothing happens. For a massive QT fan, I felt betrayed.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
Excellent
A long time since I've seen Sicario the first, but in a time where it seems impossible to find a worthwhile movie, this was very pleasing. The atmosphere throughout was gripping, aided very much by the backing music if one would describe it as that. Similar somewhat to War of the Worlds, the music conveyed this ever impending sense of doom, and most of that was preserved for the bad guys, which is always good. Brolin and Del Torro were excellent as in the first. The best movie I've seen in a long time, which as it happens is exactly what I said about the first. If it became a trilogy I would not complain.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Excellent, Spectacular Tarantino
The best thing I've seen since Django. So yes I am a massive Tarantino fan and this one does not disappoint. I found this slightly more comedic in nature if anything, some really funny stuff in there for those who appreciate the Tarantino quirkiness. It also has the usual dark streaks, and the tension building is impressive. I love the way he can build to a peak of tension and then let it explode as appropriate or not. The unpredictability is his greatest strength for me, so removed from the tired old clichéd patterns of most movies.
I would not hesitate to watch this movie again and again and even share it with willing others, so impressed was I that a communal viewing would be warranted. This is Tarantino at his best.
Arrival (2016)
A Waste Of Time
This movie was recommended to me as one to watch and I couldn't have been more disappointed. I was just bored. And when it was over I was annoyed that I had persevered with it though I really knew at about half way that it wasn't going to amount to much. I will never understand why people rate films highly based solely on a twist at the end, when there is little or no tension, little or no atmosphere building throughout.I think people value a twist too highly.
This movie also exhibits one of my other great hates. It lacks accountability in that it's just make it up as you go along. Things don't tie together properly and even where they do, so what!!! Lots of stuff is unexplained like how they manage to decipher the language. The aliens are stereotypical squid like blobs which also drives me nuts. The music is lauded as atmospheric but it's nothing original. Think of War Of The Worlds.
My over riding thought when it was over was, it had nothing to do with aliens and all to do with communication. What was the point of the aliens??? They may as well have left them out. And the space pods/ships were just ridiculous.
A silly ridiculous boring movie!
